A few years ago i was given a Lee-Enfield rifle, I love this rifle dearly but the problem is that ammo is hard to get at a good price, a single box of 20 going for around 20 to 30 bucks, I've been looking at a new rifle or carbine long gun so i can practice more with something other then a .22, and maybe do some hunting with it. So far the top contenders are a Hi-point 9mm carbine which i like since i have 2 other 9mm and it would make getting ammo simple, or a SKS or Saiga AK, but i havn't had a chance to really look into those yet. any advice or insight would be appreciated.

30/30 is going to run you about $12 for 20 on average. .223 and 7.62x39 will run you about $6 for 20. if you get a semi you will burn through a LOT more ammo than with a bolt or lever gun.

Thanks, I'll check out the 30/30, i lot of people i know have one so it shouldn't be hard to try and see how i like it.

If you plan on deer, the 30-30 would be my choice over a 223. But if you only plan to kill woodchucks, fox, coyotes, and bobcats, the 223 is a wise choice.

I know Nagant's well one of by best friends was given one by his father on his 18th birthday and i think there are few things that could make him happier, and thanks hopefully I'll find a better price on ammo though i think in the long run a better caliber could save me more.

SKS is a fine all around weapon to hunt with & plink with. I dnt have one anymore & thats a mistake on my part.

Hi, Nar
Some of these fellas offer sound advice. 30-30 is good out to 150 yrs, so is the 762X39r. Russian hunters have used surplus SKS for yrs, hunting big game with 'em out in the boonies. But, if you are looking for more bang for the buck, I suggest you start reloading.

Otherwise, you are stuck with foreign ammo with steel cases that will eventually wear things down in whatever rifle you choose. .308 bolt actions are good game getters, and so is the 30-06. 300 win mag will take just about everything between Barrow Alaska and Valpariso, but to save $$$ there, you must reload. An option stated earlier is to buy ammo in bulk, from a surplus ammo dealer. Going to their store, even if out of state, will save you $$$ on shipping/haz-mat chgs. Ck out Miwall...an outstanding ammo dlr in Grass Valley Calif....google it.....they used to take orders over the internet and then you could pick it up at the next gun show in your area...(they usually have a booth). Sometimes, a rifle in a pistol cal will give some joy, as can reload for rifle/handgun combos you might have, and power 'em up! pls see my email to you.

Pick up a CZ 527 Carbine chambered in 7.62x39. It comes with iron sights and shoots some of the least expensive centerfire ammo you can get. :D

I like the CZ idea, i have a CZ 75 and have always been happy with it, so I'll look into that.

Buy the Hi Point 995TS it's fun to shoot, accurate, dependable, and you already have the ammo. I just bought one and like it. It cost me $149, which leaves me some money for a BSA RGB scope and 3 more mags. I'm going to deck mine out, just for the heck of it.
