If Forced to...
... go with a single pistol, I guess I'd pick my Glock G20.
10mm Auto with STANDARD(never refer to them as "preban") capacity 15rnd mags, in a package that I can CCW without discomfort.
Not quite as compact as my S&W 1066, but it can allow the carry of 31 rounds with a spare standard mag. The same configuration for CCW with the 1066 would only give 19 rounds(heh, 'only' 19 rnds. of 10mm ).
Make the carry ammo McNett's DT 135gr HP(I'm perhaps overly cautious on over-penetration) or 165gr HP's and CCW is covered. For IDPA, either DT match 180gr or Georgia Arms 180gr would suffice.
If allowed a second choice of a different caliber, it's a tie between my Beretta 96 Inox Compact L and the Sig 229 in .357Sig.
Any of the above will get the job done if the shooter is up to the task.
