A little up-front info here. I've been dating a girl for a year and three months now. She would go out with me and a friend of mine and shoot, usually a .22 rifle that belonged to my friend. This happened maybe twice. When she was growing up, though, her father made it clear that to live in his house, she had to know how to work every gun in the house. That was true for her, her little brother, and his wife. They all got keys to the closet they were kept in, just in case they needed them.

He would put her in a rolling chair, set her up with a .22 semi-auto, and let her shoot at cans all day long. She has fond memories of that.

But never in her life had she shot a pistol. She had always been afraid of them. She had fears that they would "pop back" into her face.

Well I finally bugged enough to get her and one of our friends (who's also my room mate this year. Long story.) to an indoor range to teach them how to shoot a pistol. my room mate was genuinly interested in learning. She had shot a .22 rifle once at camp, and thought shooting a .22 pistol would be fun.

My girlfriend just wanted to get it out of the way so I'd stop bugging her. :)

So I rent a lane for all of us. I brought four pistols. A CZ75 with 9mm and Kadet .22 slide, a CZ97 .45 ACP, and an S&W 686+.

I showed them first how to operate the CZ75 Kadet. Showed them how the slide locked back when it was done, where the slide release was, safety, sight picture, etc. I put the target at 10 feet. My girlfriend didn't want to shoot it first. She thought it'd kick too bad. To show them how little it kicked, I held it with three fingers (both hands, kind of with just two holding the gun place and one pulling the trigger) while I shot the target. I flipped on the safety and set the gun down.

My wonderful asian sister wanted to go first. Girlfriend didn't have any problems with that.

So after 9 rounds of .22, the room-mate turns to me and says "That doesn't kick back at all! Got anymore?" So I handed her another loaded magazine. she worked the gun, a little clumsy at first, but got it working and shot another 10 rounds. Now my girlfriend was getting impatient.

She wanted to shoot it now. Anything you can do I can do better....

So after me promising her about five times that it didn't kick, she took her first ever shot with a pistol.

The grimace of expecting recoil was wonderful. She then looked back at us and said "That didn't kick at all!" she then went through 35 rounds like they were nothing.

I moved them up to the .38 special. Now the room mate loved the revolver. She's a classy girl with old-world tastes, if that makes any sense. Well after shooting up all my .38 special, my girlfriend asks, "What's next?!"

I can see the ravenous look in her eyes....:uhoh:

So I swap out the slides on my CZ for the 9mm. I shoot it once for her, then she takes it and starts making very neat little groupings on the paper.

Did I mention these girls are DAMNED good for their first time out? I wish I was that good when I first started!

So after getting a hold of my 9mm CZ, my girlfriend is in love with it. It's the only one she wants to shoot. She also wants her own pistol. There's a CZ 75, blue finish, in a local shop for $350. I'm heartbroken that I'm putting a rifle together for her right now and don't have the money to get her the pistol, but I'll let her shoot mine all she wants.

In fact, that's what happened today! She asked me if we could go to the range "pretty pretty please?". :D

So I bring the .22 and the 9mm for her to use. I got some time in with the S&W 625 (boringly accurate at 45 feet, as always). So she goes through 75 rounds of 9mm, 175ish rounds of .22, and 10 rounds of Federal HST.

So when I say she's shooting up all my ammo, I am not complaining. I'm being cocky. :neener:

For you guys who dislike reading and simply want pictures....

Roomie's target at 21 feet! Not too bad! Especially for her first time ever handling a pistol.

totally not ready for the picture, but it sure is a pretty target!

Notice how the room mate is looking bubbly and happy, and the girlfriend looks like she just snuck up on a platoon of puppies in their sleep and took them out one by one with a rusty steakknife.

Yep, that's my girl. :D

Each group on that last one was done with either a 9mm or a .38. Minus the one on the bottom. That was me with the CZ97. They simply picked one part of the paper, shot, then tried to make it into the same hole.

By the way...

Women shoot very well!

Welcome to the club. I taught my wife how to shoot and now I just had to drop $450 on her first handgun. I bought her a 3913LS after 2 years of being bugged about it. This is what you have to look forward to, soon she won't just rip through your ammo she'll start wanting guns that she can call her own.

As they say, be careful what you ask for. As delighted as I am that SWMBO has begun to enjoy shooting and now looks forward to going to the range with me, there are times when I just long for the old days of being able to go shooting solo so I could get some peace and quiet.

WHOOP '97.

Great shots and story. You go girls! Grin.

Congrats to everyone!

Tell the girl friend to buy her own ammunition or 'chip' in for the costs involved in the 'shooting sports'. The first few times are free ones and after that if it is too expensive for you... ask them to contribute.

