If You Go Out In The Woods Tonight....

Don't forget the Mountain Lions up here too. I know the State swears there are none but they are here.
I have heard the rumors but have never seen one.
Did find some strange tracks deep in the mountains of Elk County a few years ago. Could have been bobcat which I have seen up close but these tracks were kinda washed out by rain. Could have been mountain lion.
I know the Pa Game Commission denied there were coyotes in Pa for years even when photos and dead coyotes were presented as evidence.

Yeah, theY do deny a lot. As for lions, a hunting buddy of mine showed me a picture of a Mountain Lion his son shot two years ago and it was BIG! I have seen tracks in the snow too that were just to big to be anything else.

Sorry to the OP for the sidetrack.

Well, as soon as I heard the voice of George Noore, I switched off the podcast. So much for that.

But when I did head out into the woods, I carried some kind of 22 for the most part.

My thanks to OP for starting this thread. I knew of the 411 missing project but last night I took the time to listen to an interview with David P about hunters and it reaffirmed my woods carry choice ;)

I live in Brown Bear country. My old LAR Grizz .45 Win Mag is my trail gun. It is carried in a LAR cross chest holster. I hope I never need to use it. Have you ever looked at a Male Grizz over handgun sights? You will want to climb a very tall Ponderosa Pine.:)

That is something I hope to avoid. There has not been a Griz spotted in New Mexico for about 100 years and I hope it stays that way.

I used to kid about my Colt Heritage Walker loaded to the max with 60 grains of powder and a hard ball. I figured if the ball didn't stop him, the muzzle blast would ignite the fur on the greasy old boar. Not likely but kind of amusing to think about.

B.Smoke. I load the 220 grs. LEE cast bullet in my Walker. I use 40 grs. of T-7. This produces a powerful load in a handgun. I really enjoy shooting the Walker revolvers.
I had Mike at Goon's Gun service up grade my Walker. He can make a Walker more functional. I would not want to face a Big Grizz with any handgun. But it is your last chance in a confrontation.

Old Ben cleared them out but you have to admit it would make the woods a bit more interesting.

Interesting interview (I love Coast to Coast!). I feel far safer deep in the woods than anywhere else. I’ve been all over this globe in jungles, cities, deserts and combat zones…give me any remote wilderness and I’ll take my chances!

My wife and I have been doing a lot of distance backpacking. Some along the PCT (WA area), but since I’ve been stationed here in GA, we have been doing chunks of the AT. Most of our backpacking is anywhere between 75-150 miles and my choice for carrying my CCW is a Hill People Gear Kit Bag. I’m carrying something, guaranteed!

I laugh at some of these replies.

Those guns and gear aren't going to keep the alien sasquatch swamp monster from climin' in yo window and snachin' yo' people up!! :D

Really, some cool guns in this thread.

That's sort of how I feel about it. I spent the better part of 5 or 6 years nomadding around N Az and the Rockies, mostly in N Az. Besides a couple years off and on it a tipi, I slept out on the ground under the stars about as much as anything, if not that, then in the back of my truck. After I moved farther north and into good grizzly country, it raised my alert level somewhat, but I still slept out on the ground under the stars a fair bit. After the woofs were reintroduced, it added another element to be aware of, but so far, I haven't been taken by any aliens (that I know of), nor eaten by bears, cats or woofs. The 4" smith 29 has had a lot of miles on my belt and literally years of time either in my hand at night or next to me when I slept out, depending on perceived level of alert. More times than I can recall, Ive awakened to my dog low growling at something off in the darkness or moonlight, mostly coyotes, seemingly perplexed at what the heck was sleeping out in their hills.

Interesting! I would have been too scared to do that.

I don't think a handgun will prevent the alien abductions. Well, maybe a FN 5.7 . . .

For general outdoor open carry, I take my 8 shot S&W 627 revolver. I'd be happy with a 10mm too, 627.jpg if I had one.

Man I wish we could talk about aliens and stuff, but I know that's not allowed in this forum so I won't.

Yep, my Makarov PM would do the trick around here against anything I would face in the woods... at least I hope! :what:

I don't know about any shadow people or other Norry fare, but in my neck of the woods truthfully the thing that most concerns me is feral's, mainly dogs but also people. There are also very infrequent sightings of black bear, but nothing larger unless you stir farm animals into the mix. As such, any decent CCW gun is pretty adequate. My discrete guns are a Ruger KLCR loaded with +p .38's and a Glock 43 loaded with +p 9mm. I shoot both well within reasonable range and both are almost unnoticeable to carry & give me a pretty good comfort level. Beyond that, for holster carry I have a GP100 Match Champion .357, though I still prefer +p .38's or moderate .357's. Also have a couple service size 9mm's. A G17 and hopefully soon, a Sig 226 SAO Legion. With a good belt & holster any will carry well. I really like the Ruger GP MC and that was my choice when at my buddies camp in the PA mountains. However I will say the ammo capacity of the 9's is a very nice & comforting feature. I plan on getting some of the BB outdoorsman ammo in both 9mm and .38+p for future endeavors and look forward to trying it out. The reports I've seen a very encouraging.

When I go hiking, Metal Detecting, etc. in the low or high desert areas, I most often carry my S&W .45 Colt Mountain Gun 4" barrel, in a cross draw holster. I usually have snake shot in the first two cylinders , followed by 4 loaded with .250gn Hard Cast Flat Nose SWC.

Fair enough. Mine's close. 629-1 .44 magnum.

When I saw your shoulder holster I was reminded of when I first started out hiking in the woods during the colder months. I used a surplus M7 Tanker Holster under an M65 Field Jacket as my concealed carry set-up. Back in those days I was on a very tight budget and it was the only holster I had for a larger, full size gun. It always served me well and was very comforting to have along for the walk.

I live in eastern Florida. There isn't much in the way of "big" four-leggers around the trails I spend time on, so two-leggers would be the biggest threat, just like in town.

I usually have my EDC (PF9 or .38 snub) and a .22 NAA mini revolver.

That was what I carried my 1911s in. Worked as intended.
