Wild,

Where do I sign? :D Oh, and you forgot "childs play to work on."

and it’s a bear to detail strip the lockwork.

Huh? One of these days I'll finally be able to get a 1911, and then maybe I'll understand this... just how easy is a 1911 to strip, anyway?

Wes

Ultimate handgun, why that's the S & W model 10, but I'd give 2nd place to the Browning. But that's on Sundays, they change places on alternate days.

I was kidding The Wild One a bit, and enjoying the thread.

That said, in a pinch you can COMPLETELY remove and clean the parts* in a 1911 pistol (as Browning designed it - one with aftermarket accessories may not count - with no tools at all. The parts themselves become tools as you need them. The Hi Power requires a set of punches, and usually a bench vise to hold the frame while removing or replacing the sear. To a lesser degree the same is true of the trigger, extractor and magazine disconector.

Not a big point, but somebody had to take you-know-who on .... :D

* The ejector, grip screw bushings, and plunger tube not included. These are usually not removed/replaced anyway.

You knew somebody had to do it.....

BHP? Silliness!

THE COLT 1911 IS THE ULTIMATE ALL AROUND HANDGUN..

The rationale for this bold, yet so easlily defensaible provocation is a s follows.

1. It fires a cartridge that is ADEQUATE in power for all applications...from target shooting to hself defense to hunting.

2. it has a high (enough) magazine capacity, and magazines are plentiful

3. It is very accurate and poiunts naturally

4. It is relaible, strudy and battle proven

5. It is simple to operate, low recoil

6. It fits VIRTUALLY everbody

7. It conceals very well and is light for its size

8. Available in a variety of sizes and configurations

9. More parts and aftermarket goodies than any other platform

10. Easy to clean and work on

11. Tuner is available online

12. It's prettier (barely) than the BHP

13. If the BHP is so dang great how come WildshamelessgunsellerAlaska has not done a group buy on one. (HA. Can't touch that one can you, Huh?) ((hint, hint, hint))

Whilst some of you may trry to disbause me of this notion you will fail. No other handgun fits all those criteria. I have spoken.

To those of you that mention Glock...read my sig line.

Just a nitpic, but I don't consider the 9mm adequate for hunting (I'm assuming deer sized game or larger, not squirrels and rabbits). It's doable, but so is a 22lr.

Otherwise, I agree on all points. The HP is my favorite 9mm auto, though the Beretta 92 is gaining fast. :D

Smoke,

That assuming you find a 1911 that works. :neener:

I'll take an out the box BHP and day over an OTB 1911, and feel so much more comfortable that it'll actually shoot and not break or jam!

I agree with Smoke. What will a BHP do that a 1911 won't? The 9 minimeter is a borderline cartridge at best, even against two legged predators. The BHP, as fine a weapon as it is, is too limited to be considered the "ultimate". Disassembly is overly complex, and the firing mechanism takes the long way around, up into the slide and back to the frame. It doesn't point any better than a 1911, either. Sgt. Alvin York did not use a BHP.

At FEG or FM HiPower clone prices I'd agree with you, but at Belgian made FN prices you can get a 1911 that be every bit as reliable, have a safety that is much more ergonomic, a much better trigger, and a gun that will shoot the one in the pipe should the mag somehow fall out between now and when you need it.

I like my FEG and FM HiPower clones but have never been willing to part with the $$$ for a genuine FN as I always find guns I lke better for the same or lower price. YMMV.

I'd have to go with a 4-6" .357 magnum revolver as the Ulitmate all-around handgun if you are restricted to 0.35" holes.

Smoke low recoil on the 1911?

Sorry thats the thing that takes it out of the race for many people....

Other than that I would have postulated the 1911...

Then watch the Glock boys scream again

complex disassembly?

You lock the slide open and pull out the slide stop.. you are done. Not much out there simpler than a BHP to field strip.

I didn't say 'field strip', I said 'disassembly', as in replace parts. Even replacing springs is a major PITA.

My BHP with 15 rounds in a proven mag is by my bedside every night. Whenever I wake up to a strange noise I want to put my hand on something comforting and dependable... other than my wife.

as friendly as a Glock!

