My wife and I went out to eat last night for dinner. I was CCWing, of course. On the way out of the little shopping center the restaurant was in I saw a sign posted below a stop sign stating that no weapons were permitted on the property. AZ doesn't require specific wording, and signs have force of law. However, what is interesting is that there were no signs visible on the way into the shopping center, and it was only upon leaving that I saw the sign.

I will of course make a mental note for the future that guns are not permitted on the property.

I recommend you contact the entity posting the sign with a complaint -- you can hardly be responsible for obeying a sign that you cannot see on your way in.

I would recommend also you contact others and spread the word -- this is a shopping center to avoid.

I noticed that once in Arizona also.

Instead of entering I turned around and gave another store my business.

We cannot just not patronize a place. We must let our position be known. Be vocal. If they don't know people don't shop there for a reason then they (management) don't know they ran us off. Got to be specific.

At first the response will be "so what".That is until the list gets long enough.

Around here, I believe the posting of a 'no weapons' sign is not legally enough to get you in trouble if you should be carrying. If they notice (shame on you!) and ask you to leave...you must, but that's as far as they can go unless you resist and then they can call the Authorities and make trouble for you. So...right or wrong...I carry even if there are signs saying it's verboten. So far...I haven't had the need to display the fact that I'm not following their sign, and figure if that should happen...the fact that I'm carrying will be much appreciated at least by me and whatever trouble my sign ignoring will be very minor.

I wonder if they're trying to keep everybody happy. The hoplophobes so they can "feel" "safe," and the CCWers so they can effectively and legally ignore the sign.

You think, maybe?

A local mall has a such a sign at its main entrances, but there are none if you enter through one of the anchor stores. Oops ...

Anyway, I got a little chuckle the other day when I saw in the paper that the company that owns the mall had defaulted on almost $50 million in debt, and the property is going into receivership.

Occasionally, a corporate entity may force their local "store-fronts" to post a sign. Occasionally, the person posting isn't necessarily in full agreement and doesn't receive specific instructions as to how or where to post.

Right, let's help them do a better job banning guns.

Like the prostitute with leprosy, things changed when her business fell off.

Unfortunately, we are very bad at making this happen. Either there are not enough of us or we rationalize too much about making this happen. Most of these prostitutes are going to die of old age long before their business falls off.

And be sure to tell them you won't be spending any of your money there.

Wait...signs have force of law in AZ and there is no legal requirement on what the sign needs to be?

I just crossed AZ off my list of top 10 states for gun laws. There's literally no point in being able to legally carry when you never really know if you are breaking the law by carrying somewhere

Lady... Shooter

Do you know anything about Chandler?

I'm on my way too, to either the hills surrounding Chino Valley in Arizona or to Douglas Co. Oregon... I have another five years to go before I may make my residential exit from this formerly-Golden State...

I have a rule & that rule is I do not patronize places of business who do not allow Concealed carry.
That must make it difficult to renew your drivers license or mail a package. But in general I agree with your point.

Once people here figured out the signs don't carry the force of law they have largely gon away from everywhere except for a couple of theatres.

I am not aware of a law prohibiting carry at the DMV in Michigan. Can you link it?

Here that would not be illegal, and in my prior state of IN that would also not be illegal.

The government isn't really a business anyway. Their bottom line and continued existence kind of make that point

That law only applies to places that serve alcohol. All Title 4 laws are related to alcohol.

Title 12 Chapter 31 have to do with weapons and explosives.

Per Handgunlaws.us

Do “No Gun Signs” Have the Force of Law?
“YES”
Arizona does not require any specific wording, size, location or format for No Firearms signs which prohibit the carrying of a firearm on private property. The only requirement is that the signs provide a Reasonable Notice that firearms are prohibited. They do not need a sign if the property owner has someone at the door giving notice to those who enter. If you enter a property that does not have signs and the owner or person in charge of the property ask you to remove the firearm you have to or you can be charged with trespassing

Not surprising. Tucson is becoming to Arizona, what San Francisco & Los Angeles are to California.

Sadly true. Pima County has leaned to the left for decades and after Gabrielle Giffords was shot at a Tucson Safeway the gun grabbing culture keeps growing.

"Mature lady, new shooter", as far as Chandler, AZ it's in the gun friendly east Phoenix metro area. I lived in neighboring Gilbert at one time but haven't been there in a few years however expect it's nothing like Tucson.

Danex71, thanks for pointing that out. I did not realize the link was for alcohol establishments only. Also, even if I did, would have assumed consistency across signage would be required.
