If you could only have one gun for everything. . .

If Forced to...

... go with a single pistol, I guess I'd pick my Glock G20.

10mm Auto with STANDARD(never refer to them as "preban") capacity 15rnd mags, in a package that I can CCW without discomfort.

Not quite as compact as my S&W 1066, but it can allow the carry of 31 rounds with a spare standard mag. The same configuration for CCW with the 1066 would only give 19 rounds(heh, 'only' 19 rnds. of 10mm:D ).

Make the carry ammo McNett's DT 135gr HP(I'm perhaps overly cautious on over-penetration) or 165gr HP's and CCW is covered. For IDPA, either DT match 180gr or Georgia Arms 180gr would suffice.

If allowed a second choice of a different caliber, it's a tie between my Beretta 96 Inox Compact L and the Sig 229 in .357Sig.

Any of the above will get the job done if the shooter is up to the task.

My Half lug S&W 586 4"
But since this is the Auto forum I would pick my 1952 Sistema 1911, with a Ace upper added and reloading it would be fairly inexpensive to shoot.

Ah Mr. McNutt-san.....

have you not heard of the great American martial art.....ICheatMoFo, and the ever popular: ChingChangBoomBoom? The arts started with some unnamed gunsmiths in Pennslyvania that started adding a twist to ze bullet, furthered by a gents named Colt, Winchester, Gatling, Browning, Garand, Stoner and countless others.
Conversion units are accessories..therefore hard to regulate and control.
I have had one for years, so one would disappear(oops) into an ammo can somewhere, with a few more goodies too(like an old and trusted Government model, mags and lots of ammo).
BUT, in the interest of playing in a game that has had the rules changed midstream...I still chose the .45 auto...then a Dillon Square B, so I can afford to shoot alot and make more mission specific ammo.....or is that cheating too? :scrutiny: ;)

A year ago (or longer) I would have said a nice semi-custom 1911 (Rock River or similar) with a Marvel would be my answer. Maybe with an alloy frame for a bit lighter carry. 45ACP both standard pressure and +P are formidable stoppers and with the Marvel, $25 still gets you 100 rounds of 45s and a couple hundred rounds of 22s... A nice afternoon and with a couple springs, 45 Super for hunting things that might just bite back.

Nowdays, I'd be more tempted to say a PCR or a P-01 since I have recently fell under the spell of a PCR that I effectively got for free (once you factor in a couple of profitable gun sales). I don't know if there exists a 22 conversion with the PCR/P-01/Compact sized slide but that would be nice. In a pinch, the Cadet will work, but a same sized conversion would be nice. And the hottest 9mm can and will kill deer (where legal) with a decent load and proper shot placement - see Mr Camp's posts on said hunting.

since conversion units count apparently:
The Taurus 94 .22lr Double Action 9-shot revolver w/5'' barrel

i'm not rockefeller, for me and most average joes whatever it is it's gotta be a .22 because i enjoy shooting and would be giving up a lot of range time with anything else. The 94 is built on a J-frame so it's actually quite slender and can be concealed. For reasons that should be obvious i'd only use a rimfire defensive gun if it were in a revolver. the 5 inch barrel makes small game hunting a possibility as well.

If I had to recommend to someone one pistol that could adequately cover all possible uses of a pistol (defense, hunting, plinking, etc.) I'd tell them to get a S&W 686 4" or 6".

However, in my own case it would have to be a full size 1911. Since by the rules of the scenario I don't have to worry about saving for all the additional guns I keep buying:D I'll still have plenty of money left for ammo, so that's not a problem.

Do we get to own a rifle too?

Rifles and shotguns are fine. I just wanted to see how different everybody is. I love the answers I've received.

Even though I said I'd probably go with the CZ P-01 it would be pretty hard to not own a 1911.

I live in South Africa. We are allowed only one handgun. So I had to make that choice. I picked a Colt Series 70 1981 model. It is the 'not so good years of colt 1911's' as far as I gather. I have not regretted it to date. Still shoot and carry it. The perfect handgun for the Urban Africa jungle. I am currentlt working very had to get a special permit to get a second Series 70 of the same age.

I would have to pick my 3rd gen Glock 21 for the one-and-only. There is very little it cannot do if I do my part up to deer-size game, and the longer sight radius and higher velocity would be beneficial if it were the only. It is currently my ccw most days, and 45 is a proven man-stopper. 13+1 capacity with high-caps would be helpful. Night sights would be a must for evening encounters.

I think I just listed a couple of accessories I NEED!

Well, if I could only have one from now on for the things you said you would use it for, it would be a Smith & Wesson model 66 or 65 with a 4 inch barrel - if it had to be a revolver. If it had to be a semi-auto pistol, then I would go with the Glock model 17 9mm. If I had to pick between the two, the revolver would get the nod. Although, the G17 would be dang near equal - it's the "revolver" of semi auto pistols. I would surely miss my 1911s. If a 1911 was all you owned and you could maintain it, then I would say stick with it.

It's just that IF you say you can ONLY have one from now on, then you have to figure which will be the most useable in any situation and physical ability - I thnk the revolver wins.

If you can change as you go but only keep one, then I'd suggest you start with the revolver, become proficient with it, then go to the Glock or 1911 depending on your needs/wants/ability and if and when your physical ability changed - go with which ever is appropriate.

If you are in good shape and can operate any of them with ease and have to use store bought ammo, then the G17 wins by economy of the caliber. If cost of ammo is not a factor and you can keep it running yourself, the 1911 wins by economy of the "fit" (for me).

I sure am thankful I don't have to make a decision like this. They all have there usefulness in different areas at different times.

Of course, YMMV