-down with the BHP, up with the plastic!

-Between a 1911 and BHP, for civilian defense, I'd say the 1911 since it will give you a marginally better round and a slightly better trigger and thumb safety outta da box.

-For war, quite honestly, I rather err on the side of higher capacity since if I'm pulling a pistol, I'd want to use it to make the enemy put his head down so I could run and hide or get a replacement for my rifle. More rounds will help you lay down some grazing fire. I certainly don't want to use it in an attempt to neutralize the enemy unless that's all I had and I'd take capacity over a slightly more powerful cartridge cause I'm gonna miss. Remember: you're down to a pistol in the middle of a war; you're gonna be a bit shaken. I bet ya that's why folks in WWII took their chances with the 1911 as a sidearm over a revolver, DA or SA since it could give one more rounds and a quick reload.

-Biggest reason I like my glock over all the other guns mentioned (which I own BTW: 1911 & BHP) is that I simply don't have to fuss with it, in cleaning, or even in use. No too much fun as a beauty queen but it is a superb tool.

Have at ya!

Wait a minute

Saddam Hussein carried a BHP and he was (is) the evilist evildoer who ever darkened the doorstep of the world! Surely such a man would only pick the world's evilest handgun, correct?! It carries 13 rounds, not 12, not 14 or even 17, 13. 13! Think about it! It's evil!

BHP=JMB's finest design. Sweet pointing and quick into action.
Frame made for most ammo that one would use in USA, +P
or standard pressure. First hi-cap battle NINE.

Glock+ plastic frame, trigger, and delicate springs., just ask anyone who has alot of miles on a Glock.Chuck Taylor for instance.. that thinks a 1000,00 round
Glock with minor spring replacements is infallible. +P, +P+ rated.

Buddy, when the spring(s) breaks, your gun is DOA, or alt least considered
broken for the time being.

CZ75 and offspring= Steel or alloy frame..carried by over 60 military or police
agencies across the world. Reports of over 100,000 count Cee-zeds still perking right along: +P, +P+ and NATO rated. Selective Action service pistol.Considered by some Experts to be the true AK-47 of the pistol world.

Sweet pointing and quick into action.

Sweet pointing I'll not argue with, but quick into action?

IMHO the biggest weakness of the BHP *is* the poor safety lever. About the most fumble prone safety of all the cocked and locked pistols I've ever seen -- only the CZ RAMI comes close to being as bad. With a replacement safety lever that your thumb can actually find and work efficently the problem could be solved.

I don't understand this "safety" deal on the BHP. I am sitting here holding mine in my hand and I can easily flick the safety off and on with my thumb. Matter of fact, I don't see how it can get much easier? Heck, it's ambi too. So, I went and got my other two in order to check them and they are the same way. I'm at a loss of what to say about this deal other than they work great for me? :scrutiny:

I own one and really like it. Even used to carry it.

But it has one rather significant short coming (for me), the trigger reset is terrible, almost as bad as a DAO.

WA: Let's check that last one, shall we?

Wildandthecz75isanalsoranAlaska

?
Wild and the cz75 is anal . . . WHAT??

Wild, I'm not the world's biggest CZ fan, but, hey, man - - Ease up on that stuff.

:p

If I were king of the universe, I would promulgate SEVERE penalties for the misuse of the terms ULTIMATE and UNIQUE. There is only one ULTIMATE anything. If there's any serious discussion to be had on the topic, then ULTIMATE does NOT apply. ("And the 870 shotgun loaded with [insert favorite size] buickshot is the ULTIMATE cape buffalo stopper!")

Something is only UNIQUE if it is one-of-a-kind. "Pretty unique," or "Almost unique," are nonsense terms.

WA, I'll give you this - - The BHP is easily my favorite medium-bore autoloading handgun. It IS very handy, accurate enough, feels good in MY hand, compact enough, soft on recoil, its general ergonomics are quite nice, has a straightforward manual of arms, has been in WIDE distribution, and all that.

My compliments, too - - You've cranked up a lively topic, and a worthy - - For this crowd ;) - - distraction from the multitudinous miscellaneous maunderings of misguided moguls.

Best,
Johnny
