If I had to select one from my collection, Glock 17, hands down.
If I had the chance to choose others, I'd want to try the USP with a can (if we're just wishing here), the Glock 19, and a SIG before making the final decision. Like many of you've said - reliability is the first criteria. I'd still probably take the Glock 17 over the others.
I'll stick with my Norinco 213. It looks cool, never jams and is a breeze to take down and clean. The trigger group comes out as an assembly; just dunk it to clean. It's not the most refined pistol, which means it has some looser tolerances than most, which really means that the gun isn't finicky at all. It always works. It's also freakishly accurate. Cheap and very thin, too.
Yay!
Alas, they no longer make the custom ASP design. Really it was a S&W model 39 with about 230 modifications, .
If you ever saw a ASP 9mmNATO pistol you'd see why it would be the "best".
Of the more common 9mmNATO weapons in the US, I'd go with a HK P-2000 LEM or maybe a P-30 LEM, .
I guess one has to decide if he wants a good range gun and home gun or one that he can carry concealed. Most of those mentioned in this thread are great range and home guns but IMO certainly not carry guns. I wo uld be hapy with damn near anyone of those mentioned for paper punching and desk drawer but none would float my boat for 24/7 carry.
