Is Ruger SR9 really an IMPROVED Glock?

The market is moving toward striker-fired, polymer-framed pistols. It would be stupid to ignore that trend. To compete in the LEO/Government market, it's the easiest, and currently, most popular choice.

Ruger took advantage of the trend, and the developments, that Glock is just now beginning to emulate.

As to reliability, Ruger has as good a reputation as Glock. Glock, located overseas, has resisted the type of recall that Ruger, an American company cannot afford. There have been problems with firing pins, connectors, unsupported chambers, sights, and magazines with Glock. They always blamed the ammo, or the operator, while making running changes. So what?

You could say that any polymer pistol is a Glock copy, but that doesn't make it correct.
actually someone who does a little research will find that Glock did not make the first "plastic fantastic".... the first polymer framed handgun was made by HK .... along with polygonal rifling and a couple other key features...

and leo guns are less about striker fired pistols / vs hammer fired... they are more about cost / unit instead....

you will find the agency with the largest budgets predominately carry Sig Sauer, and HK

not Glock or Ruger..

ps i cant help but notice that everyone in here seems to have a positive outlook on 1911's

the HK USP is an IMPROVED 1911....

it has a stronger barrel, its more reliable, its more durable, and its DA/SA (with double strike capability)...

i dont see how glocks, smiths, rugers, or any of these other pistols can say the same thing...

the only thing glock does best is that of its Finish...

if Glock and HK were ever to get together and make an HK with a Glock finish god help the rest of the market...

Ah, the Glock vs. Ruger debate. Well now, my take on the matter. Ruger and Glock specialize in very different things. Glock makes a no-frills military and police pistol that will work at all times, under just about all circumstances.

Ruger makes incredibly strong guns which while not particularly innovative are always cheaper than the competition, and always utterly reliable.

I like both companies, and I like Ruger and Glock pistols. That being said, the SR9 doesn't really compare to Glock. I wouldn't feel bad about toting a Ruger SR9, but a Glock is what I'd choose over it anyday.

Now, Ruger P-90 vs. 1911? Or Ruger P345 vs. Sig Sauer P230? Going with Ruger myself. But then, we are also talking about different guns.

I agree that the only that comes close to upsetting Glock are Springfield XDs, and maybe, maybe S&W M&Ps.

SR9

Would you care to tell us who all these people are that you claim to be spending all this money on up-grades to mimmic the SR9? personally I think you gravely mistaking.

Not to mimic the SR9.

The SR9 simply has many of the features that people upgrade their Glocks to have.

Google CCF(?) Raceframes.
Google Cimollini safety catch.
Look at all the Glocks with the square hook ground round.
Look at all the aftermarket STEEL sights for Glocks.
Look at all the Glocks with the finger grooves ground off.

They're not aping the Ruger. Ruger just found optional features that have endured since the Glock 17 was first introduced.

The SR9 is not an improvement over the Glock. It's a Glock-like pistol with a totally different feel. Some people don't like the trigger. The trigger works and it's reliable.

What I do prefer over the Glocks I own is the grip and the general way the SR9 fits my hand. It just shoots better, not from a mechanical viewpoint, but from an "i'd rather hold this thing while I fire a bullet" viewpoint.

It's a great pistol and for the price, a better value than any comparable Glock. I don't think it's mechanically better in any respect.

Sure you can. It's called an XD. :p
i guess that depends on your improve is... if your definition consists of a inferior product with an inferior finish, that you have to take to a gunsmith to work on or send it back to Springfield then yes

the Xd is an improved glock...

and this is coming from someone who doesn't even like glocks that much...

While I am aware that some of the earlier XD's had rust issues that has been taken care of with the newer ones. I know there are more accessories for Glock but that seems to be changing. Truth be told I would rather own a gun with a history of rust problems than one with a history of blowing up in shooters hands. I also believe the newer Glocks have better chamber support than the earlier ones did. Truth be told I believe they are both good guns & feel everyone should shoot what they like.
As far as the SR-9 goes I wanted one when it first came out because I am a Ruger P-series fan. I still haven't got one. They seem to be doing better now but I have about decided that with a new gun it's a good idea to wait till it's been out for a couple of years before buying one. Kinda like when an automaker comes out with a new model.

