Maybe a strange post, but has anyone done a home upgrade job on a mosin and have pics? My dear brother who was taken from me a year ago left me a bunch of firearms. Nice stuff, with one cheap half bubba'd mosin. He had picked up the ATI monte carlo stock. That is it. The bolt looks to be original exept slightly melted and wierdly bent. The after-market sight that had been soldered on fell off in the first few months he had it. He only paid $50 for it, so any damage might actually make it work or look better.

Today I went elbow deep in her. I took the bolt assembly apart and cut that melted bolt handle off, but cut the ball off first, I re-used it. I found an old shotgun scope mount that I cut down a little and it now looks alot like the three screw set up that I've seen cost like $90. I took an old chisel that was useless from being sharpened too many times and welded it into the groove I cut into the original bolt handle assembly. I then welded the ball on the end after cuttling the chisel down a little. Then I smoothed everything out. with my sander and my grinder. I did a fire and function check, everything looked and worked fine! Tomorrow I will be using the drill press and tap to attach the scope mount and then the rings and scope.

So far I haven't spent a dime. Maybe I'll paint it, I'm not sure yet. Has any of my fellow high roaders done this before? I would love to see some pics if you could spare them. Before anyone flames me for messing up a classic, it was trash already, I think my brother bought it to monkey around with. I sure wouldn't do this to my Hex reciever, she is mint. I'm just looking for some ideas of what else I might do. As always thanks for the help guys!

here is a pic of my frankenmosin 7mmx54r. barrel is from a madsen lmg, scope mount is a burris p.e.p.r. ar-15 mount turned backwards on a short section of picatiny rail mounted to the front ring. i need to load up some ammo for it.

220 swiftAI mosin, barrel is from a remington 722. reciever is a remington 1891. one day i'll put it in a decent stock and put weaver k6 in a q/d side mount on it.

it actually shoots very good. with irons off a bench at 100 it will keep 10 rounds right at 2". i have a lyman 36 swing sight for it that should knock the groups down a little more.
i haven't loaded up any ammo for it yet all i've done is fireformed some cases with remington and winchester factory ammo.
i also have a spare timney trigger i'll put on it when i do the lyman 36 since the safety cant be worked with the lyman sight in place

Those are some really cool conversions, looks like they would be alot of fun. I bet if you would go to the range you would get some serious attention. Keep them coming guys!

I bought my mosin "broken" so tinkering with it was inevitable LOL.

Barrel was hacked off at 23" with a ...hacksaw...then filed flat, the recess was cut with a spare lee brass timer and a .308 pilot with a single wrap of teflon tape.
The bolt handle was cut off, a saddle made and a replacement pinned in place, i reused the ball on mine also.
Scope mount is an ati, as is the stock, Im actually quite happy with both.
I had a set of sights that i cobbled together from a 1903a3 front, and a mini-14 rear peep attached to the stock rear, also worked quite well. I recently sent those on to someone who can actually use them.

All in all im very happy with my project rifle.

Really slick. It looks a lot more like my Steyr Mannlicher Schoenaur now with the bolt recontoured down nearly flat like that. Very slick.
