Over the weekend, I flew up to the Chicago area to meet my wife's family. We've only been married about five years, so we figued it was time. She drove up the week before, and I flew up to join her Friday.

Since she had to drive through Maryland, and we weren't sure about the CC laws in the other states she'd be driving through she elected to leave her CCW at home (We do know Maryland's.). Since I flew up, I of course couldn't carry even a pocket knife. (I did correct that as soon as I found a Wal-Mart.)

Her family all knows that we're pro 2A people. So the topic came up quite a bit. I was somewhat surprised to find that all of them were pro-gun, as were a couple of her friends. We had interesting discussions about our gun laws here in Virginia, and theirs. They all pointed out the obvious truths, that the bad guys don't seem to have any trouble getting or carrying guns, and not much is done about it when they're caught. They also said they were definately in the minority.

Since we were driving home, we elected to take the longer, slower route, and drive Rt 30 across to hook up with I-81 in Pennsylvania. During the night we stopped at an overnight gas station, and got to talking to an Ohio State Trooper. A Sgt I believe. The talk turned to guns, what he carried, what we carried, the laws in the different states and so on. He told us he fully supported the right of law abiding citizens to carry. As he said, "The bad guys don't worry about permits or laws. They just carry. Why shouldn't law abiding citizens be able to do the same?"

By the way. I gotta say you folks up in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Western Pennsylvania have got some of the prettiest country I've ever seen. Coming from a die hard "Southern Boy" that's quite a compliment.

I think I'll go back.

just because people are from the north doesnt mean we are all against carrying guns...I am from NYC and I believe that law abiding citizens should have the rights to carry. Unfortunately it took for me to move to texas in order to obtain a gun but if I ever move back to NYC I will raise hell for them to change the rules. We should be able to protect ourselves from people who are able to get guns freely.

Thanks. Southern by birth as well(Knoxville, Tennessee). Relocated to Hoosier territory. Love it here. You are in the minority if you don't own at least 1 firearm.

You married a Yankee ??????????????

Why Son, I just gotta tell you. There is just SOMETHING about them Yankee women. Remember this is the woman, who gave me a XD-9 for Valentines day last year, and a Colt Commander this year. In return she wanted a Ruger MK 2, and a Glock 19. ;)

Yea. There is something about them Yankee women.

just because people are from the north doesnt mean we are all against carrying guns..

I guess I was just surprised to not encounter even one. I admit the sample was releativly small, but I more or less expected at least one.

Don't judge an entire state on what a big city forces upon the whole state. If you want to see some beautiful country, you need to spend time in the New England area. When I say that I mean Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Yes, I'm a yankee and I'm not ashamed of it.

I was born in Chicago, I guess i'd be considered a yankee and i'm pro-gun. I support gun control, I use two hands to shoot my gun.

Howdy from a Virginian displaced in PA. It is indeed very pretty country. And especially in rural PA, a thriving gun culture (the old joke is 'PA is Philly and Pittsburg, seperated by Alabama'). Imagine Roanoke or Giles County, writ large. If they could figure out decent road construction, sweet tea, pecan pie or barbeque, it just might one day be civilized.

Go Hoos!

Some of the best firearms are made by Yankees! I am of course a Red Sox fan.... But still, Bushmaster, Smith & Wesson, Colt, Kahr,Ruger to name but a few!

<---Lives 30 mins outside the city. My membership here and the ISRA are self explanatory :D

I am a Yankee too, (from CT) but I moved to Texas about 10 years ago. The difference gun-wise is night and day. Up there, I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get a gun. Here, I walk in to the store, pay for it, and leave. (The hard part is not turning right around and going back into the store to buy something else :)) I didn't even bother with trying to get a permit. The state is so small, the permit isn't valid if you drive more than two hours and enter another state. (not counting reciprocity)

The irony is that many of the American made guns are made in CT: Ruger, Charter, Colt, the list goes on. CT even has a "gun valley" - where most of the manufacturers are. I HATE Massachusetts with a passion. Its like being in prison going to that state. I hate Mass so much, I won't even buy a Smith & Wesson, since they are based in Mass. :neener:

Even Mass has a few bright spots. Our laws suck , but not as bad as jersey , NY , or California. We are full of socialists and Career Democrats , yes - But in between the universities and cities are farms , Conservatives and Towns that are very free with the LTC's.

I legally own a Romanian AK & a Bushmaster.( Hicap mags for both ), I have a 1911 , a hicap Sig , A hammerless .38 , We are swimming in refurbished Glocks , I am within a 1/2 hour of 2 good ranges , I am an hour from multiple Free States that allow open carry. ...My Colorado In-Laws have to drive over an hour to shoot in their home state. ...

But yes we bear the eternal shame of being home to both Kennedy & Kerry and I offer a full and formal apology. As well as working as hard as possible to un-elect those elitist parasites.

Watch out ... if you have only been married five years then I'm probably old enough to be your dad :p

Guess I shouldn't talk - my wife was actually born in Chicago, though a few years later her family returned to southern Colorado, where she (sorta) finished growing up.

Though I sometimes wonder where I went wrong - I just love to hear Andie McDowell talk ;)

There are a lot of good Americans "up nawth". My family traces its bloodlines back to and through the Revolution (in NY), with some of my ancestors dying in that conflict, and others living - all having fought for the States. I'm quite proud of that.

But it doesn't stop there, either: both my family, and many other families and people throughout the area, are quite proud of their lineage and cling to the foundational principles which led to our Independence.

And, while I may have been born in PA and mostly raised in NY, I spent a similar amount of my youth in VA, and later out here in SD. So I'm intimate with the Confederate mindset as well as the pioneer's (or, at least, what's left of 'em). :p

That Trooper had it right! Criminals don't care or follow laws, so control laws wouldn't hamper them one bit. It would help them. They criminals would be the only ones armed!

+1 for the Trooper!

I have my permit lantern, I seldom leave the state during my routine travels. If I do, I make sure my firearm legally travels on one of my three permits, or it stays home. Just because CT is small, doesn't mean you shouldn't carry here. There are more dangerous people running around here all the time.

Tallpine, I got first dibs on Andie McDowell, and I got age seniority on ya'.:neener:

Cajun, Next time you come up, take the long way. Hop on I-94 to I-196 north to US-31 north and follow up the West Coast of Michigan, cross Big Mac, take US-2 west and find your way south to Chicago. You won't regret it.

Well, you're right. There IS some good country north of the Ohio/Potomac. My corner of Ohio is tolerable but I do regret departing Mississippi. My vote for gorgeous country is a toss-up between middle Tennessee or central Kentucky. --and yes, I've been to all of the CONUS 48. Some kin truly like Alaska. . . . :D
