how Many States Manufacture Guns?

It bothers me that the vast majority of firearm manufacturing companies are located "behind enemy lines", as it were, in states like NY, CT, MA, IL, etc. - where many of their products are next to impossible to acquire. At the very least, it'd be nice to see a major firearms manufacturer relocate to a "free state" like WY, SD, ND, MT, etc.

This drives me up a wall. Why provide employment, taxes, and income to a state that is *actively* trying to put you out of business?

On the other hand, Shooting Industry had a big article on South Dakota last month. . .and how good of a place it is for gun businesses.

There are thousands of mid sized towns all over the south and west (not counting Cali) that would practically *pay* gun manufactures to move to their city. Tax breaks, land, utility benefits. . .and in most of those cases the cost of living is lower and you have a willing workforce with lower salary requirements.

HK is located in VA, but I don't know if they do any manufacturing there.

(Of course, the main site is over in Germany)

Marlin and Mossberg are pretty close to one another in CT. Ruger is incoporated in Southport, but I think most of their manufacturing has moved out of Connecticut. Connecticut Valley Arms isn't in Connecticut, it's somewhere down south.

Connecticut-
  • Colt
  • Stag Arms
  • Marlin
  • Mossberg
  • Ruger (HQ in Southport, mfg. plants in New Hampshire and Arizona)
  • Traditions (not a true manufacturer, but an importer)
  • JLD Enterprises
  • US Patent Firearms Corp.

Savage also has (at least) a mailing address in Suffield.
We had Winchester (USRAC) until a few months ago.

Additionally, we also have OKay Industries who makes AR mags.

There is also Remarcable Arms and Jo-Jo's that have manufacturers licenses and SOTs.

RE: behind enemy lines

AFAIK us subjects of His Royal Highness Rod (the knob) Blagojevich (that's Illinois) are allowed to own any of the non NFA heaters manufactured in the state, we just can't pack any of our fine pistols. Blago, Daley, and Obama (among other less notables) are trying to drive all of the aforementioned companies out of the state by giving us an AWB that would encompass all semi-auto centerfires (much like hr 1022, actually). Naturally the folks in Geneseo and surrounding areas are not very fond of the idea of Springfield, DSA, Armalite, RRA et al leaving town, but it's clearly for the common good, thousands of jobs notwithstanding...

They left Connecticut a while ago and are now in Georgia. The previous owners formed the present Traditions firm, which is an importer in Connecticut.

We also have Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing/ Galazan as well.

Ah Ha, I KNEW this was a trick question.:D

No states manufacture firearms. States don't manufacture anything (except taxes, grief and bureaucracy, perhaps not in that order)

Private companies located in various states manufacture firearms.

Now, since this is the first time I've participated in a THR quiz...is there some kind of a prize?

I'm with you Dave. The question should have read, "Which states are home to firearm manufacturers?"

I know the gun snobs don't care but Phoenix Arms is in Californica and Jimenez Arms was located somewhere in Nevada (Carson City, Henderson?).

Tactical Customs

Tactical Customs, LLC makes an AR15 here in Carson City.

They make their own, fully machined, lower receiver.

Naturally, they build a full rifle on it as well.

Colt and Smith & Wesson are in CT

Smith and Wesson is in Springfield MA
Savage/Stevens is in Westfield MA
AutoOrdinance factory is in Worcester MA
yankee hill machine is in Florence MA
man, i used to have a list of past and present companys. its VERY exstensive.

but lets not forget

THE US ARMORY AT SPRINGFIELD is the trump card. compare all others to that and be humbled.even if it is shut down. and just think S&W is right down the road.

Well, that's where they've been for a long time, since before the political climate changed in regard to guns. Picking up and relocating is an expensive proposition, although it could be made more attractive with tax breaks, etc. I live in the Northeast, and I personally would hate to see them go, because it would mean that the battle has truly been lost. You may say it has already, but that would be the final nail in the coffin.

Troy Industries, Lee MA

S&W: rimfire and Walther pistols, Houlton ME

Kahr Arms: HQ is in Blauvelt NY, while production is in Worcester, MA.

Auto Ordnance is the same as Kahr.

Another reason many large gun manufactures are located in the Northeast is because of a need for a highly skilled work force. Your not going to find the same cailber of trained machinest in many parts of the country. Plus they are near major transportation hubs and ports which make it cheaper to ship goods.
