I hear all the time about guns that are stolen so I've decided to try and safeguard mine as much as possible. I purchased a large and heavy safe that is now bolted in place. I also decided to take a Polaroid of each gun and record serial numbers. I keep this info. in a safe place that is not in my hime. Is there anything else I could do?

Ask the police department to check out your house and make suggestions concerning additional security. Perhaps trimming some bushes that might provide an intruder with cover might help. Maybe better lighting or door/window locks might be a good idea. Various kinds of alarms - some expensive, some not might be installed. You've made a good start, now just keep going.

Trip wires, land mines, guard dogs, that cool laser thingy from Resident Evil (the movie), silent alarms, not-so-silent alarms, gun wielding robots...

Burglar alarm with internal motion sensor which cannot be easily defeated by cutting a wire outside your house. Protection from thieves is all about time. The safe costs them time and the alarm makes sure they don't have much time.
You're right, cutting the phone lines and wires to siren (outside) before entering. Smashing panel with batter backup inside works too. Why rush?

A large, furry four-legged roving security guard with sharp teeth is a good deterent to would-be thieves. A small , furry, four-legged walking alarm system is not quite as good, but does offer some deterent.

I have 2 dogs as well. An eighty pound Lab Mix and a Sixty pound Lab Mix. Although they aren't mean they do have a mean bark and are both pretty good size.
Good suggestions...and some light-hearted jokes aside...keep in mind that security is much more effective if is is composed of multiple layers.
Get a BIG heavy gun safe, bolt it to the floor and fill it with led pips. They will expend all their energy lugging off your safe and wont get anything else.
Disassemble all but your HD guns and keep the parts in different places.
Leave a radio playing.
Have your alarm installer run a dummy line, that if cut will set off alarm.
Get a doghouse, even if you don’t have a dog.

hide the safe in the floorboards of a closet or something(shag carpet will fill in the gaps)behind a credenza or work bench(hinged panel)motion lights(sears,radio shack,ect)thorney shrubs around windows.noise and lights are what keeps the baddies away.this draws attention and they dont want attention.
Remember; What people don't now about(and can't find) they won't steal. I put the safe inside a vault room i had built in the basement and then put up a false wall in front of that. A friend that helped install the safe could not find the door after it was done.

Besides several safes bolted in place, I also have one of these........
But of course that was last fall when he was still a puppy (29", 130 lb.). He's a little bigger now (32", 180 lb.), yet still has a ways to go. Oh, and the Rottie watches his back.

Security screen doors over outside doors.
Keyed locks on any windows that open.
The idea is harden the outside of the house. Most badguys enter through doorways, or open windows. Breaking windows is noisy and dangerous.
Possibly add a deadbolt to the doors into the room where the safe is.
Lock it all up when you leave the house.

This "safe talk" reminded me of a funny thing that happened last week. The guys came to deliver my *new safe. I have two front steps to get up before my front door. My dogs DID NOT UNDERSTAND that these guys were coming in. They thought, Hey! These guys are STEALING OUR STUFF!!
It was VERY difficult to convince them otherwise. One deivery man got the bright idea to try and stick his hand INSIDE the door to pet my Dalmatian (my smallest dog) and make friends. I shouted, NOOOOOOooooo!!!!!! He jerked his hand away about a sixteenth of an inch before those BIG teeth clamped down. It was touch and go there for a few minutes. My big dog weighs about 130 and I simply couldn't get her away from the door very quickly. I had to explain (with talk) and calm them down. The big dog and the Dalmatian. GOOOoooood guard dogs. Plus, they would would give my wife PLENTY of time to get to her 12ga double barrel if the need arose. She wouldn't even have to hurry!

This the second house that I was able to hid a safe in the basement the first was just in a recess behind a wall but it worked so I actually built the room in the current house around the safe... BG can't carry it off because it won't fit thru the door.

Shouldn't this thread be about keeping thieves away from guns ??
I mean, how many of you have trouble with your guns sneaking out at night and meeting up with some thief in the alley, backyard, or treehouse ...?
My guns are better behaved than that.

Neither of these are true with a quality system. If you're gonna get a real system instead of a cheap deterrent radio shack special, think 'Radionics'. Consider the cell backup comm package, seek the installers input on placing the CPU for maximum protection.
Any quality system has the CPU housed seperately from the panel, in an armored box. Cell phone backups have really dropped in price over the past few years, and there are several ways around the "cut the wires to the siren" thing that I won't discuss here.
