I did the same thing I always do: I engaged some local youths to ask them about their schooling and what they plan to do with their lives. I've been heavily involved with one young black youth that lives in my complex and is the son of a single mother. He's entering highschool and I've noticed he's been falling into the wrong crowd (gangbangers). When I fly my R/C helicopter at the park, he likes to come out and watch me crash it. I use the time to encourage him to be an example, not a statistic. If he keeps his nose clean and keeps his grades up, I can help him get a summer 'internship' with my company which could potentially lead to a career. It's only one kid, but hopefully, one less kid anyone will be seeing on a wanted poster. If he matures as he should, then we can get into the gun thing.
