Lack of Respect for the 10mm

I have a Glock model 21 45 acp... Have a 10mm barrel and 10mm mag....

Changed the extractor, perfect for both rounds...

Interesting. I'm guessing a .40 barrel is also available? I have a ton of .40 "incidental bycatch" brass from policing my .45 and I don't even own a .40 handgun.

I'm not a fan of "conversion" kits or multi caliber guns but having something to mess around with 10mm and .40 sounds like it might have merit in this case.

The 10mm interests me very much. Alas, none of the current production guns interest me at all. If S&W would re-introduce their 10-series of 3rd generation guns or_better yet_market a 10mm M&P, I'd be running to the gun store with cash in hand.

Patrol the consignment cases. Occasionally a 1006 or 1911 type 10mm shows up. Passed on a 1006 a couple months ago at $800. Like .44 Mag wheelguns, most of these aren't going to have a whole lot of rounds through 'em.

Fishslayer...

I also have a 400 Corbon barrel I use in the M 21:) No 40 S&W in the 21 though...
Might be one available from Wolf barrels:scrutiny:

My Glock M 22 is a 40, I have a 357 SIG barrel for it:uhoh:

:D

My main shooting pistol for.many years was a S&W 10mm. I loved the thing and still regret ever trading it!. However, I do plan to remedy this loss in the future one of these days with the Colt Delta Elite. Used to use what was then Hercules blue dot ... think reliant now? .... extremely accurate & enjoyable pistol in my opinion . Got my eye on that Delta!, wallet isn't cooperative at the moment though!

Max Avg. Po (transducer) 37,500 psi.....MUCHO LOCO!

The safe only has two 10mms right now. This one is a long slide "Practical/Tactical". Think of the G35 but bigger.

LWD slide (NP3'd) with a Storm Lake 5.3" barrel on a G20SF frame.

Just recently added this Dan Wesson. It's an early PointMan 10 in carbon steel.

After the third outing the rear sight cross pin shattered (broke in 3 pieces) so I sent the slide back to DW. They just installed a low mount BoMar style rear sight and the slide is in the mail back to me as I type this. Should be here Monday. (smiley face goes here)

Am on the look-out for other 10mms, like one of the DAO Smiths or even better one of the rare 610 revolvers with the 5" barrel.

davet, there's a used delta elite up in prescott going for 800 and change.

Fishslayer: Used a pretty tight taper crimp..... no problems, was careful though keeping possible increased pressures in mind. The Hercules blue dot was very accurate, but after blue dot changed hands I noticed quite diff. grouping... maybe it was just a psychological thing on my part but my groups definitely opened up some.

I picked up a LNIB 1076, 5 mags and a holster for 800 bucks on Gunbroker about a month ago.. Wow, why did Smith stop making this little tank?

Well at the time they didn't sell that well, then when the FBI dropped the 1076 that was that for Smith.

The letter below shosw just how few they actually made.

Make sure your 1076 has the dimples in the frame below the decocker. When you decock the lever you should see them. If not the gun needs its upgrade to the decocker. Some say they were done without the dimples so you might call Smith and ask if yours has been done.

My opinion is that the 10MM is the best all-round combat handgun. I don't shoot or own a 9MM because I see no need for it. I don't care if our military or any military uses it. If you need more than a very compact .380 then I choose to go right to the 40 or 45 auto.

I am not attacking any other platform just giving my preference for side arm protection. Oh, I do reload because I shoot about 600 rounds per month. For me reloading is part of the handgun sport. Take care guys.

To any of y'all complaining about ammo availability, there are at least 5 websites that I can think of off the top of my head that will deliver it to your house by Wednesday if you order it today. Anyone with internet access has no business complaining about availability. Find a good deal, buy a load of it and you are set.

There is no lack of disrespect for the 10mm at all, just lack of sales. Gun manufacturing is a business and when the average handgun buyer walks in a store they are looking for 9/40/45 because it's what they know. The average customer is thinking, "Cops carry those so they must be good, right?" So it makes sense that the manufacturer's greatest effort is directed at those calibers. If the manufacturer can make additional money on a fringe/niche caliber, it will take a chance at it, but they are not going to roll out several different models in a caliber that won't take lion's share of gun sales. The reason the 10mm has the sales and production guns it has now is because of it's sliver of adoption at the FBI. Without that, it would be like the 44 auto mag - basically custom order guns.

I'm interested in 10mm, and I have a 1006 (or other variation) and a Glock 20 on my long-term list, but I'm not getting into it until I start reloading. Between the prices of loaded ammo and the mixed reviews on factory loads for the round, I'll wait until I can make my own. Pretty much the same story for .45LC, too.

I think the 10mm has a place as a bush gun. I have two, S&W 610 with a 6 inch barrel and a S&W 610-3 with a 4 inch barrel. I'm a reloader, so not worried much about getting loads...but getting brass was an issue. I ended up getting 500 rounds of BVAC 10mm for $190 at a gun show. Might get another 500 and that will set me up. I already load 40S&W and my Dillon can do both with a die adjustment (and leaving in the large pistol primer assy). Both of my daughters shoot it just fine. My eldest daughter (who is not big), loves the 6 inch 610. She was shooting 1 inch groups with it. I can plink with 40S&W (just need to keep the cylinder chambers clean) and then load it with hot 10mm for bush work.

No lack of respect, just a lack of need. I can accomplish what I want in two calibers:

.380 for pocket carry
Something larger and more ubiquitous for belt carry (9x19, .40, or .45 for semi auto).

10mm, 357 SIG, .400 Corbon, .45 GAP, and other boutique calibers just aren't desirable to me. However for someone who embraces and uses them, well cheers! I don't think they are inferior or hold any disrespect for them. I just don't care much for the price and hassle of obtaining them. Personal preference, nothing more.

But to each his own :)

A cartridge that demands respect ...

I like to think of the 10mm as a harsh but pleasing mistress - the kind of cartridge which demands your respect and which you have to earn the right to enjoy. ;)

But once that relationship is reciprocal, there's no looking back.

I'm a little skeptical of 1275fps/200gr FMJ bullet. Anyone loading something like that? I believe it is possible with a hardcast lead bullet, but the poster above is a little misleading. If you are loading to those specs, I'd sure like to know how you are doing it.

I love my 10mm. Unfortunately, there are no good SD loads for it. None of the excellent performing modern JHPs are designed to perform at those velocities. No HST, no Gold Dot (that works well at anything above .40S&W velocities), no Ranger.

The Winchester Silvertip is about all there is, and that is a 25 year old design. Until there are bullets designed to take advantage of the 10mm's ballistic superiority, then mine will be relegated to "range toy" or woods gun status.
