hey! that was cool cool cool!Dont hesitate to send more vids or pics,I enjoy it alot.

I echo the request for more videos. And the thanks given to all you GIs.

As far as excuses for "trigger time" as the Gunny says on Mail Call (how come no big awards for that great show???), my brother can top most of them.

He was a US guard at Panmunjom (the meeting place between N. and S. Korea), as a part of the specially chosen unit that is taller than all the starving North Korean guards. Guess who wins the stare-down contests.

Way long ago, the enemy started firing and he heard arty shells going overhead toward some part of the DMZ. See, the other job was to be the briefly living tripwire that would tell the rest of the world that N Korea was coming south again. And this time was more serious than most such events.

The ammo stores were opened, sealed cases were opened, grenades went into pockets, belted MG ammo went everywhere under staggering gunners etc. They really thought the battle was upon them. Then the word came that the situation was cooled down.

And the word was also that all that distributed ammo was too messy to have around. Can't put it back since there is no place on the forms for that, we'll just order up more sealed cases from the rear-with-the gear guys. And go shoot it all up.

So he soon drove a full truck to a range area and they did a huge amount of shooting.

About that M240

Was that a sight rail on the receiver? It seemed to vibrate around a noticably amount. Would that cause problems using any sighting system on that rail?

Who agrees the 240 (GPMG) is a fine design, but after all, it is a highly evolved Browning BAR.

I joined the army to protect americans, and I'm not doing that here.

For more than twelve years, we watched Saddam flip the bird to the UN, resolution after resolution. He fired missles at our pilots, financed Palestinian suicide bombers, ran terrorist training camps, played games with the weapons inspectors and pursued his WMD research.

The whole world is safer with him gone, thanks to you guys in Iraq.

thanks in a different way

Ok so I understand the point about being thanked although I still feel the requirement to thank you guys. I am a national field rep for College republicans and spend most of my days recruiting Republicans at liberal college campuses. Often when its slow I walk over to whatever Branch is recruiting on campus that day and talk with the the Millitary Recruiters. They also claim that they are not "defending freedom" much of the time. But honestly every piece of the chain is vital. I can honestly say that without you guys I would not be able to do what I do. But seriously great video more would be awsome, so dumb question that maybe one of the servicemen can asnwer. Is it OK to put out video of the base?

I hated the 240B at first. They took the damn coax that I remember jamming up all the time, dressed it in plastic and told me to carry the sucker around instead of the M60. Oh my achin back. The thing was heavier and longer than the pig. It weighs around 30 lbs. unloaded and is about 50 inches long. After traveling via LPC (Leather Personnel Carriers aka boots) for awhile the 240 is like a mother-in-law. A huge pain in the neck.

Then I shot it. Laying in the prone behind it, it felt more solid and comfortable than the pig did. It was deffinately designed to shoot rather than to carry. I hear stories all the time about how guys would almost have an orgasm in their pants when the 60s were rockin, but the pig is nothing compared to the 40. The thing was quite abit louder with a much deeper report and at about 900 RPM it was damn intimidating.

When we got to Iraq, the only carrying was to and from hummers, so I was spared my achin back and left with nothing but LUV for the 240. There were no occurances of jams, but there was a cook off once. Basically as with any weapon if you treat is with respect and take care of it, it will treat you with respect and take care of you. As I used to say, " Keep your weapon ready to rock, and it will rock any time you are ready!"

Is it OK to put out video of the base?

Generally it is a very very bad idea to put out video of bases. The UCMJ would ram its rod of justice quite far up your brown eye for doing the act. The footage of the base in the video from this thread, however, gives no valuable views of any of the defenses of the post. The wire, burm, and desert standoff is standard defensive posture used in outposts througout the theatre.

Good observation. That is indeed a rail mount on the feed tray cover. Several different optics can be mounted on the weapon. The ELCAN is the most common. It has a 3 or 4x magnification I can't quite remember. It might even be inbetween like a 3.5X or something. The PVS-4 is also common. There is a thermal sight as well, but the thing is huge and cumbersome looking, though I've never used one. It might seem like vibrating would cause a problem with a sight, but it doesn't. It is quite easy to keep a sight picture on your target using the ELCAN and PVS-4.

Well, someone decided to implement a weapons cleaning "schedule," instead of trusting me to ensure my guys took care of their gear. Today is the day.

Heh. Reminds me of the time way back when, when our XO, a 2LT, decided to implement "motor stables" to improve the cleanliness of our sedans. So every Friday at 4:30, there we stand, beside our vehicles with the hoods up. About the third week, he stopped at mine, pulled the dipstick out, and asked, "Mr. Griffiths, when was the last time you checked the oil in this car?" Knowing it was full, I replied "Oh, I don't know. It's been quite awhile." He then asked "Why don't you check it more often?" My response: "I've got a second lieutenant that does it for me every week!" He threw down the dipstick, turned on his heel, and marched back into the building. That's the last time we heard anything about motor stables.

Does the 240 fire from an open or closed bolt?

The Wikipedia has your answer: Open bolt.

The 240's a gorgeous machinegun. Personally, I love the M1919 (heavy beastly thing that it is), but the 240s got all the perks of the 1919 (simple mechanism, durable, reliable as the sun, easy to maintain) with a couple extras (quick-change barrel, adjustable ROF, provision for some degree of optics, lighter, more mobile, more readily adapted between vehicular and dismounted use, and the ability to be carried and effectively fired by one man on the move).

I wish there were affordable semi-auto clones of it, and a good crankfire adapter. I'm still waiting for my 1919 crankfire adapter. That'll be fun when it comes in. :)

The L1A1s I used (Browning .50 cals) had optics fitted. They had SUSATs on a sort of special backwards cantilever mount, so it can be done.

the ELCAN is a cool optic, but to be honest with you, it's a pain to use from a vehicle when you're doing our mission (we don't always stick to the roads.)

So now we just shoot it without the optic. We did mount a PEQ-2 to it, though, for night use. Makes things a tad easier, and the IR floodlight is a great feature.

The video won't get me in trouble for opsec, but I'm sure they'd whine if they saw us shooting without full protective gear. The other day they whined because one of our guys was caught with his pants not bloused into his boots.

True story... we discovered some spikes in the road. The bad guys had drilled holes into the road, and dropped sharpened pieces of rebar into em. We had never actually SEEN these before, only heard about em, so we took pictures for headquarters. Their response was not "Good job guys", but a thorough ass chewing because one guy didn't have his damn kneepads on.

Kneepads, are great for some. But when you're 6'6" and riding in a HMMWV, it's kinda ridiculous.

Anyways, i think we're gonna have a Mk 19 shoot at some point, and if so, i'll post up that one as well.