"Why, yes, I carry a Glock, right here in my sweat pants." :D

LOL Mc
To those who own the SR-9 & might be interested it has been rumored at rugerforum that GHOST is coming out with a trigger bar upgrade so you can change the trigger pull if you like. I don't know when it will be released though.

Look at Nutnfancy review of the sr9 in the above link "Gunning for the glock". He is a glock fan and still gives the sr9 near glock status.

I have a G17 and I like it, but the SR-9 is just as good as the Glock, if Ruger would have work out all the bugs before push the this gun out the market, the SR-9 would be the hottest seller.

Trigun

The problem with the SR-9 is that if it doesn't break it'll only just have a crappy trigger... A Glock will most likely not break and has a trigger that while not great, might as well be a $4000 custom 1911 when compared to the SR-9... Besides, if you get an SR-9 and it breaks you'll probably just get a Glock, if you get a Glock... it just probaly won't break.

The M&P may be an improvement on the Glock, the SR-9 is still JV team... Feels nice in the hand, but that's not enough.

I hate glock triggers.

Does anyone know if there are aftermarket metal unserrated smooth skinny triggers available for a glock WITHOUT that rediculous trigger safety thing?

Don't know about that, but the two Glocks I own are a 23 and a 27, and on both I swapped out the serrated triggers with smooth triggers, then used a half-round file to make the safety bar match the contour of the trigger face. Tok a couple minutes, vastly better feel.

"the HK USP is an IMPROVED 1911.... "

not even close - different gun, different action, different configuration, bigger size, more weight, different mission profile. How many carry a USP concealed? This pistol doesn't do anything a Ruger P90 couldn't do.

So far, a couple spec op units only use it as an offensive pistol. Other than that, they go to smaller lighter pistols.

Again, apples to oranges comparison.

The XD series is an improvement on the Glock design. I sell police weapons daily, and I can tell you, unless they are required to cary a Glock, I usually have a 70-80% chance of an officer leaving the store with a XD. The XD just fits more peoples hands well, and the trigger is much nicer. Most people fall in love with the gun as soon as they hold it.

I have yet to have a XD come back for repairs. The rust issue was addressed 5-6 years ago with the application of Melonite to all the XD slides beginning with the introduction of the XD45ACP.

I am a Certified Glock Armorer, and I can tell you that I work on too many Glocks, am constantly replacing those damned plastic sights, and change way too many plastic guide rods. Yeah, many will tell you that they like the fact that the Glock is lighter, but they don't realize that comes with a price. Glocks are good guns, but no way are they superior to the XD line. The M&P, I'm still trying to get a grip on it. Not a bad gun, but overcomplicated IMO, and not quite the good feel a XD has.

If I had to carry a duty weapon, it would be a XD first, then probably a Sig or H&K.

I'd probably carry a Ruger before a Glock, only because I shoot Rugers better and I trust it will work when I need it to.

My former department was given some Springfield XD's and they gave them right back when they found out that replacement parts were not available for in house repair. Out of 750 Glocks (G 19) the armorer never replaced a single guide rod or sights. He spent most of his time cleaning out the over lubrication and changing out connectors back to factory spec of 5.5# and writing up discipline reports.

We did find qualification scores went up dramatically when we dumped the S&W 5906's and switched to Glock though!

I prefer the Glock over the Ruger but the Ruger is a nice gun. I am not a big manual safety fan myself.

Actually, the Glock is also more reliable and more durable than the 1911.

But the "DA/SA (with double strike capability)" is NOT an improvement at all IMO.

I would much rather have the Glock's consistent trigger (the same exact trigger pull each and every time, from the very first shot to the very last shot) than any gun with a heavy DA first shot, followed up by light SA shots.

And the double strike feature is really useless in real world shooting.
If my gun doesn't go "bang" when I pull the trigger I'm going to immediately do a stoppage drill and eject that round.
Not waste precious time trying the same possibly defective round again with a second strike.

I have never seem a Ruger cool-aid with this heavy dosage.

If you want a SR9, get a SR9. Don't try to mod a perfectly good pistol to be like something else.
