If you were president..

Oh, the horror! I didn't follow The Party Line. I must be a running dog Revisionist and Ideologically Impure. Time to ship me off to a May the Fifth Reeducation Camp.

It's not "anti gun". It's using my forebrain instead of my testicles to think with, which is what they pay the President the big bucks to do. Why would I carry a gun?

If the gun is a tool for self protection it would be a poor one. It would actually detract from my safety and security.

If it's "a badge of office" you're thinking small. As President I'm already the third biggest Swinging Richard in the world right after the Premier of China and the King of Saudi Arabia. I don't need a crown, a scepter or a badge to tell anyone who I am or let them know I'm powerful.

If it's "a comfort", then I don't understand the two points above.

although four deaths in a couple hundred years isn't a bad track record.

Doesn't sound so bad when you say it that way...

But look at it another way. Lincoln was the first president asssasssinated (#16), so that makes four of the last twenty-eight, or an average one out of every 7.

Not the worst of odds, I guess, but...you still want that job? :)

Nah - have the First Lady pack a pistol in her purse.

Isn't that what Ronnie did???:D

I'm pretty sure that any weapon the PotUS carried would be strictly ceremonial in nature, as there are far better safegaurds for him than a simple sidearm.

That being said, the only two options would be a Colt 1911 or a Smith & Wesson Model 10. No Euro-guns here with plastic frames or DA mechanisms.

Also, the President should carry a decorated M1917 Patton Saber with him. Imagine how much the Presidential Sword would be worth!

What I wonder is how many presidents did carry. And what did they carry?

Years ago, President George H.W. Bush stated that he carried at least one revolver EVERYWHERE he went!

There was one event that he produced one of those mini .22lr revolvers from his trouser pocket (on camera!) and laid it across the palm of his hand, if memory serves me.

Other Presidents. . . . I dunno. Good question!!

No, I would the security up to my pvt security detail :D But for shiggles, I'd carry a USP 9 & 45 and maybe go w/ a ar15 ;)

Tellner get out of here with your rational thinking and reality based comments;)

I would carry a 1911, nickeled with pearl grips with the Presidential seal embossed on to the grips.

Wonder if the President or any past Presidents carry? I know I would, and I bet I wouldn't have to have a permit.

People overestimate the secret service. Where were they when Jimmy Carter was assaulted by rabbits? And the UFO he saw - the Secret Service didn't help him there, either.
You might want to carry the Taurus 4410 revolver with .410 buckshot for the first cylinder or two for the rabbits, and a Mauser 712 Broomhandle with shoulder stock with API ammo for taking down UFOs.

Yup, I'd carry.

Mainly because I could. Tellner is right about evacuation, anybody is an idiot who WANTS to stick around in a gunfight. With a half dozen well armed individuals scurrying me away, I'm going with them. I'd carry for the one-in-a-million weird event that catches everyone flat footed. The world isn't perfect, not all people are good, I carry a gun due to the first two statements.

Having said all that, a well worn but internally refurbished 1911 would be the cats meow. CCW most times, open carry when away from political events. Who's going to tell you you can't? You're the PRESIDENT!

Why you DON'T want me as CinC:

Dual 7" custom double-stack 1911-derivatives of my own design, with interchangeable top halves for .50GI, .45Super/.450SMC and 10mm, in a dual shoulder-holster, and a reproduction WWII General Officer's Pistol belt with 2 parkerized 1908 .380's, left and right. Also, replicas of Patton's revolvers on the same belt, and an assortment of spare mags in IWB carriers.

Hey, if I'm the Prez, my FIRST job is Commander-in-Chief. And since I'm most comfortable (and look pretty businesslike) in a wardrobe styled after WWII khakis, I might as well look the part!

Oh, if God forbid I were elected: 1911s and M14s for everyone! Barring violent felons, the dangerous-to-self/others, and those of nonmilitary age...

Hmmm ... if I were President, I'd probably carry a Colt Defender --- but one that had been test-fired by my armorer about 5,000 times ...

... make that 8,000 ...

No way I could be President. This whole place of birth business would keep me out.

However, a US President must carry a 1911. With the Seal set into the grips. Nothing else will do.

In this fantasy-land Perfect America we're discussing, the Prez wouldn't be carrying because he needed to defend himself. He would be carrying as a symbol, as a statement. He's saying, "This is America and we have RKBA!"

Needless little symbols. If We are Caesar We command Legions that will rain death from the sky at Our word. We don't need the pomp or silly little popguns. Should We choose to keep one at hand there are Hulking Minions to carry Our guns around for Us.

It actually increases the glory of the Empire to appear completely unremarkable and understated. Adding a gun makes one look like Pinochet in his gold-embroidered uniform, puffed up and a bit silly. To shore up Caesar's dignity and power with toys tells people that We and by extension the Empire need such support. It undermines the very image We are trying to project.

To show Our support for gun ownership there would be a few carefully selected photo shoots of Us knocking down targets one after the other on a tactical range. Caesar does not need to carry a gun all the time, but everyone still sees His image demonstrating His prowess and love of weaponry; by extension it reinforces the might of the Empire.

Find a few brave armed yeomen who fought off evil criminals of some demographic which does not support Our rule. Give them medals and an audience with their Leader thereby rewarding them and appearing the generous Father of all Americans rather than someone who needs to carry a gun to remind everyone of how dangerous he is. This will also put Our enemies on notice that they can be shot, and the killers will be rewarded.

A proclamation or two on the anniversary of some important gun-related event expressing Manly Pride at how well armed and free the serfs are should round things out.

We would also be shown among visibly armed people from some state which did not vote for Us, pressing the flesh. It would give the gun owners a warm feeling that their President felt confident walking among His peasants and supported the right of opponents to be armed. He has nothing to fear from His loyal citizens. The snipers, company of Marines and helicopter gunships would be discreetly off-camera :)

That's how the iron-fisted ruler of the Free World(tm) shows His support for the RKBA and demonstrates that He just re-read Machiavelli and Castiglione.

I read that Teddy Roosevelt carried and once a gun dropped out of his Tux cumberbund on the foot of the king of Spain.

Orrin Hatch is another (not pres. though) that says he carries some NAA minis.

Why carry - did you see X-Men 2 - when that mutant was about to stab the Pres., if he had a pocket gun, he could have blasted him off.

It would actually detract from my safety and security.
This is the part I don't get. Why does just having a gun on you detract from your safety and security?

Nobody said anything about taking it out and waving it around. I never saw a president or any other political figure do that. Some of them must carry.

There's a good chance it would distract my guards. They know there's a gun. They don't know what I'm doing with it. That's something they're thinking of when they should be concentrating on the external threat.

I'm also more a hindrance than a help under the circumstances. If I've got a gun there's a good chance I'll deploy it in an emergency rather than doing my job which is being scuttled to safety or dog-piled by the Secret Service agents.

In both cases I'm less safe with the gun than without it.

I would carry a Wilson CQC or a P226 .357SIG. I would first make it legal to carry in crime ridden cities like DC, Baltimore, Chicago and New York.
