if money were no object, what rifles would you buy?

A nice double rifle in .416 Rigby. (And money would really have to be no object.)

I'm content with what I have, but if money really didn't matter I kind of like to have a .375 H&H double and a custom built .257 Roberts on a pre-64 Winchester 70 action. I'd also like a .308 Norma Mag on the pre-64 Winchester 70 action. I know - the .300 Win Mag will do everything the .308 Norma Mag will. In fact, a lot of experienced hunters swear by the century old 30-06. And I can't argue with them. But when I was a teenager, my girlfriend's Dad had a .308 Norma Mag that I lusted after. That was in the days just before Winchester came out with their .300 Mag and a lot of hunters, like my girlfriend's Dad, had their 30-06s converted to .308 Norma Mag. If some guys dream about cars they couldn't have in their youth, it's okay for me to dream about the guns I couldn't have. Besides, you said money was no object. :D

1. A scaled down 1885 Hi-wall that a 38 spec just fits with a 20" tapered octagon barrel, globe front sight and tang mounted rear. It would be a great 100 yd ground hog gun.

2. A Charles Daly Mini Mauser, 18" round barrel, accurized and tricked out and matte blued in 6.5 grendel with a 2x7 Luepold compact scope. It would be a great Eastern Woods Whitetail rifle.

3. M4A3 without three round burst, ACOG.

4. Matched set of Win Mod 70 Compact Classics in the following calibers; 22-250 & 243 with 20" bull barrels, 250-3000, 260rem, 7mm-08, 308, 358win with Leupold compact scopes to match in Warne QD rings..

5. No4 Remington Rolling Block in 22 Khornet or 218 bee with old style target 10x scope.

MONEY NO OBJECT?

Teddy Roosevelt's Holland & Holland double . . .

Karamojo Bell's 7x57 . . .

Annie Oakley's lever action Winchester . . .

Carlos Hathcock's Model 70 . . .

The show-special centerpiece rifles from the last 10 or 15 SCI conventions . . .

A 20mm Solothurn . . .

A 57mm recoiless . . .

Really now, on a slightly more serious note, if I had an unlimited budget to buy rifles that weren't of any particular historical significance, I'd have an H&H double in .475 #2 NE built for myself, and I'd also get an MP5SD, Colt Monitor, Colt Thompson, a Barrett .50, and a bunch of custom-built bolt-action rifles (including good optics) chambering cartridges from .22 LR to .458 Lott . . . as well as a Shiloh Sharps (The Quigley rifle variation.)

If money were no object I'd be skipping down to the pentagon right about now with my christmas list.

I've settled upon a much simpler answer.

One of each.

And multiples of some.

Mike :D

In related news, I wonder how much Reed Knight would charge for his whole collection.

Mike ;)

Four each of the following ( I like having more than one of stuff):

M1 Garands (either CMP ones "upgraded" with newer parts, or new SA ones, assuming the latter are of good quality)

SKSes

SMLEs (preferably good ones chambered in .308, but if money's no object, I could survive .303 ^_^)

A menagerie of AR-15s

Milsurp "Old School" rifles out the wazoo

Some belt-fed machineguntypes..

A semi-automatic rifle capable of 1/2 MOA, chambered in an improved version of .950JDJ, with hydraulic recoil arrestors and one big scope. Also, I would of course want some sort of aided aiming mount, as 1/2 MOA means nothing if I have the shakes. :D

I shudder to think what the actual pricetag on a behemoth like that would be.

Honestly I just do not know.

So I would have to try them all out just to see which ones I found interesting. :D

AHEM,
Definitely: M249 SPW with red dot,
MSG-90DMR (with bipod, silencer, 10xscope, like Leupold),
Optionally (considering the limited storing room)
Barrett's M99 .50cal,
F2000/M203 with Fire Control Computer
OICW?

Tokugawa,

In a drilling, you'd certainly want the 9.3x74mm.

I'd really like to have a suppressed Bizon III in 7.62x25mm.
I'd also like to have a custom "Ghost Scout" suppressed .35 Whelen on a 1917 action.
I'd like a mini-Mauser in 9x23mm, with a 17" bl.
I'd like a lot of things. Mostly, I'd like to wander off into the woods with a good rifle and no watch.

Yeah, it's a shame he offed himself with it, but what a piece of history.

Fun question, lets see...

-Steyr Scout, .308 with leupold glass
-Para FAL
-18" Robar .308
-Glock 34
-Just about every AR Zak has ever posted, though I really just want one good one I can shoot the crap out of, with an Aimpoint and an ACOG I can switch between.
-VEPR with an ultimak
-Honest to God Dragunov
-M1A Scout and a SOCOM
-Suppressed Ruger 22/45
-M1D Garand
-A Bison in 9mm or 7.62x25
-a Krink
-OH! Almost forgot the AK variant that I just found out existed, the integrally supressed one that takes 9x39. Mmm...

That ought to do it for now, along with a few cases of ammo for each, and extra mags... and slings... and holsters.. .and cases... and a safe... and a some shrubberies, one a little higher than the other to create a nice two-level effect with a path down the middle...

Let's start with the basics and work up:

Winchester 52 sporter in .22 LR

Pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 in .22 Hornet, .22-250, .30-06 and .375 H&H. And maybe in .458 Win Mag.

Maybe a new Winchester Classic Lightweight in 7mm-08.

Savage Model 99s -- in every caliber they were made in.

Yeah, it would be definitely nice to have one of that (actually both, VSS and AS) and MSG90A1 in my locker.

It's VSS (Vintovka Snaiperskaja Spetsialnaya = Special Sniper Rifle) and is effective up to 400m, even against body armor. By the way, the VSS has a companion, the AS (Special Machine Carbine), that has similar design, but is rather an assault rifle than sniper rifle. Still even VSS has single shot and full auto modes so it can be used as AR.
