June Mail in Match for Fellow THR Members

ROTR you are a good guy. I think these matches are great. I am getting out and shooting my guns at least once a month because of this. Without it, I don't know if I would make time.

I agree. I try to get out once a month anyway but these matches are giving me a reason to bring some of the guns out of the back of the safe that I don't use often. Of course this means more cleaning...oh well.

I just looked a little more closely at the target. If you shoot the rhino's FEET, it counts as a hit. If you shoot the rhino's SHADOW, it does not count as a hit.

I just hope to get 8 shots on the paper. I'll probably have to screw the l---o----n----g barrel onto the Dan Wesson for this one.:D

If Photo Guy's situation applies to anyone else, go ahead and shoot twice and discard your standing shots if you happen to get out again to a place where you can shoot prone.

Now if you decide to shoot prone, you must discard your standing shots right? Even if you do better standing. So if you get a 100, don't reshoot! :D

Darn I still need to schedule some shooting time in. I keep forgeting. It is supposed to be in the high 80's tomorrow. Sounds like a fine day to go shooting!

Let me get this right. We are shooting 8 shots at 5 Rhinos - or - are we shooting 8 shots at 8 Rhinos (2 pieces of paper)? Where does it say "no Sling"? I did not see that or is that automatically included as as "aid". Thanks for straightening me out. Quantrill

8 shots at five rhinos. 10 points per hit for a total of 80 points. If you hit all 8 shots, then you get a 20 point bonus for a grand total of 100 points. As far as I was able to gather and from posts above, no aid means no aid, which means no sling. The only thing that should be supporting the rifle is a body part or combination of body parts from only your body. ROTR will correct me if I am wrong. I am taking my wife and we are going to shoot right now.

It is done.

Well went out and shot the match today with the wife (Kellann). Once again, the difference between a perfect score and my score was one shot and it was just to the right just like the poker shoot last month! Oh well. My wife did well.

I did shoot a few slugs at my practice manila folder, then gave it up. I swear I can't hit crap with slugs! If I were shooting at a man size target, I would have to aim at their genitals in order to hit them in the chest or get lucky with a head shot! Yeah it is that bad. So I decided to shoot some #7s I had laying around. I got like 12 pellets on! Then when I got home, I realized there was a reason it seemed so easy to get at least 8 pellets on the rhinos when I shot 8 shells, ooops, I was only supposed to shoot three! I will toss that target, I think I will take my hunting 870 out with the full choke in a couple days and see if I can't get a 100 with it.

I did use a Ruger 10/22 scoped and a stock Swede M96. Here is an interesting picture of how I modified my Swede Mauser's front sight. Everyone knows how high those things shoot at 100 yards. So I cut off a slim piece of target paster and stuck it about 1/16" above the post. It worked pretty good. I aimed right at the center rhino and it was only about 2-3" high instead of about 7-8". I just went for it after that and did ok. I won't post my score or target until the match is over.

You only have eight rounds. 10 points for each shot inside a rhino target (you don't necessarily have to hit the rhino outline, just break a target line). 20 bonus points for hitting all five rhino targets. 100 possible points. The center dot on each rhino is the "X". Tiebreakers determined by "X" hits and then by scoring inside the rings.

ROTR - I was able to get out and shoot this target from prone (and it did help). However I thought I understood the scoring until I went to actually do it. As written above each hit is worth 10 points but there is a 20 point bonus for hitting all five rhinos. The only way I see to get the max of 100 points is to hit all five AND not have any misses. That would mean a target with five hits on five rhinos but three misses would get 70 points.
Am I interpreting this correctly?

BTW - will you accept scans or jpg images as valid entries?

That would mean a target with five hits on five rhinos but three misses would get 70 points.

5 Rhino Hits = 50 points
+ Bonus for hitting all 5 rhinos = 20 points

Total = 70 Points

Correct!

Yes! Scanned images are acceptable. e-mail to [email protected].

Actually, the easiest way for me is if you post your score and target right here on THR - unless of course our hosts would rather keep scanned target images off of their bandwidth.

Sorry shooters, but I will not be able to score this month's target until July 8th. I did not make it to the post office this morning and I am heading out of town for a week's vacation.

I apologize for any inconvenience. I'm hoping you are all out enjoying some Independance Day time off also. God Bless the USA!

This month's participation has been fairly light, so I will extend the shooting until Sunday July 7th. If you get out and shoot, post your class, score, weapon and caliber here on this thread (we're under the honor system here!) and I will include it in this month's total.

Shot my target this morning with my Mosin Nagant. Warning: Shooting that sucker prone HURTS! I tried the first 4 shots prone and the second 4 from a seated position. I did better seated. Finished with 6 hits on 5 Rinos. Scored it as 80 in the stock Rifle class. I hope to take a shot (no pun intended) at it with a pistol before time runs out. So far this was the best month's target. very challenging to have to hit 5 separate spots on the paper.

