Recently there have been a few threads about whether or not "Rifle X" was/is suitable for deer hunting.

Let's hear from those of you who hunt deer, (or other game), with military pattern weapons.

lots of people do. Mosin nagants are a popular boar gun. SKS's havea widespread use in deer hunting.

AR's exist as a solid varmit platform

Saiga AK's are a good option too

surplus bolt guns have been used for years

I think the issues are whether or not the rifle is accurate enough to insure a humane killing, and whether or not the magazine capacity is compatible with local laws. Lots of folks hunt effectively with AK's, SKS's, mausers, etc.

Forgot to add - my dad has a sporterized Argentine Mauser he uses to keep the yotes away from his cattle. That's a great gun, really accurate.

I use my Inch pattern FAL for deer hunting. I never have enough luck to get any deer, but I give it a valiant effort none the less.

I have hunted white tail deer with a M1 Garand, turkey with a M1 Carbine, and doves with a 1920 M97 trench gun. No problem in Texas as long as soft point ammo is used in the rifles.:D

Oneshooter
Livin in Texas

Of the military rifles I hunt with, I have used a SAKO M39 Mosin as well as a 1942 Izhevsk M91/59.

Those were open-sighted of course. When I need scope work, I have rifles more suited to the task (though I do have a Tula 91/30 PU Sniper).

My AR is generally accepted in Texas for about any hunting.

I'm not sure how my 85-year-old granddad's Arkansas deer camp would react if I pulled out a 6.8 there. I'll have to try next year. I could use it as a chance to educate some good ol boys on RKBA. :)

Over the last couplle of years I have come to hunt almost exclusively with an AR-10 but I have also taken game in the lasy few years with a Garand, Mosin Nagant 91/30 and a Springfield M-21. I have also dropped a pig or two with a 1911 as well.

Kinda of a trick question since just about all our modern rifles are based off military actions. I've never really cared what someone hunted with, just how they behaved in the field. I've been out with five of the rifle types you listed.

M1, K31, Mauser, 91/30, 03-A3, AK, SKS, 1917, FN49, M1 Carbine, and 1873 Trapdoor...taken all of these into the field after deer!

.30-40 KRAG 1899 with Redfield rear sigth is my big game rifle. It's taken down more deer than I've seen. It was my greatgranddads, granddads, dads, now it's all mine!

Love hunting with the military weapons. I use 8x57 mauser both turk, spanish and yugo, M44 and M91-30 mosin nagant, chilean 7x57 mauser, K31,sks and a M4. They have all taken deer and do well if you do your part.:D

I've hunted with military pattern rifles since I was 15 years old.

For mid-sized game (whitetail), I have taken deer with (just including military pattern):

HK-91
FAL
Saiga 308
Vector Arms Polish AK-47

This year, I will be using a LR-308 (stands) and AR-15 using 80 grain (brush).

The only other rifle I've deer hunted with was a Remington 700 in 30-06.
