Lack of Respect for the 10mm

Thats nice
nobody makes ammo, what there is, is very expensive
there is the whole 'club' mentality,

the 10mm 'nuclear explosion'
is right up there with the .45's 'it'll take your head plum off' or knockdownpower....

and that's part of why I don't own 10mm or .45
haven't found a need they filled that I didn't like something else better.

10mm

In the state of Alabama 10MM is the only other caliber besides .44 Magnum deemed sufficiently powerful enough to hunt with legally in a handgun, that being said, its a niche caliber that has its following, hence the recent reintroduction of the Colt Delta Elite in 10MM, as far as I am aware there are only about a half dozen companies making guns in 10MM, ammo is no where near as easy to find or as "cheap" as 9MM, .40 cal, etc, but people still like it and still shoot it, there is a demand for these guns, just not much of one.

Hi,
I think that the 10mm is catching back some renewed interest. The reason is that many people realize it is a very serious round to consider though in the beginning it was considered too much, including for the FBI and in favor of the .40S&W that became more manageable for the average folks.
Nobody should show lack of respect for any caliber being shot by a well trained shooter. Those who do, do not know what they are talking about.
If you feel comfortable with the 10mm then it is the best caliber in the world "for you" and that's what it matters.
I have seen many discussions about 9mm vs 40cal, AK vs AR, yours vs mine with arbitrary arguments that lead nowhere.

Shoot often, get good at it, be safe and feel good about it.

Cheers,
E.

I use to have a Delta Elite. Great Pistol!!!! But all you could do within reason was the 10mm.

With the 20 one can do the 9x25 Dillon, the wuzzy .40, (FBI limp wristing gubbers), .357 Sig, .45 acp. Am I missing any? One can shoot several barrel lengths, compensator's or cans if you would like. But the two biggy's are 10mm and the 9x25. Both very good rounds in my opinion. And can be shot with authority in the hands of a good shooter.

And for the folks that say or claim they can't shoot 10mm fast and on target. I was at our local little range one day. First day out since I got rear ended in my Mazda3 by some cell phone queen in a GMC SUV. I was still beat up pretty bad and could not shot worth a darn. A older gent pulls up, sets up and starts shooting at 3" stickies at 15 yards with a XDM .45 full size. I watch him and offer a hand clap after a few mags. He was out shooting me and my Tuned M&P .45 bad. He was not happy with how he was shooting. He then mentioned he was a reserve leo in a neighboring county. And that he was practicing for his up coming qual's. I ask him his age. He sheepishly admitted to 70 years old. And he only got into law enforcement after he had retired. After a while he muttered the F word and pulled out a Glock 20, loaded it with Double Taps and proceeded to blow out his target as fast as he could load mags. After 4 mags he said " I wish the dept. would let me holster this jewel on duty ". He then ran another 4 mags through it with his own reloads at 25 yards with a huge grin and went back to practicing for his qual's with the XDM.

If a 70 year old man can shoot a Glock 20 with full house rounds and visible arthritis in his hands. Just about anybody should beable to rack slide and hit fast with one. :)

psyshack,
very nice event. thanks for sharing. That's why everyone should shoot what they feel comfortable with. Good training, conditioning and very good placement is far more important than anything else.
I love 357SIG 80gr solid HP coppers moving at 2000 fps.
I personally like them all, 9mm, 40cal, 10mm, .357magnum, etc...

1stmarine

One can get 2000 fps out of a 10mm or a tad better with a 90gn bullet. And a well setup 9x25 dillon will best both of them up to 125gn in fps. Makes the .357 Sig look like a .40 S&W compared to a 10mm.

I prefer the heavier bullet option in 10mm flirting with 41 mag ballistics.

The old LEO dude was a far better shot than the young LEO one of my daughters is about to marry I'm so pissed off about.

Another problem with the 10mm is the choice of platforms.

First they are all big guns. and most are expensive 1911's - and not everyone is a 1911 fan (and I know plenty of 1911 fans who wouldn't want a 10mm 1911 if it was given to them) or wants a single action gun. Also not everyone wants to pay the big bucks that these guns are priced at.

Only Glock and EAA have guns at reasonable price points. Even the Delta elite is $800 and up usually. The rest are 1K and up...limits appeal for many. Add in the hard to find, often expensive and mostly watered down factory ammo and the round has even less appeal to the vast majority of shooters.

The 10mm is a round that begs for reloading and as a moderate sized critter gun in automatic it is hard to beat, especially the Glock for backpacking.

At one time back in the day I had both glocks, the SW 1006, 1076 and 1066, the Star Megastar (what a beast) and a Bren Ten special forces Dark, I even carried the G29 and the 1066 as my EDC. I was a huge proponent of the 10mm but several things detered the round from being what many hoped it would be and after the FBI ditched the 1076 - interest waned and currently no government agency (except the Danish army which issues them for polar bear protection in greenland patrols) issues the 10mm. (some may authorize it but that is not the same, thus gunmakers seem to have little incentive to make new 10mm guns.

I have moved on from the 10mm as other guns offer many advantages over the 10mm. If I lived say in alaska or some western states I would still have a 10mm, but in Florida the 10mm serves no real purpose for me.

None of the major ammo makers make their police oriented ammo line in 10mm (Ranger, HST, Gold Dot etc...) when they do then I will believe its catching on again. Didn't Dan Wesson drop most of the 10mm guns from its line? Not exactly a positive sign. And after the Vltor "New" Bren Ten (Fortis) debacle I have my doubts.