Scott

I didn't think of it that way! Darn! When I missed that 5th rhino on my like 4th shot, I just thought I had blown it. With this extension does that mean all of our old scores are invalid??? :scrutiny: I am sure the odds of that happening are as good as my odds of getting you guys to finally accept that my CCW rig was that over 6" barrel Garand pistol from last month.

El Rojo,
I hope my post wasn't confusing. I scored 6/8 hits. I hit all 5 Rino's once and one of them twice, that's 60 points for the hits and the 20 bonus for hitting all 5 Rinos.

Anyway I intend to try to shoot the target again with my Witness 45ACP if I can make the time and maybe with the Mossberg if my shoulder recovers from the pounding the Mosin gave it shooting prone (LOL).

Scott

No I understood. I was thinking the bonus only applied when you had all hits on. A simple misunderstanding, however, I will deal with it. I still have the 870, full choke, and some 7 1/2s that I can try and go get that 100 with sometime today or tomorrrow. Actually, all the way until the 7th. It is all good.

I shot a couple of targets this morning, June 30.

In handgun class I shot a Ruger Redhawk .41 Magnum. Its a blued gun with a five and a half inch barrel.
I got a score of 30. Two hits on the middle rhino and one on the top right hand rhino. The rest were off the paper, one high, the rest low or low and left. I shot with two hands from standng and used single action.

In shotgun class I used my Dad's old 12 gauge Winchester Model 12 dating from the 1930s. I shot from standing and used Remington Game Loads with six shot and got a score of 80, hitting four of the five rhinos. I patterned this shotgun for turkey several years ago with these shells and expected better results.

this month's lame excuses for not shooting the match,,,

1. too much rain and too little time

2. i was going to shoot at least an open sight rifle sunday and email it but found out the hard way that the range closes at 3 on sunday in the summer, got there at like 2, i was just gettin tuned in and i hadda pack it up. :banghead:

i may still shoot it just for giggles next weekend if i get the chance

i kinda want to try the shotgun too but then i'll have to clean it

good luck all!

;)

ohhh, just noticed the extension, will i make it on the 7th???

the pressure is on...:what:

:D

I checked in here to see who had won and - Extension?! Good! Like 280plus said, the rain was attrocious in June (and May, and April). And I was out of the country for more than half the month - honest! :)

Now let's all get out and try to shoot those evil Rhinos!

Shot my Rhinos today. 97 degrees out there. Shot two classes

Scoped Class ............ 30 ........ Scoped .22 rifle

Pistol Class .............. 20 ............... .22 semi auto pistol

Thanks for the extension and thanks for doing all the work to make these possible.

Robert J. McElwain

I was hoping to make it out to the range again this weekend and try the shotgun class on this target but the weather is not going to let that happen.

Therefore, here are my scores, such as they are:

Scoped Class (scoped rifle - Ruger 10/22, prone) Score = 80pts

Pistol Class (Brolin .45 1911a1, 2-hand unsupported) Score = 10pts

This 1911 is shooting off to the left a bit at this range, only one shot hit a rhino but five were on the target.

Thanks for running to contest ROTR!

Darn it! I went and shot my shotgun target with the Remington 870 and a full choke. I pretty much figured after looking at it in the field that I got the 8 hits. Well I get home and I am double checking it and the three pellets that I thought broke the line didn't!!! Darn it!!! I got a 90/100-0X! Darn darn darn darn. :banghead: It would have been real easy to say I got it, but this is the honor system. Oh well. A 90/100 should bring up my average. ROTR I will e-mail you the target.

So ROTR

El Rojo
Shotgun Class
7/7/03
Remington 870
Score 90/100-0X

June Results

Rifle Class - With 80 points Deputy Vaughn wins the iron sites rifle category hitting all five rhinos but scoring two fliers - 1/2 from the prone position and 1/2 from seated.

Scoped Class - Quantrill gets a perfect 100 to win the Scoped class - all inside the rings! (Quantrill -- you don't have to waste your $$$ overnighting your target -- very nice shooting, but you can just post your score on THR)

Pistol (or "Lucky") Class -- ACP230 and ROTR tie for 3 hits and 30 points before being trampled by the remaining rhinos. ACP230 shot standing while ROTR learned how to shoot pistol from the prone position. ROTR was trampled while trying to get out of the prone position, ACP230 was able to run, so he was sweaty and tired when trampled.

Shotgun - Your virtual rangemaster ROTR scores a 100 with the turkey gun from the sitting position. Now I just need a turkey to wander within 50 yards of the Mossberg while I'm awake.

Nice shooting on a challenging target everyone! That whole piece of paper was smaller than my GP100 front site at 50 yards and those red and gray rhinos don't exactly stand out.
