How to stop a big animal (bear or moose)?

1. Shoot tweaker mugger.

2. Run.

You don't have to outrun the bear, just the tweaker mugger.
*smile*

Don't look at me like that...
That cartoon dawg said "take a bite out of crime", blame him - not me.

*grin*

If you want it dead rite now! Man or beast, head shot! Yea i know the bullet can glance off of the skull, but it can glance off alot of bones

I'm not trying to create another "is .357 enough to stop a bear" thread, I'm asking what you do when you're out in the woods with whatever gun you have and said bear or moose charges. I say bear or moose because here in North Idaho grizzly, moose, and tweaker-muggers are the most dangerous things you'll find outdoors. I learned how to stop tweaker-muggers at Front Sight, now how do I stop a bear or moose?
According to the Obama administration, things will never get better unless YOU'RE willing to take the first step.

In this case, when you see the animal charging, SMILE, put your gun DOWN on the ground, raise your HANDS to show that you're not armed and BACK AWAY from your weapon. When the animal sees that you are taking the first step and are not a threat to it, then it will stop and in a few seconds you'll be hugging (I guarantee it)...really!

This is called UNILATERAL DISARMAMENT and it's designed to end violence. Even if you are killed, the animal will likely remember your gesture of good will and will spare the next fellow.

So when you see the bear, the moose, the lion—just say, "Yes, we can!" It may be the LAST thing you say, but it will be the first step in an ongoing process.

.

You also need to apologise to it for other humans.

I heard that on top of the skull there is a mound of fat. If you shoot that, it won't stop them.

For bears, don't aim between the eyes, aim for the mouth. Shooting for the eyes will put the bullet at the thickest part of the skull, where the angle is just right for deflection. Putting the bullet at the mouth will get the bullet into the brain. Even a .357 mag 158gr JSP or JHP should have enough penetration to do the job.

I've also heard that pepper spray—the stuff that comes out as a mucky gel—works well. The pepper spray tends to work better when the bear is approaching cautiously or raises up on their back legs. If they're charging you, it's another story.

Hold up a picture of this sow and it's all over,

Love at first sight :D

The one thing that works for sure from personal experience I can tell you for sure is a FORD F350 at 50mph stop moose and bear alike.

OK -

Now that we have determined the weapon,

How 'bout Concealed Carry for same?

Another Bear thread!

Offer the bear or moose the opportunity to appear on American Idol. That usually stops them.

Krab, leave Nancy Reagan be.

one two punch

With reference to the comments about the bear attacks being fast.

And the advise about 12 gage rounds.

The double barrel gun would seem to be a good choice.

I grew up in South Central Alaska, our camp (bear) gun was a short barrel 870 with extended mag. Like someone said above, just make it rain. Also, screaming like a little girl might help, I'm sure that's what I'd do if I was presented with that situation.

Best bet? Get one of those little clip on bells, or many of them. From what I've heard, bear spray just adds a little flavor to your behind.

How to stop a big animal (bear or moose)?

I don't know about the moose but for the bear do the following.

Drill a hole in the ice. Around the hole lay out a bunch of peas. When the bear goes to take a pea you kick him in the ice hole.

Considering that a bear's skin is relatively thick, I would say a .357 magnum or higher with a heavy, soft point bullet would stand a good chance of being effective. I would be afraid that a hollow point would dump most of its energy on impact and not penetrate effectively. In contrast, a FMJ may not create the temporary cavity necessary to stop the beast.

The thing about a bear is they can bounce up and down a lot when charging you. Just aim for the mouth as best you can - you want to his the brain stem because that's they only place that really stops any animal dead in it's tracks other than snapping the spine but the spine isn't even seen on a charging bear.

You're only hope, really, is dumb luck and the biggest, most powerful, hardcast cartridge you can fire at it. I'd say that once a brown bear decides to charge at you things start to look really bleak really quick. You have a chance with a black bear but a costal brown or even a grizzly is about the most dangerous critter on dry land. You'll be lucky to get off one round and not likely at all to get off two unless you start shooting when they're 50 yards away. And unfortunately our govt. has decided that you have to wait to see if it's a bluff charge before you start shooting. IMO jail is better than the cemetary though. YMMV.

The caveat with my comments is that I have zero actual experience shooting a charging bear of any kind, like most people. I only know what I read or see on tv.

How the heck would the authorities know it was a 'buff charge?'

I'd keep the explanation as simple as:
A bear charged me. He was coming right at me. I thought I was going to die. I shot him. He died instead. Do you have some new pants I can borrow?

Yep, harmon rabb, same thing goes for humans...

1. He came after me, I thought he was going to kill me.
2. I said stop, he didn't.
3. I shot him.
4. I want to talk to my lawyer.

Exactly. And I am a lawyer.

"...it takes a head/neck shot to drop one..." Nope. They're not hard to kill. A shot, using the right bullet, placed in the heart/lung area drops both Yogi and Bullwinkle. No magnum rifles required either.
However, no handgun round is going to stop a charging moose or bear in its tracks. Neither will any rifle cartridge. Physics won't allow it.
If you can manage a spine shot, you might have a chance. Yogi can run at 35 mph when in a hurry. Under 100 yards, you'll never be fast enough. Bullwinkle can weigh up to 1,200 pounds and run through the bush at 25 mph. Even with a 5 foot set of antlers.
