If you could own 1 handgun and 1 rifle...

Way too hard of a question...but, if only one of each, and I'd be using it for hunting and home defense, survival, concealed carry, etc; it would probably be my Beretta 92FS and my Keltec Sub2000 which uses Beretta 92 Mags. That way handgun and long gun would use interchangeble ammo and magazines.

I want to change my answer. For the pistol, if I could have one it would be the one I chose already as my primary shooter/carry gun. The M&P 9C. Mine has been carried for a few years now and shot thousands of times. It still looks and shoots like the day it was new. I have no reason to believe it wouldn't outlast me.

For my one and only rifle, I would choose a Remington Mdl 700 in .308.

Hoot,
I have been on the same mission lately. I just purchased a CZ P-01 as my first gun :), and am leaning toward a Savage 10FP for my rifle. What do you all think?

A 308 bolt-action rifle (Remington 700 or similar) and a Makarov. The Makarov, while uninspiring, is a decent all around pistol, and inexpensive enough that one can spend money on a better rifle.

hmm, I really disagree with most of these posts.

The money should be spent on the handgun.

The handgun is what you have with you all the time, the rifle is for... EXTREMLY limited application.

and when it comes to bolt guns, a 300 dollar savage will do most of what a bolt gun should do.

I think, the pistol should be 2/3rds of the $$$$.

so for me, <since this is what I have chosen myself>

CZ P01 pistol $450,CT lasergrips $199, and Ruger 10/22 customized as you see fit.

Fun plinker and CCW.

Mauser actioned .30-06 and a 4" DA .357. With the right handloads, the rifle is good for anything from small game to moose, and the sixgun from small game to self defense.

my Beretta PX4 9mm

Mossberg 500 (2 barrels 24" multi choke barrel, 24" slug barrel)

Ammo,ammo,ammo

Keep it simple, 40 cal high point pistol and carbine.clips are interchangeable, and 30 bucks gets 100 rounds.both guns can be bought for around 500.00.at 100 yards the carbine will throw a good group out of the box! If you like a revolver, sp101 357 and lever gun in same caliber.that will come closer to the grand limit you set but will serve you well.stock piling ammo in the same caliber just makes sense.if you don't plan on ccw, the gp100 in 357
would be great.

C'mon, y'all. If you want to keep playing long after the OP's question was answered (and he has now replied with what he purchased), at least try to stick with his parameters:
1 handgun for self defense/ home protection and one rifle for general use on a $1000 budget.
But as far as I'm concerned, this one has run its course.

jericho .40 s&w and a rifle- doesn't matter what one to me, but you didn't list it's primary purposes.