If you take her out on a date - you might want to discuss dinner and/or ammunition! Ha ha! Maybe she could make dinner for you in lieu of ammunition costs.

Best wishes to the ladies. GREAT story and, yes, women can 'shoot'.

You're a lucky guy, Sir, to find a girl who stays loyal, instead of chasing those types who move on to the next guy who sports the bigger caliber:

Your post was indeed intended as a subtle joke. Wasn't it?

Yeah, I've wandered from the pistol side of the range to the rifle side with my fiancee shooting my Neos to do some shooting with my 10/22 or .22LR AR, and only taking a few handfuls of .22 for myself, figuring to go back and check on her and grab more, and gotten there just as she's emptying the (previously fully) brick before.

My lady will go through as much .223 ammo as I'll let her when we take the ARs to the range. With ammo prices skyrocketing she can be a very expensive date.

We go shooting almost every weekend and last weekend the girlfriend shot 425 rounds of .380, 9mm, and a few mags of .45acp. That L-N-L AP really stays busy.

I had a similiar experience with my 24 year old daughter, after teaching her to shoot we were burning through about 1200 rounds of .45 acp a month . . .allowed me to justify a Dillon 650 with electric casefeed to the wife . . .after all, I was spending quality time with my daughter. (not all bad! :) )

Have a good one,
Dave

Time to introduce them to reloading.

Well, 9mm might be a wash as far as cost, but .38spl can be reloaded a bit cheaper.

Now that she's shooting it, she needs to be supplying some of it. Either go "dutch", as in BYO, or switch off who pays for ammo. If she's willing to put up some money, she's hooked. If she's not, then she's probably just enjoying hanging out with you at the range. When my wife and I were dating I supplied ammo for a while, then her interest cooled a bit. She still shoots and hunts, but not as voraciously as when it was free (for her).

How do you think I feel?

the fiancee didn't like my 92. Grip was a bit too large (especially with the CT).

She shot my 22/45....loved it.

She shot my 1911...she immediately learned what a "Single Stack" is and fell in love with them.

I no longer have a 1911. :(

And man...you do a bit of driving! From College Station to Carters Country is a bit of a haul there! :) lol

I had an on-again off-again relationship with an ol' gal back in the late '80's that liked to shoot. she near wore out my Marlin mdl 60. (and me too!) women like to have something going on all the time so I had to make some spinning targets to keep her happy.

hey, wake up and smell the gunsmoke! the girls are capable of getting money, just like you. let them buy their own ammo! and good for you for introducing them to it. and good for them, it is a lot of fun, and can be a life saver. hopefully, it will just be fun for all of you for all your lives. now, IF you marry your girlfreind, she WILL be entitled to your guns and ammo. you may want a prenup so you can keep them in case things go bad. hopefully, your sister and gf will get along. take note of that. it can be a good indicator for a long term relationship.

either start reloading or get used to high ammo bills.

i know. i have a gun nut wife and a 14 y.o. stepdaughter who is working on being a gun nut.:scrutiny::D

So, let me see if I got your story right--you have two cute women in your life who both like going to the range with you...and this is a problem? ;)

Seriously though, good for you getting some women interested in shooting. They'll help promote the sport among their friends, and they can get the guys at the range used to seeing women there as more than just arm candy. I can't tell you how many times I see some guy with his GF at the range...he stands there and shoots while her role is simply to stand there and watch her man. Then again, those guys all stop and stare when my wife shows up with her pink range bag, pulls out her S&W, and starts blazing away at 20yds with some .357 magnums! *SIGH* I'm lucky.

As far as cost...well I'm married, so when the boss goes down to the range the money comes out of the same account anyway. Since you guys are just dating, well, girlfriends are expensive. If you have a setup where going dutch is typical, then discuss the option of splitting ammo costs with her. If not, then get her a nice MkII as a gift--this way, when you two go to the range, you bring ammo for your guns and she brings ammo for hers. You can still pay her range fee and she'll probably fire a couple of rounds through your guns, but is that any different than you paying for her movie ticket or her picking off your plate when you take her to dinner? It's just the cost of the game, my friend!

Thanks for the pics.

Blah, wished that

A) I had a GF
B) and that she liked shooting.

But I am ugly so i can safely say "None of the above is to happen"

Pfft.

It's all in the attitude and personality.

My girlfriend is VERY money concious. She said that she's paying for the next time we go, plus she bought me some food at HEB and cooked me dinner that night. Wasn't too bad of a deal if I say so myself. :)

She wants her own pistol. Maybe her dad and I can pull something together like that for christmas. She wants a 9mm or a .38. She likes heavy guns. But she did show a little interest in a CZ P01.
