Just curious, if a weapon is loaded yet in a holster, is it considered "safe" for passing around. Should people be very bothered if the muzzle of that holstered weapon briefly covers them.

In the case of a full sized pistol it's pretty easy to know where the end is and where it's pointing.

For a pocket pistol in a wallet/pocket holster it's a lot more difficult to know exactly where it's pointing since it fits very nicely in the flat of the hand and it's easy to lose track of where it's pointing.

No matter whether it's in a holster in or not, if someone is touching a gun they better not point it at me.

Under your context, no. All guns are always loaded, and never to be pointed at anything that's not intended to be shot.

No. This is not safe to do as it shows others your lack for personal safety. If you're a respected shooter, you are then the example setter, and your actions will rub off on others. So do the right thing and keep them safe. Anyone who is not familiar with your rig .. hands off.

:uhoh:
A loaded weapon should never be "Passed Around" holstered or not! :banghead:

If a weapon is handed over to someone else (passed around) it should be visably cleared prior to passing it to another. An auto should have the slide locked back, a revolver the cylinder opened, or the loading gate opened and the cylinder turned while the other person watches to make sure he is satisfied that it is unloaded. As always the muzzle should never be pointed at anyone - gun cleared or not.

That's the way I see it anyway.

Better idea...just dont pass it around..some idiot will drop the slide if locked back and the I saw Hawaii 5-0 bunch will spin the cylinder if its open and wrist snap the cylinder home. Never hand a firearm to a person that needs to have it locked back or open to be safe, anyone that has a clue will press check or open the action and shut it if you dont first. If not keep the guns in the safe.

If the holster is 1/2" plate steel, then it's safe.

Otherwise, is a muzzle covered with a flap of leather safe? I think not.

OMG!!!! This has to be a first. EVERYONE AGREES ON SOMETHING!!!
Shootcraps, I gotta disagree :D

Whoops - I didn't read the post before voting - I was wrong, inthat no one, but no one, should ever "pass around" a loaded firearm. That's where all the news stories of idiots waxing thier best friends come from.
I voted for my weapon being secure on my side in my holster - more secure than left under a car seat, or on top of a TV cabinet, or even in the safe, because I control it.

Why are you passing the gun around? To show it off? Then the person's going to pull it out, as they can't see the gun while it's in the holster. Then they might just pull the trigger. I'm pretty sure there's been cases where gun is handed over in holster, and the other guy proceeds to remove it from the holster and pull the trigger, sometimes pointed somewhere it shouldn't be, resulting in tragedy.

Nope, not safe. I'll make safe any gun of mine before I pass it around.

Uh, no

There are very few people I'll hand a loaded gun to. I dont recall handing my holster to them as well. I havent really passed anything around since I quit smoking weed, over six years ago, while I was still young and stupid.

Agreed.

NO! The only reason I think to do this is if the zombie horde is coming and I'm handing out rigs to trusted individuals.

Back when I wore a uniform, we had a situation where one person handed out sidearms, in a holster on a belt with spare mags. It was an emergency situation, so in some ways was forgivable. But, I have to agree, you don't pass around a gun in a holster.

That's kind of the thing that bugs me about those shoulder holsters that point the muzzle straight back under your armpit. It just seems sort of sketchy to be "covering" anybody behind you.

*shrug*

As a corollary to that, do any companies make shoulder-concealment rigs that point the muzzle down, or at least cant it at a substantial angle downward?

Galco and Uncle Mike's come to mind.

I dont see holstered weapons, that arent getting passed around for show and tell, as a threat. However, with the shoulder holsters you mentioned, extra care must be taken during drawing and re-holstering to keep from sweeping people on your weak side.

If you sweep me with a weapon, you should expect the same in return. My only decision is whether I will be snapping off the safety and commencing fire on the threat.

It's quite difficult for me to express my feelings without sounding somewhat offensive but I am offended that you would even suggest such an unsafe act. I would be prepared to apoligize for my comments if I felt i was being unreasonable but I don't.

What offends me right now nemesis is that there are currently 19 votes in favor of passing around a loaded firearm in a holster. That's disturbing!

Taurus 66, I am hoping that those who voted Yes did so without reading the opening post :cuss: (ALWAYS read the post before you vote) and are extremely regretful in doing so.

And if not then they are just D***f***s.

Those of you who feel this way:

If you sweep me with a weapon, you should expect the same in return. My only decision is whether I will be snapping off the safety and commencing fire on the threat.

Do not repeat do not volunteer for duty in a combat zone, specifically Operation Iraqi Freedom. You won't last long. You will be sent home with prejudice and most skosh the first time you try to stick a gun in some Colonel's face for 'sweeping' you with his holstered M9. If you live.

Get a life, guys.

Just for the sake of argument,.... In a standard belt holster, are you not sweeping all those people on the floor below you when you are on the second floor??? Piece of 1/2" ply and some carpet isn't going to stop a round. Just my $0.02 cents. :)
