If You Go Out In The Woods Tonight....

I wander in the woods regularly on perhaps 300 or so days a year. Sometimes just short treks and sometimes longer. I carry whatever happens to catch my fancy that particular day, as I have a fair selection of choices. I have to say this whole situation seems to be overthought by many....or perhaps I just don't choose to obsess over things like this.
Sometimes I am feeling a bit feisty and wear my new model Blackhawk 44 with the drop loop holster .
Or a chest rig for the 8 inchers

I have a hankering for a 2.5 inch .454casull ruger alaskan.
And I will probably end up with one

I don't have time to watch a nearly 2 hour program at the moment. But the few minutes I did watch leads me to believe that the story is an overreaction and a lot of sensationalism. There are a lot more people who walk out into the woods and are never seen than most people realize. I volunteer with a group that goes out and looks for them. Virtually all are suicides or drug overdoses.

Since October there have been 5 people here in GA who have left a suicide note inside their car, left it parked alongside a trail head and vanished. I've been involved in searches for 2 of them. So far not a trace, in a year or 2 a hunter will probably find some bones belong to 1-2 of them. Statistics say that 1/3 will never be found.

Meth is the drug of choice in rural areas. When you OD you get the sensation that your clothes are on fire. People strip down and simply run. Since they are also paranoid they usually run into the woods to hide. They are so high on the drugs they feel no pain, often running naked through briar patches until they simply collapse and die. I've found a few of those.

But at the same time I always carry a handgun of some type in the woods. If if bear country either a G20 or G29. If no bears where I'm hiking either a G19 or G26.

Depends on where I'm going and how long. Up the local "mountain", just take the Buckmark or Kahr P9. Walking the dog at night, probably the same, although the 38 Super 1911 is now in the mix.

And Coast to Coast can be fun, so long as you aren't expecting all the guests to be on their meds.

other than it was cool.

Got to admit, that will do it. And the guns balance themselves nicely.

I don't always carry both, but depending on what part of the mountains I am going (not hunting), I have these along. In Idaho we have Black bears, Mountain lions, and Grey wolves around here, plus a few two legged predators.

Other times I'll carry my Colt's Lightweight Commander in .45 ACP. My wife carries her Ruger Security Six 4". We both believe in the old adage "Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it."

Works for us.

Billyzz, you could leave all that firepower at home and just take that big dog of yours!

I always just carried whatever I happened to be carrying if I were out in the woods or hunting (usually a .40 caliber semi-auto). Then one day while hunting on a friends place down close to Columbus, Ga. I came face to face with a feral hog while I was on the ground. After that I started carrying my old Dan Wesson .357 when I went to the woods. Though in truth I believe the ammunition in the gun is as important as the caliber of the gun.

I carry a S&W Model 67 Combat Masterpiece in .357 Magnum. I've come up on bears twice, simply backed up and left the bear alone. If he doesn't bother me, I won't bother him. What I really worry about sometimes are the mountain lions. If you see one of those bad boys, you're probably already in trouble.

I take my PMR30 with two extra mags which only adds about 1.5 pounds total and that is with 90 rounds of 22 magnum. Not worried about bears, just shoot the person next to me in the leg.

I expect to stop a Grizz I would shoot the front shoulders. When the bear loses his steering gears you may win. A Brown Bear can cover 100 yards with out his heart and make a kill before dying. Any attempt to place a killing shot on that dished skull would involve some luck. Maybe this is all meaningless just my wondering mind out of control.:uhoh:

Well thankfully all we have here in Texas is black bears, cougars, very big hogs, and coyotes. None as bad as a Grizzly. Might add snakes to but usually you either see them in time to move away or you don't...

It's 24 degrees now outside... bet hogs are really moving now as I write this with a cup of coffee in a nice warm house! Just found my little toe was infected. Fixed that and now back to a warm bed! I ain't going outside!

I've seen bears in the woods, and I know there are lions around. Someone swore they saw a chupacabra once but I reckon those are pretty scarce. I usually have my Glock 29 on me when I go into the woods. Frequently I'll add a Ruger Mk II, and, if it's hunting season, a rifle or shotgun, appropriate for the game.

If I hit the woods I usually take my Glock 29 with me though if I went somewhere known for bears and it was legal I would take my Marlin 1895.

I went hiking in the Pisgah National Forest with a buddy last June to find a fishing hole. I carried my avatar pic .45ACP in my camera bag. We walked 6 hours looking for the trail and never saw a living thing that moves. We found the trail at the 5.5 hour mark and got back to the truck on it. The trail head was 30 yards from the truck but hidden by foliage. image.jpg Very peaceful and relaxing but the muscles were sore the next two days.

Rugar blackhawk in 45 or BFR 454 with the right ammo what else would I ever need ?Lions tiger and bear and even that pesky wabbit with shotshells.
More often than not I carry a Shew 60lb Long bow.
