Was listening in on a conversation at a local shop recently. It prompted the following list. How do you pronounce these?

Leupold
Hoppes
Garand
Sako
Sig Sauer
Swarovski
Oehler
Glaser

Ogive
Meplat
Sabot

Lew Pold
Hops
Guh rand
Sayko
Sig Sour
Swar of ski
O ler
Glay ser
Ah give
Me Plat (short a)
Say bow

Not to say that any of these are correct. Just the way I pronounc them.

According to SAKO, it is pronounce "socko". A rep for the company said (para-phrased)" Seiko (Say-ko)is a watch,we make rifles"

To clarify what RR said:
guh RAND

Also, according to Webster, sabot is pronounced:
SAB bow (with a short "a").

However, I have heard it pronounced
SAB-bow
SAY-bow and
SAB-it,
and everyone knew what was being referred to. I think all are acceptable pronounciations.

Same with "Hops" and "Hoppys".

How about "Carbine"

Sooooo many people say CAR-BEEN...

Edit: and because I was curious, dictionary.com says both pronunciations: Car-been and Car-bahyn are acceptable. Still grates on me though ;)

Leupold => Loo' pold
Hoppes => Hop' pees
Garand => Gar' end
Sako => Say' koh
Sig Sauer => Sig Sour
Swarovski => Swa roff' ski
Oehler => Oh' ler
Glaser => Glay' zer

Ogive => => Oh' jive
Meplat => Mee' platt
Sabot => Say' boh

Leupold = Loo pulled
Hoppes = Hop eez
Garand = Guh rand
Sako = Say koh
Sig Sauer = Sig sour
Swarovski = Svar ahhv skee
Oehler = Oh ler
Glaser = Glay zer

Ogive = Oh jive
Meplat = Meh plat
Sabot = Say bow

Not to thread jack but what about....

Heckler & Koch

I've heard:

Heckler (easy part) and 1) Kotch, 2) Cook, 3) C0ck, 4) Coke

Does anyone know for sure. I've thought #3 above

I pronounce them pretty much the way Aguila Blanca has his list. I do believe Sako is pronounced as Soc-ko even though I use say-ko. Hoppes is hop-pees as far as I know.

Heckler & Koch... heck-ler and coke

Kar-bean is my way. Nobody will laugh at you if you say it this way. :)

John C. pronounced his surname "Gair-und", FWIW, with the 'ai' as in "air"

From my admittedly sparse acquaintance with German, I say "Svar-off-sky". I could be wrong, but it would follow their usual forms.

Most folks around here pronounce "Hoppe's" as "Hoppies", but then again we call "Versailles" "Vur-sails", so there you go.

I've always heard the terms "Ogive" as "Oh-jive" and "Sabot" as "Sah-bot".

Loo-pold
Hops
Gair-und
Say-koe
Sig Sour
Swar-ahv-ski
Oh-ler
Glay-zier (rhymes with glacier only with a "z")

Oh-jive
Mep-lat
Say-bow (bow as in bow and arrow)

According to their wesite it is Heckler & COKE

No, according to their prices it's Heckler & COKE, because that's what their on.

If they're holding any of them, or anything they're mounted to, or used on...I would say it's a potatoh, potahto type thing ;)

Koch is pronounced with the german guttural 'gh' sound where I come from. There's no analogue in english. Sounds like grating your own throat with a lamppost.

Sig Sauer is Zeeg Za-oo-er you have to say all letters in German. S in the beginning of the word is Z.

Heckler und Koch: the Heckler is normal, the Koch is Ko-HHH with hard H.

Pfft, if you've ever taken a German class Sig Sauer and Heckler and Koch would be no problem :neener:

Leupold: Lou-pold
Hoppes: Hops
Garand: I'm still stuck calling this ga-RAND, but I learned a while ago that was incorrect and should be pronounced more like GAIR-und
Sig Sauer: Sig Sour
Swarovski: Pretty much phonetically as it's written
Glaser: Glazer

Does anyone know for sure. I've thought #3 above
I believe (from the little German I know) that it would be closest to Coke.

Heckler (like an obnoxious guy in the audience) Und Koch (sounds like clearing your throat of nasty mucus)

Not me personally, but the way I have hear them said in a gunstore.
Carbine- car buyin'
Leupold-Loophole
Garand- Gar and
Sako-Say ko
Swarofski- Swear-off-ski
