If you could only have 5 different calibers what would they be?

Pretty much what I have already...

.22LR - for everything up to deer

.257 Roberts - for deer up to and possibly including elk

7.62X54r - unlikely to really need it for anything, but would be better than the Bob for elk & up

9mm - SP

20 ga - 'Cause I like it better than 12 ga

...

22 mag or 22 hornet
7mm-08
375 H&H, or maybe 416 of some sort.
44 mag
12 gauge, though I prefer 20 for everything but waterfowl.

Reasoning, 22lr is nice, but a hornet can be very flexible, 22 mag easier to shoot in bulk (than the hornet) and more uses than 22lr. Anything from mice to coyotes at a limited range.

7mm-08 useful on anything coyote size to elk, shoots flat, light rifle for running around mountains after sheep/goats.

375 H&H large/dangerous game, bears in the US, anything in Africa.

44 mag would prefer something smaller for a pistol, but this way could have a good, handy lever gun and pistol. Although, perhaps a short slug barrel for a shotgun would allow having a 9mm or 45 instead.

22 LR
223
9 mm
357
12 gauge

-- 45 ACP if I could sneak it in, and 308

.22 LR
7.62X39mm
.45-70 Gov't.
.12 Ga
.357 Magnum

(I wish I could put 7.62X54Rmm in there but need at least one shotgun and one pistol caliber.) :(

.22LR - Plinking & small game.

.300 Win - I load everything from 30/30 velocities to do I really have to pull this trigger velocities.

.357 Mag - Love my 66.

.410 - Cant help it I'm addicted.

12ga - For when all else fails.

These are the neccesities but I'd much rather have ten. Five is so limiting but I guess I could cut way back on the number of dies under the bench.

-.22LR- Plinking, small game hunting, small gun self-defense

-9mm Luger- Self defense, target shooting

-.45 Colt- Target shooting, hunting medium sized game, self defense

-.308 Winchester or 8mm Mauser, I like them both very much and about equally- Target shooting, long range shooting, hunting medium-large size game between 100-1,000 meters.

-12 Gauge- Self defense, hunting small, medium and large size game, clay shooting, anything but sniper duties really.

I really want to put a few more on there, but can only use 5:scrutiny:

Five CALIBERS?

.22 (includes rimfire thru 22-250)

.30 (30 Carbine thru .300 Magnum)

.36 (9mm thru .357)

.40 (38-40 to .40 S&W to 10mm)

.45 (.45 GAP thru .410 shotshell thru .454 Casull)

I'd like a .44 magnum, but I could get by with .45 Colt.

Then I'd add 2 gauges, 12 and 20 (these are not "calibers.")

.22LR - Prolific, extremely affordable, rounds per pound.

9x19 - Affordable, widely available, high-rounds-per-mag average.

.357 Magnum / 38 Special - Powerful, reliable platform, suitable for hunting small-medium game.

.308 Win - Suitable for hunting medium-large game, long range capability, multitude of platforms.

12GA - Affordable, prolific, broad range of applications, multitude of platforms.

9x19 - My carry gun preference. Perfect (for me) balance of terminal ballistics, cost, availability, capacity, size, etc.

5.56x45 - All around rifle cartridge. An AR for home defense, SHTF, range shooting, some hunting, etc.

.22lr - Because it is so inexpensive, readily available, great for training and new shooters, great for small game...

.357 magnum (which is also .38spl) - For a handgun capable of a little more power, great for the woods east of the Mississippi (and some of the West too), with snub nose J-frame size revolvers as my preference in pocket guns

Undecided, either 12 gauge or.308/7.62x51

.22lr--small game, pest control, practice, fun
9mm--2-legged preditors under 25yds
.223--2&4-legged predetors over 25 yds
30-30--medium-large game
.308--anything bigger than a rabbit and/or over 300yds

If I get a shotgun, which don't technically come in calibers, then I could sub a 12g for the 30-30, as it can do everything the 30-30 can plus take care of the winged things

Ok, if I had to choose 5 cartridges, to do all _I_ need to do, they'd be:
