A little up-front info here. I've been dating a girl for a year and three months now. She would go out with me and a friend of mine and shoot, usually a .22 rifle that belonged to my friend. This happened maybe twice. When she was growing up, though, her father made it clear that to live in his house, she had to know how to work every gun in the house. That was true for her, her little brother, and his wife. They all got keys to the closet they were kept in, just in case they needed them.
He would put her in a rolling chair, set her up with a .22 semi-auto, and let her shoot at cans all day long. She has fond memories of that.
But never in her life had she shot a pistol. She had always been afraid of them. She had fears that they would "pop back" into her face.
Well I finally bugged enough to get her and one of our friends (who's also my room mate this year. Long story.) to an indoor range to teach them how to shoot a pistol. my room mate was genuinly interested in learning. She had shot a .22 rifle once at camp, and thought shooting a .22 pistol would be fun.
My girlfriend just wanted to get it out of the way so I'd stop bugging her.
So I rent a lane for all of us. I brought four pistols. A CZ75 with 9mm and Kadet .22 slide, a CZ97 .45 ACP, and an S&W 686+.
I showed them first how to operate the CZ75 Kadet. Showed them how the slide locked back when it was done, where the slide release was, safety, sight picture, etc. I put the target at 10 feet. My girlfriend didn't want to shoot it first. She thought it'd kick too bad. To show them how little it kicked, I held it with three fingers (both hands, kind of with just two holding the gun place and one pulling the trigger) while I shot the target. I flipped on the safety and set the gun down.
My wonderful asian sister wanted to go first. Girlfriend didn't have any problems with that.
So after 9 rounds of .22, the room-mate turns to me and says "That doesn't kick back at all! Got anymore?" So I handed her another loaded magazine. she worked the gun, a little clumsy at first, but got it working and shot another 10 rounds. Now my girlfriend was getting impatient.
She wanted to shoot it now. Anything you can do I can do better....
So after me promising her about five times that it didn't kick, she took her first ever shot with a pistol.
The grimace of expecting recoil was wonderful. She then looked back at us and said "That didn't kick at all!" she then went through 35 rounds like they were nothing.
I moved them up to the .38 special. Now the room mate loved the revolver. She's a classy girl with old-world tastes, if that makes any sense. Well after shooting up all my .38 special, my girlfriend asks, "What's next?!"
I can see the ravenous look in her eyes....
So I swap out the slides on my CZ for the 9mm. I shoot it once for her, then she takes it and starts making very neat little groupings on the paper.
Did I mention these girls are DAMNED good for their first time out? I wish I was that good when I first started!
So after getting a hold of my 9mm CZ, my girlfriend is in love with it. It's the only one she wants to shoot. She also wants her own pistol. There's a CZ 75, blue finish, in a local shop for $350. I'm heartbroken that I'm putting a rifle together for her right now and don't have the money to get her the pistol, but I'll let her shoot mine all she wants.
In fact, that's what happened today! She asked me if we could go to the range "pretty pretty please?".
So I bring the .22 and the 9mm for her to use. I got some time in with the S&W 625 (boringly accurate at 45 feet, as always). So she goes through 75 rounds of 9mm, 175ish rounds of .22, and 10 rounds of Federal HST.
So when I say she's shooting up all my ammo, I am not complaining. I'm being cocky.

Room mate shooting
Roomie's target at 21 feet! Not too bad! Especially for her first time ever handling a pistol.
Instructing girlfriend...
Girlfriend shooting at 21 feet. Notice the brass in the air.
totally not ready for the picture, but it sure is a pretty target!
Notice how the room mate is looking bubbly and happy, and the girlfriend looks like she just snuck up on a platoon of puppies in their sleep and took them out one by one with a rusty steakknife.
Yep, that's my girl.
Each group on that last one was done with either a 9mm or a .38. Minus the one on the bottom. That was me with the CZ97. They simply picked one part of the paper, shot, then tried to make it into the same hole.
By the way...
Women shoot very well!
