I would LOVE to hunt with the following rifles one day:

98K Mauser
1903 Springfield
Mosin Nagant 91/30 PU optic
Swiss Mauser
M1A
Lee-Enfield

I'm sure there are others that aren't coming to mind at the moment.

Got my first deer with a 1905 DWM Gew98, and this year I'm taking my Finnish M-27 out.

Those same questions probably came up when percussion caps were introduced, then when levers, then bolts etc. Most hunting rifles used to be military weapons. They're all good, hunt with it,enjoy it.

The only time I went deer hunting, I got one with a Springfield 1903A3. Haven't been since.

I do however have my grandfather's old deer rifle which is a Springfield Model 1899 in .30-40 Krag. He bagged a number of deer with that rifle.

If I had to I would take my 1917 Spanish Mauser in .308 no problem. It was the cheapest surplus rifle in a good caliber I have ever seen I think I paid 110 for it or so.

Killed my first deer with an ole 1903 Springfield. That ole 06 has taken 5 deer and a dozen hogs over the years. (Still have it and don't plan on ever letting it go.)

Killed 1 nice little 4 pointer years ago with an a .303 Enfield mk4 that I traded for. It did a pretty good job also. (I traded it off after my divorce, but regret it pretty frequently!)

Nothing Like My m41/B Swed Sniper

Old Sneaky Pete here: I just had to do it. Went up to Texas to a 26000 acre Free range exotic hunt especially for a curved horn ram with an 8x57 M48A Yugo Mauser( one of those "Military-New" unissued>50 years in storage) with a 2.5x8x36 Leupold Var-II- mildot, a 1922 CarlGustav m96/38 sportorized W/ a Sightron 4X16x42 mildot, and my pride and joy, a gevar "As Issued" 1924 C/G m41/B 6.5x55 Swed Sniper with the Ajack 4x90 (1941 issue)scope. Both the 8x57 mauser and the m96/38 Swed got a nice Boar each and the m41/B did succeed in getting a nice Corsican Ram with a 17-1/2" curl. Had a really big Bar-B-Que with the boar and got the ram skull bare mounted. What else is there?? Maybe cold beer! THANX--SNEAKY

Mauser or 03A3, the closest things to a real hunting rifle on this list. Just drill and tap for a good scope. I'd prefer a new stock, perhaps have to turn the bolt down. Probably need to mod the safety.........Or.....just buy a Remington and get the real thing.

I'm of this thinking too
Most (but not all) are/have:
Bad sights
Bad triggers
Inaccurate
Too Heavy
Awkward Handling

Milsurps are fun and cool, but not right for hunting (FOR ME).

Well, this is my deer rifle of preference when I was living back in ND.

M-25DMRClone.jpg

It has dropped deer out to over 600 yards (665 to be exact according to the Leica 1200) without any trouble. I would put it's accuracy up against any traditional hunting rifle any day. As far as magazine capacity goes, ND no longer has a limit so if you want to carry a box of ammo in the magazine rather than rattling around in your pockets, that's fine and dandy. If you want to use it in other states that do have limits, I still have a 5-round magazine around here somewhere that makes it perfectly legal once again. Really, I don't know what's more fun, making long range shots or ticking off the Fudds that think it's "not sporting"!

I live in grizzly country and since they've been reintroduced in the local area( read forced down the locals throats by out of state tree huggers) I prefer to take my M1A into woods with me just in case.

This one
