If you could only have 5 different calibers what would they be?

For me it would be:
22LR - rifle & pistol and cheap ammo
38/357 - good supply of launchers
45ACP - Because it make big holes
7.62x39 - An abundance of a lot of cheap ammo
12Ga - Because it makes bigger holes and that pump action sounds cool.

For me it would be:

.22LR (Rifle in bolt/semi/lever and semi-auto/revolver hand guns)
.357 Mag / 38 Spec (Revolver and lever action carbine)
9mm (Semi and maybe a PCC, or if could get is a second cylinder for the 357 Revolver) - Just like the capacity in a Semi-Auto though
.30-06 Great game getter and very flexible in round choice
12-Gauge Clays, hunting, SD with a multibarrel pump you cover a lot of options

.22 LR for fun
9mm for SD/CCW

I used to buy anything and everything, but I'm trying to keep things more consolidated now. Maybe add 5.56 or .300 Blackout if I get an AR down the road. Don't need a long gun for HD in a tiny one bedroom apartment. (I think the longest shot in here is about 12 feet, if that.)

I've got five spread across all my possible uses, to be honest I haven't had the 45/70 in a practical situation yet, got that lined up next year tho

22mag
22/250
308
45/70
12 gauge

22 LR
38 Special
9mm (for semi-autos)
44 special
12 ga.

If I really wanted to, I'd swap the 38 Special or the 9mm for a 30/30 rifle, but I shoot a lot more handgun than I do rifle.

I would have:

22 lr
40s&w
7.62x39
7.62 nato
12ga

If you can't kill it with a .308 you probably shouldn't be shooting at it.

Ok. Just for fun ....5 cartridges and a future bizzaro world with a lead ban and a $1.00 per. round tax.
17mk2
357
5.56
Any one of the big .30s

12ga

.22 = .22lr, .223, .22/250
.30 = .30 carbine, .308, 7.62x54, .303, 30.06, .300 mag, .300 blackout, .300 WSM
.38 = .38 spl, .357 mag, 9mm, .380
.45 = .45acp, 45/70, .45 colt
.50 = .50 Beowulf, .50 BMG, .50 GI
That covers a lot of territory, and I stayed with just 5 calibers.

12 gauge - home defense
45 ACP - it's my favorite pistol cartridge
22 LR - it's a good inexpensive round

The rifle rounds get harder as only two calibers left to choose
308 - versatile as I can use it in semi auto and I can hunt with it
30-30 - I love my lever action a lot so,it's gotta be here

In all honesty, I'd be quite fine limited to just these. I'd miss the 30-06 a bit and the 45-70 but life would go on.

OK, I'll play:

22 long rifle
45-70
308
38 Special/357 Magnum
12 gauge (shot shell)

There are no 223s in my battery! Its a varmit cartridge!, nor any auto pistol cartridges since IMO the wheel gun is by far more versatile than any auto -

I'm 70 years old and have spent a lifetime playing in the outdoors. Yes, i own three 45 Autos (a Kimber 1911 pattern, a Para-Ordnance, and a Glock 30), and auto pistols from 25ACP up.

But I'm just a cranky old timer and darned set in my ways. Experience was a harsh teacher...

.22= 22lr,22mag and .223/5.56
.30= 32acp, 30 carbine,300 blk, 30/30, 30/40, .308 and 30-06
.35= 9mm, 38 special, 357 mag, 35 rem
.45= 45acp, 45 Colt and 45/70
Add in a 12guage and that'll cover a bunch of ground.

12 gauge for targets
28 gauge for birds
.22lr for fun and critters
7mm mag for large critters
9x19 for SD/EDC

Nice to see some folks differentiating between calibers and cartridges.... ;)
