Man, 18, sought after gun, hatchet attack at gay bar
Three patrons hospitalized after being wounded

Police are seeking suspect Jacob D. Robida, 18, of New Bedford.

NEW BEDFORD, Massachusetts (CNN) -- Police on Thursday are seeking a man in connection with a gun and hatchet attack at a gay bar in New Bedford, south of Boston. Three people were wounded in what authorities said they suspect were hate crimes.

Authorities described suspect Jacob D. Robida, 18, of New Bedford as violent, armed and dangerous, and suicidal. He is wanted on suspicion of three counts of attempted murder and hate crimes, police said.

Police said Robida has dark hair, is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds. He is believed to be driving a 1999 green Pontiac Grand Am with Massachusetts plate number 85EC58.

Robida's friends and relatives are assisting authorities, said Capt. Richard Spirlet, a police spokesman.

One bar patron suffered deep cuts on his head and was shot in the face, and two others were shot in the back and chest, authorities said.

They have been identified as Robert Perry of Dartmouth, Alex Taylor of Fairhaven and Luis Rosado, apparently a neighbor of Robida's, said a source familiar with the investigation.

Hospital officials said Perry was transported from St. Luke's Hospital in Dartmouth to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston in good condition. Boston is about 50 miles north of New Bedford.

Police said one of the victims was taken to Boston by helicopter, and a second, in critical condition, was flown to Boston later.

The attacker also may have been injured at the bar.

Police identified Robida as a suspect after someone in the bar said they recognized him, Spirlet said.

A bartender, who asked only to be identified as Phillip, told CNN he had a bad feeling when a man entered the Puzzles Lounge after 11:30 p.m. ET Wednesday and asked if it were a gay bar. (Watch the bartender describe how an armed man attacked patrons -- 7:17)

"At that time I was a little nervous as to why he was asking," Phillip said. "I don't know if it's because he felt out of place if he wasn't gay, or if it's because he wanted to actually find out if he's in the right place."

He said the man was dressed in a hooded, black sweat shirt, with the hood over his face, and baggy jeans. "He just had a stone cold look on his face ... just emotionless," Phillip said.

Recalling he checked for ID before serving him a drink, Phillip said the identification indicated the man was 23, with an October 19, 1982, birth date.

After finishing the drink and ordering a second one, Philip said, the man moved to the back of the bar, watching a game of pool briefly before taking out a hatchet -- a small ax the size of a hammer, Phillip said. "He started swinging the hatchet on top of this customer's head," he said.

The bartender said he called 911, trying to keep the phone from view, and urged patrons out the door.

Meanwhile, the attacker struck a second patron with the hatchet, pulled out a gun and shot the first victim in the face and the second twice in the head, Phillip said. A third person also was shot in the abdomen.

Phillip said he came face to face with the attacker at the bar door, and the man pointed a gun at his face and pulled the trigger but nothing happened.

"I thought I was done," he said. "It was as if I was watching a television, and somebody put it on mute, and I heard nothing."

Calls to police concerning the nightclub are rare, authorities said. "If all the bars in the city were that quiet, it'd be great," Spirlet said.

Phillip said he gave police the glasses from which the man drank for fingerprint and possible DNA testing. No weapons were recovered, authorities said.

Robida is a graduate of New Bedford's junior police academy, a program intended to build social skills, self-esteem and self-confidence in children 12 to 14, police said.

CNN's Rose Arce, Katy Byron, Deborah Feyerick and Alison Gilbert contributed to this report.

I love how they just "out" the gay victims on this one.

Guy must've been using a 9mm. :neener:

We can only hope...........

"Authorities described suspect Jacob D. Robida, 18, of New Bedford as violent, armed and dangerous, and suicidal. "

Pretty much a poster boy for "Expendable." :barf:

I sincerely hope he "offs" himself soon, before he hurts anyone else and before he costs the taxpayers still more money.

But -- how could this have happened in MA? Guns are strictly controlled there and permits are only granted after careful screening. It must be fiction; this could never happen in Mass.

...Somebody tell me, will Pink Pistols accept donations from straight folks? 'Cos it sure sounds like we need more of 'em with guns. There's too many loonies around.