The 10mm is most attractive to the reloader due to availability and pricing. I can generally only find 10mm American Eagle plinkers at one place in town and they are loaded exactly at .40 power levels. That's fine, it's preloaded reloading brass and I've never had an issue with their Federal cases splitting on hot reloadings.

I cannot say this of full house loads of Double Tap and Reeds, who use Starline. I've had several Starlines split on their first reloading. Either Starline brass is effected from the high power impulse of the full house load or the Federal brass is simply better.

OregonJohnny hit it! If one other large manfacture would chamber the 10mm I think more people would look at it. I strongly strongly considered it for a long time, but Glocks just dont feel right to me, EAA has had a long list of problems- that kinda scared me off and that only leaves the $$$ 1911s.

Also I dont currently shoot .40, so I would have to stock all new components. For someone who already shoots the .40 though, it seems very logical to also have the 10mm.

Perhaps someday Ill still get one somewhere- but I just dont see it in the imediate future. Actually something Ive often dreamed about is a SBR AR chambered in 10mm- now that could be fun. Olympic 10mm upper

I like my Glock 29sf a lot. Its a pretty compact, accurate, and reliable handgun that shoots a pretty big fast bullet. The downside is cost of factory ammo. It was the gun that forced me kicking and screaming into reloading. I can shoot the thing with minimal expense now.

LOL - I respect the 10mm enough to have built a G20T (long slide) and just picked up a Dan Wesson PointMan 10mm.

I'm sort of an "old school" 10mm fan. By that I mean I am perfectly satisfied with the performance Jeff Cooper wanted when he pushed the idea of the Bren Ten, that being a 200g bullet @ 1000 fps. You can't do that with a 10mm Kurtz (40 S&W) and the pressure is way down, meaning less strain on the brass and wear/abuse on the gun. And, for an added bonus it is as controllable as the 45 ACP.

I don't need to impress anyone at the shooting range, just enjoy loading and shooting something different and very effective.

YMMV,
Dave

Most of the 10mm gun owners I know have abandoned it for several reasons. It really does not fit a NEED notch in handgun calibers, sort of like an Edsel car. The ammo IS EXPENSIVE and getting harder to find. The improvement in compared ballistics is not that significant. The recoil and concussion blast, as well as the night-time FIREBALL effect are not conducive to follow-up shots or accuracy. For police work it is NOT the best choice. Many folks do not shoot it well, particularly novice trainees.

I prefer .45's or any caliber that can be shot accurately even under stress. The 10mm is falling out of acceptance in law enforcement nation-wide for the reasons stated.

10mm is awesome. Maybe if we had more carbines available in this caliber it would be more popular. I think it could really shine there.

The Glock 29 isn't too large to carry comfortably:

The DW Razorback is a tad bigger and heavier, but it is great fun to shoot:

And if you're a wheelgun guy, try the S&W 610:

The 10mm is a great round. However, I don't have much need for a 10mm.

I think the one thing lacking for the 10mm is a popular signature gun that is synonymous with the 10mm cartridge.

This is quite true, there is not a signature 10mm gun.

Really the only gun in history that most (non 10mm fans) gun owners associate directly with the caliber is the Bren ten and mostly because of the failure of the company and ultimately the gun itself. Or because of Miami vice ;). The Delta elite, thanks to the Colt reintroduction after many years, might be the oldest 10mm in production with the Glock 20 being the longest produced gun with no breaks.

To me the best 10mm I owned were the 3rd gen smith 10 series guns (particually the 1006 and 1066) but they were not super popular when introduced and have only become more popular as time has progressed (in all calibers) however there really weren't that many 10 series produced. At the time I remember lots of negative things about the gen 1-3 semi autos from Smith but not so much today.

Most of the 10mm gun owners I know have abandoned it for several reasons

Count me in this list. I love the 10mm rd, and really like the G20 SF that I sold a few days back. At the end of the day, I found myself getting upset if I shot 100 rds and couldn't find all 100 pieces of brass. I think I became obsessed with trying to keep all my brass..........I wasn't having as much fun with the rd as I use to.

If money was no object, I would have never gotten rid of it. I used the money to order a new Browning HP. I need to shoot all of the guns I own, and shoot them a lot.
Getting all worked up over lost brass isn't good (at least for me).

Maybe someday when I don't have little ones to feed and college funds to build-up, I'll get back in to it. For now my .357 Mags will have to do for a 180 gr bullet doing 1300 fps.

I have been reading up on the 10MM for awhile now and I know I am reviving this older thread. I am interested in an auto that is a viable hunting /woods gun. I am basically a revolver fan and load all my ammo for hunting purposes, but I just puchased a Glock 20 and I have to say I really like the power and shootability of this gun. I'm now in the process of trickin this gun out for hunting purposes with the wolf barrell and some adjustable sights. I like the idea for a woods gun with the power and the capacity its a no brainer for me.

Nothing against the 10mm but I rate it's fanboiz right up there with Block & 1911 fans. Some (not all) get to be really annoying.

And for some reason with the 10mm crowd it always seems to come down to unit size...:uhoh:

I have a Glock model 21 45 acp... Have a 10mm barrel and 10mm mag....

Changed the extractor, perfect for both rounds...:)
