+1. hahahaha Was going to volley the same thing. Beat me to it.

It's "la poo ah" here in Texas. From what I can gather that ain't proper Finnish, but, then, that doesn't much matter. It's "la poo ah" down here.

Remember a particularly hot thread about this couple years back. Ironically two Fins got sideways with each other over whether it was "lop wah" or "lop-something else."

Can't express most of those in English. Either you're gonna have to learn German/Swedish or I have to learn some kind of phonetic language. :)

I believe if you call Leupold that they answer the phone, Lee-oh-pold.

And ogive as Oh-give, never thought of calling it oh-jive.

Here's another one for you. I shoot Super Colibri (those lovely little powder-free .22s)

Colibri (which is Latin for hummingbird).

It's amazing what the fellows at the range do to that word.

Just three little vowels to pronounce. Lots easier than German.

You could pronounce it correctly, as loo-poled. But that just sounds stupid. I say lee-uh-poled, because it doesn't sound idiotic.

I also say Loo-ee-vil, Kentucky, not loo-uh-vul. Same thought process.

So sue me. :neener:

How about some others...

BAR
FAL
cetme
wasr

BAR = B A R
FAL = F A L
CETME = i don't even bother... too many letters so it sounds goofy to say them and then it comes down to how do i pronounce it as a word?
WASR = Kalashnikopy

Years ago (late 80s) Leupold had in their catalog, "It's pronounced Loo-Pold". And more recently on their web site, but I can't find it now.

What got all this started was: "Last week I was shooting through my buddy's 'oiler' chronograph.... " :rolleyes:

Leupold = lew polled
Hoppes like a bunny does, it hoppes
Garand = gu-rand
Sako = say ko
Sig Sauer = siig sour
Swarovski = I avoid this one
Oehler = what hte heck is that?
Glaser = like laser, like you find in science fiction, but with a gl

Ogive = I say Oh-give at least in my head when I read it
Meplat = I am always inclined to think Mel-plat but I think it is me-plat

What about Bill Jordan?

When he says it is Bill JeerDen but it is spelled Jordan? Kind of funny when a guy can't say his name right.

EDIT: I remember seeing his show a long time ago and it was Bill Jordan. When did he change his own name?

I'm inclined to say "LAY-uh-pohld." But that's me.

HOP-peez : that's what I've always heard.

John C. GAIR-und invented the Guh-RAND rifle. Ain't it grand?

My M28/30 has a SOCK-oh barrel. Is it a "MOH-zin" or a "MOY-sin"?
"Nuh-GANT" or "Nuh-GAWWW(N)"?

A wooden shoe is a "sah-BOH". A "shoe" for a projectile is called a "SAY-boh".

I'd love a ZIG-ZOW-er Pistole, aber sie ist zu teuer!

Now what about that Austrian bullpup? Is it an "A. U. G." or an "AWWWWG", like the guy up at White Marsh Arms calls it?

And what is that cartridge used in the Garand? Ok, M2, but not "30- aught-six". Check the dictionary: "aught" means "something". Surely it's "30-NAUGHT-six." The "N" got lost when people slurred "nineteen-NAUGHT-six". (Sort of like "Mine Nuncle" became "My Uncle" back in Chaucer's day. Latin "Nunculus" , compare "avuncular".)

And what is the name of that RIVER? The one that starts in central Colorado and flows southeast to the Mississippi? The one that has a state named after it... no TWO states! How do you pronounce "Arkansas" as in "Arkansas City, Kansas".

etc. (by the way, that's "et KET-er-a")

(OMG, Threeband got out! Damn, he's got a dictionary...What damn fool got him started?...)

Think you all have it pretty well sorted, except Ken's name is probably pronounced a - ler long a, being it appears to be German and he lives in Texas. We have some colloquilisms that aren't readily apparent to those who didn't grow up here. Llano is pronounced Lan oh. Hoerster is pronounced Her stir, Oestrech is A strike. Behrens is Burns. and Bexar is bear. Tow is pronounced tao. The rest of you just have to live with it. ;)