I was at the Cow Palace gunshow about 15 years ago, and my friend Rob was ahead of me, talking to me as we walked down the aisles. He turned to say something and ran headlong into the "AntiBashing" crews that used to patrol (identifiable by the huge pink triangle on their backs) the City to prevent the then-common gay bashing that was going on. This guy was about six-foot four, and 220 lbs of muscle. Rob sorta bounced off his chest (Robs only about 5'-6", former Marine) and turned to me, and in his best Daffy Duck said ".....mother.....mummm"

The police suspect that these were "hate crimes."

...as opposed to the many times that people attack people they LIKE with guns and hatchets?

Not to make light of it, but man, the "hate crime" thing is STUPID.

And go Pink Pistols!

He apparently had Nazi crap at home, too. Real winner.

"He apparently had Nazi crap at home, too. Real winner."

I have "Nazi crap" at home also. Several German WWII guns, some bayonets, swords, daggers, badges, etc.

There is a big difference between a collector of Militaria and a Neo-Nazi.

I live here in Mass., and am well aware of this. The news is just full of it. Funny thing, though, is that (according to the news) the kid (18) goes into the bar, has a drink and asks the bartender if it a gay bar. Bartender says yes, and the kid goes berzerk with the hatchet and/or machete. He gets into a scuffle with patrons, then pulls out the pistol and begins to shoot his way out.
Still a bad scene, but one would think that he might have done this without the pistol, since he used the hatchet/machete first. Are the liberals going to make us take safe axe courses and register our farm implements???
Also, the kid has his own neo-nazi website. I thought the feds were up to snuff on these websites.

Says he is 18

You cannot legally have, own or possess a handgun here in Massachusetts unless you are 21, have taken a hangun safety course, have paid the $100.00 fee, walked into the local P.D. and personally handed in your application for a class A- "LTC" or B "Pistols and hi cap. long guns". The hand gun he used was illegally obtained.

Big surprise ?

Screen the law abiding folks all you want and the BG's still find a way to get a pistol.

He apparently had materials promoting and glorifying the Nazi philosophy, hence my use of "crap".

War relics and weapons aren't "crap", and don't represent the philosophy used by the government they might have been used under.

This miscreant needs to be caught. That he attacks people with both gun and hatchet clearly indicates that he is a threat to public safety.

Forget "Hate Crime", if he is brought in alive bring out the Big Hammer "Conspiracy to deprive someone of his civil rights".

So, upon further review, this kid allegedly showed a fake ID. Nothing new there. And he was served two drinks.
Oh well, shame on the bartender.
And you all should see one of the victims. He got f'd up pretty good, but he seems to have a pretty good attitude (almost joking) for being hit in the face with a hatchet and being shot in the back. and he's back home.
He's lucky, but the other two are still in the hospital.
But about this hate mongering nazi website.
I thought that the feds were up to snuff on this sort of thing?
They show on the news some of the pictures of the kids site and he's got it all...nazi flags, guns, hate messages, etc...
One would think that there would be enough for the feds to investigate a threat.

WBZ

the Boston radio station had an interview with a girl who knew him. she said he had a bunch of Nazi tatoos. She also indicated she did not want to see him get caught.

I caught this on the Pink Pistols mailing list (yes, us straights are welcome. After all, who are they gonna learn from? :neener:). My response? First, sorrow that people got hurt. Then I thought about it: how likely is it that those hurt were some of the screaming leftists that have disarmed MA? Very much of the same cloth that keeps us in WI disarmed? I got no sympathy for their having to deal with their victim disarmament zone...

And you suppose this is the case...how? :p
A resident of MA is a victim, so assume all residents of MA are leftists. Great.

Hint: They're not.

And you have "people of that cloth" keeping rights from you in WI. So if you were hurt in a public-place shooting, should I automatically assume that you're one of them?

Did not want to see him get caught? I hope the MA police haul her in for questioning as a person of interest as to his whereabouts, with caution as to what happens to people who aid and abet a felon.

I have NO sympathy for people who shield and assist criminals, especially violent ones.
