Hi all,

I am looking to make my second pistol purchase. I currently have a Colt WWI (01911) reproduction and I could not be happier with it.

I am looking for something that will shoot less expensive ammo. I will use it at the range (CCW is not an option where I live). Therefore, it should be rather accurate. No need for bullseye accuracy - but it should be better than combat accurate so I can keep pushing my marksmanship.

I have held a few double-stack 9mm's, and honestly I don't think they fit me well. I have held the larger Sig's, H&K USP's to bring me to this conclusion. I am happy with the 1911 fit, although I think about getting thin grips to try out.

Also - cost is somewhat of an issue. I want to keep it ~500 or less, but will stretch for the right pistol (such as the HK at 600 - 675).

Here is my short list:

Sig P6 - I hear these are slim pistols, and can be found in excellent shape for < $400. I have not heard any accuracy complaints, although I hear DA is heavy - but one can bypass that at the range.

H&K P7 - I like the way this looks, and I hear it is very accurate. My typical range session is 100 rounds over 1 hour - so I am very concerned about the heat issue.

Walther P1 / P38 - Very interesting history, and very inexpensive. I don't know about the accuracy, and I hear mixed things about the quality in general.

I have considered Browning Hi-Powers and 9mm 1911's - but they are awfully expensive. Also considered the CZ75b, but I think the grip might be too big. I hear mixed things about the trigger, and I don't see any sold locally.

Anything else I should know about these options, especially when compared against each other? Let me know if I am missing anything else.

Thanks,

Matt.

No bad choices in the bunch.

Go paw them all and shoot the ones you can, then decide what works best for you.

If you don't want to do that then just go buy a HK P7 PSP and be done with it. Great gun that will only go up in value.

Take it from ON-High.. LOL

Without any doubt, acc to God's best Angel when it comes to guns and 9mm's, Michael, you need only choose and get a Sig P210..

Ok, now that I've had my laugh, as mentioned above, it should be the one that "feels the most natural, point to aim" that fits you grip/hand, along with, what you can learn, positive or negative, about any 9mm.. make, model, etc.

Any good used refurbished Sig 226, or 229 is a great gun and value IMO, and you should try and find, and feel, a new Beretta Px4 9mm, NIB around 500 bucks, also IMO, excellent DA/SA trigger and pull weights and smoothness right out of the box, and gets better and better each 300 rounds up the road.

Funny you should mention the P210. I want one BAD! Just a little out of my range for now!

Oh, and to GunNut. Can the P7 still be a comfortable shooter at a rate of 100 rounds / hour? I got the idea that it was only good for about ~40 rounds continuous before it was too hot to handle.

I have the cz and it fits the criteria you listed real well. I agree somewhat about the grips being a bit large and will be getting some thin replacements from ghostholster.com pretty soon. I recently changed out the main spring to a 15 pounder (cost about 5 bucks and 20 minutes of my time) and the difference is very noticeable. Good luck with your choice.

How about the 92fs? I just picked up a stainless steel one from budsgunshop for $500 shipped plus transfer fees.

You just GOTTA shoot the P239 in 9mm! Get some of the hogue with finger grips as well.

If the grip fits you (and I mention this because you say you don't like double stack grips), the Glock 17 or 19.

If price is an issue, the Ruger P95, at three bills or so, is one heck of a deal on a stone cold reliable gun.

Look at some used S&W Their well made almost as ugly as a Ruger But relieable and accurate. I have a 3913 and its a nice pistol. Used S&W can be found cheap I bought a bang up 9mm for a 150 couple months. back . Looked bad but shot fine. Sold it a week later for 250 . New owner loves it

If a new Hi-Power is too expensive for you, maybe consider a slightly used one, or one of the Hungarian copies, like the FEG FP9. If you're a fan of the way the 1911 feels, you would be hard pressed not to like the feel of the Hi-Power.

Bannockburn just beat me to the solution.
Try a HP, and after you fall in love with it, search out a good used one. As he said, a FEG or CD could be just the ticket.

I would say look at CDNNinvestment's catalog of police turn in guns. You can usually get quite a bargain. I would echo many other reccomendations - if there is a gunshop in your area, go grab a few, and see how they feel. If it feels like a brick, pass on by to the next.

9mm 1911

Why not track down a used 9mm 1911? Springfield Armory has one and I think Kimber does also.

You can often find Hi-powers (Belgian made) under $500 if you look long enough. I would get that or a 9mm 1911. Take your time and be patient.

Enough said.....

Taurus PT-92.....$399 plus shipping and you get the single action with a hammer.... just like the 1911. 17 rd mag, stainless steel and an accessory rail. Life time warranty. A copy of the Beretta 92....the NATO approved side arm of the US military. All the other 9mm competed, but our Army picked the 92.........must be some good gun. Or spend $200 more and get the Beretta version. Basically the same weapon.

A double-stack that will fit your hand? How about the Smith & Wesson M&P? I have a compact 9mm that has run flawlessly. If you will not be carrying it, you may as well get the full-size.

CZ75s do have a pretty long reach to the trigger, when it is forward in DA mode. A B model can be carried/shot from "cocked and locked," while a BD (which has a decocking lever instead of a manual safety) model starts the hammer out from about a "one-third-cock" position, shortening the trigger reach and stroke.

For ccw or just target shooting??for target shooting I will recommend the CZ 75b very accurate and reliable..for ccw well right now my alternate is the SR9 but i wish i can afford an EMP or any 1911 in 9mm..

If you liked the 1911, and the expense of ammo was an issue, look into Handloading. Cuts the cost at least in half, and you learn a lot. Not just the "hows", but the "whys". If you have the time to do it, and some place to do it, why not? If you have any questions, I'm sure someone here can answer them.

That said, if you want my recomendation for a 9mm, and you already have the 1911 bug, get an EMP. Yes, they are spendy. But they are NICE. I've got mine! I had to save for a year to get it, but I"VE GOT MINE! It's my CCW, my house gun, bowling pin gun......... the way I see it, if you are going to bet your butt on a gun, get the best you can afford. I got MINE!

glock 19 but if must from your list then hk, in fact u cant go wrong with it.

Walther p38 cannot handle the kind of 100/hr performance. The barrel will give in.
