I don't feel comfortable unless I have at least 10 magazines for every auto-pistol I own. Keep about 20 or so for the SIG P-226s and 228s/229s -- pistols I have at least two of each ... Probably got about 50 or so 1911 mags (but I've been collecting them for years).

Usually whatever it comes with when I buy it. I have a few extras for my CZ guns just because I wanted some extra carry mags. When I'm at the range, I load, shoot, load, shoot, etc.

I like a minimum of 5 for any carry gun. 1 loaded in the gun, 2 loaded for the pocket or mag carrier, and then two empty for range practice.

Really depends on the gun.

Most of my frequently used guns (either competition or something I just like to shoot at the range) anywhere from 4 to 8.

Seldom used guns typically whatever they came with, so 1 to 3 averaging around 2. I figure the really rarely used ones I may loose the mags anyways, so about the only one I'm guaranteed to keep up with is the one stored with the gun itself :).

At a minimum I like to have six magazines per handgun.
My carry guns are an M&P 9 and 9C, I have 6 magazines each for them. Since both guns will operate with the FS magazines any spares I buy going forward will be the FS magazines.

I prefer at least 3 for any gun I own

My ideal number is 5 if i can have a variety of capacity.

It is amazing how much more productive a range trip can be if you show up with all your mags loaded and ready to go.

That's for pistols anyways

Bare minimum I keep around is 2, and that is typically for pocket guns. I never like only having one magazine for a handgun because it makes it more difficult to narrow down certain types of malfunctions. Handguns that I know, trust, and plan on keeping around will start getting invested in. More magazines, better sights, upgraded grips etc.

For myself when going to the range having a round capacity ~50 makes it easy. between 3-5 mags for those paper punching scenarios. 2-3 loaded mags at home for the SD gun. 2-3 new spares on hand for wear. Average 10.

Indoor range air quality is speculative so the desire to limit sucking all that lead vapor, etc is in mind. I used to pre-load them so that I could get in-out quickly. The UpLULA mag loader has greatly streamlined range sessions now. :)

MY .22 pistol only 2, the others more 3-4 for some, about 10 for 1911 .45s
More is better, every now and then I add a couple if I see a good sale.

I say six is plenty, but it depends on what pistols we are talking here.

Single stacks meant for concealed carry-no need to have more than three. 3 mags for CC is the max I would carry at any given time. If i need more than 3 mags worth, I have bigger problems than I can try to anticipate for every day. On top of that, some of those little 6 or 7 round mags can cost nearly twice as much as a full size handgun mag!

It's a pistol, I don't see the need to go crazy on mags; I think six mags is just fine. One in the gun, two or three in a mag holder, maybe an extra in the car, and a spare at home in case one starts developing issues.

I figure in the apocalypse, a pistol is the last gun I want defending me and if you have a popular make/model, there will be enough extras laying around.

I'm mostly a revolver guy, so I don't worry too much about pistol magazines :D

EDIT: I should also add that for guns like Glock that have standard cap mags and extended ones lik the 33 round 9mm and 22 round .40's, I think it's reasonable to have say, 4 of those ON TOP of the six flush fitting mags.

While my only two semi-auto platforms are 1911 & Glock 19, I have about 7 spares for each "style". That doesn't include the 1 mag that lives in each gun. Counting those it's 9 Glock mags and 12 .45ACP single stack mags.

IMHO, you guys that have 50+ mags of ANY variety, I just don't get it. SERIOUSLY!?! What do you plan on accomplishing with all those spares? Where these bought in speculation that gov't was going to ban them (a valid reason)? Or do you only reload them twice a year? What gives???

IIRC the price has just about bottomed out on STANAG compliant AR mags... that's why I now have 4 magpuls instead of 1 :D

I will never have a gun with less than two. My XDs are my zombie pistols, and I have 3-4 mags for each. If I think I'll need more than that it's rifle time.

For the rifles, about 7-10 each.

Just to throw this out there based on my personal experience

None of us in Colorado thought the magazine capacity restrictions would pass.....

Until they did.

None of us thought Hickenlooper would get reelected.....

Until he did.

And none of us think they'll ever actually enforce that law

Until they do.

I have 2 guns that are affected by that law and any chance I get to pick up a standard capacity magazine for them I do period.

I still remember the 94' AWB, and try to have 5 per handgun and 10-12 per rifle. I also tend to rummage through boxes of random mags at pawn shops, gunshows, etc... as I come across them looking for a good deal on quality mags mixed in with junk.

I even buy mags when I come across a good deal on them, for guns I plan on purchasing.

"I'm mostly a revolver guy, so I don't worry too much about pistol magazines "

if your a revolver guy......why have an opinion about how many magazines others carry?

You do realize that hi-cap magazines can be sold in Colorado as "parts kits". Its just a disassembled magazine.

I bought a Walther 9mm PPX and the dealer did exactly that, took the mags apart and said "here you go".

Its nice little loophole in a peice of moronic legislation.

My LGS just sells the magazine, like I said none of us think they'll ever enforce that law until they do.

Mags per gun.

I prefer 5 per handgun. That said I have 6 for my 45ACP M & P, 5 Each for my 40 & 9 M&Ps FS, 2 for my 40C M & P and 3 each for my CZ 82 & my PT111 G 2. If I need/want more for my 40C, I use a mag from my FS 40. I only have a single mag for my 788-7MM08.

I tried buying as much as I could in '94 before the Assault Weapon Ban went into effect, but I was 22 years old and there really wasn't that much disposable income. Managed to do okay in some areas, but not in others (rimfire rifle mags and double stack pistol mags).

Made it through ten years of shooting with practically nothing in some areas. "High Cap" (meaning standard capacity) pistol mags were $110 to $125 a pop through most of it until all that ended in 2004.

I ended up having to buy surplus Orlites and Thermolds in the mid-90's because standard USGI AR mags weren't really available for the most part (there were no such thing as Magpuls or Lancer). Got lucky in '98 with a friend and a family member discharging from the Army and Marines and giving me what pre-ban M-16 mags they left with. They didn't have any need for them. Couldn't get that lucky with BHP and Glock mags though.

They even had this ridiculous tool during the AWB that bent back the feed lips on bent US G.I. AR 15 mags. That thing didn't really work I'm here to tell you.

I had a single Butler Creek mag for my 10/22. Managed to get a second one halfway through the ban for around $50 and felt I got a great deal. Remember the fact that now we know that the ban would eventually end and that we would manage to avoid an even more restrictive AWB II. Back then we didn't have the benefit of hindsight.

Mags are also consumable. They quit working or they get lost, they get stolen at classes or at competitions.

So why ever deal with that again? They're cheap and available now and I'll never be caught unprepared again.

It's also hedging my family's bets against the future, if they ban all semi automatic guns in 15 years (not so ridiculous since they try it every year) then it doesn't really matter for my son and 3 nephews, they'll still end up being able to use all this stuff for years and years into the future. Might not be available at all then or it might be prohibitively expensive.

Maybe for now, but I remember right after Sandy Hook when mag prices went astronomical again overnight.

Who's to say what they'll be next year or in 10 years. At any rate that's my reason for killing it on mags for some pistols and rifles. I imagine for many their reasons are similar.

I also hate loading mags at the range when I could be shooting.
