I have a hypothetical question and searched but couldn't find anything. Assuming someone were to shoot a gun to the point where it no longer functioned or was unsafe (i.e. the frame cracked on a pistol or some other critical component failed), how would you dispose of it?

Assuming the gun was no longer covered by any warranty.

I'd hold on to it until someone had a gun buy back to get them evil things off the street and I'd turn it in and get me some cash to buy ammo or something.

You could also sell the components. People are always looking for firing pins, magazines, springs, etc.

Yup. Strip it of every good saleable part and (if it were a handgun frame, for instance,) cut it in half with a hacksaw, and toss the halves in the trash. If it were a plastic or aluminum frame, I'd toss them in the firepit.

I agree with rugerman. I've got a horrible little .22 revolver that I was given thats waiting for just such an opportunity. If you really want to get rid of it cut with a chopsaw until you have unusable pieces and then throw it out with your household garbage.

Every now and then the city has a open amnesty gun buy-back. I talked to a LEO working this, he says 99% of the guns turned in are junk.
He also said somebody turn in a WWII Schmeisser which he kept "forgetting" to send to the chop shop.

Well, if it's gonna go kaboom, you could always sell it to some gang banger....:p

I like this idea.

I have a boat I'm going to take a trip on, but I have to warn you, like most boaters on gun forums, I am a little accident prone.

disable it and use it as a decoy, along with some costume jewelry and other crap. in the event of a burglary, it could prevent the offender(s) from spending a lot of time looking for more valuables. once, they've found something they feel is a decent score, they might decide to move on instead of wasting time looking for more stuff.

other than that, buy backs are great, i have a friend who really raked it in on a few of them. he bought a bunch of junk guns a pawn shop was dumping (going out of business), the owner said he could have them for 20bux each if he took the whole lot. he got 40 or 50 each at various buy backs and used the money for decent hardware. silly anti's :D

I like the idea of using old worthless guns as decoys for thieves. Just make sure to disable the gun (remove the firing pin, other key parts). Keep it in a place you know they will look. I would also attach some lock...like a chain and padlock set up... it would slow them down and cause them to waste time.

NO.

They will look further for more guns, or come back later for other guns, or tell their buddies about your guns.

You want to appear to have nothing.

Send it to Numrich gun parts.
That is what I'd do if I got rid of it but if I had a couple of handguns that were no longer repairable(I actually have 2) they are and will stay in my misc. drawer. I will not sell them at a "buy back" ever.

I take it you didn't finish reading the thread. Particularly post #12. ;)

Definition of "going off half-cocked" right there . LMAO!

I would never give any kind of gun to a "amnesty buy back". There's no need to inflate their numbers of successes".

Take the money you get for it and donate to the NRA or GOA. Worthless gun gone, false sense of victory for the anti's, and more ammunition for our ongoing legislative battles. Definitely a win-win situation.
