Maybe a strange post, but has anyone done a home upgrade job on a mosin and have pics? My dear brother who was taken from me a year ago left me a bunch of firearms. Nice stuff, with one cheap half bubba'd mosin. He had picked up the ATI monte carlo stock. That is it. The bolt looks to be original exept slightly melted and wierdly bent. The after-market sight that had been soldered on fell off in the first few months he had it. He only paid $50 for it, so any damage might actually make it work or look better.
Today I went elbow deep in her. I took the bolt assembly apart and cut that melted bolt handle off, but cut the ball off first, I re-used it. I found an old shotgun scope mount that I cut down a little and it now looks alot like the three screw set up that I've seen cost like $90. I took an old chisel that was useless from being sharpened too many times and welded it into the groove I cut into the original bolt handle assembly. I then welded the ball on the end after cuttling the chisel down a little. Then I smoothed everything out. with my sander and my grinder. I did a fire and function check, everything looked and worked fine! Tomorrow I will be using the drill press and tap to attach the scope mount and then the rings and scope.
So far I haven't spent a dime. Maybe I'll paint it, I'm not sure yet. Has any of my fellow high roaders done this before? I would love to see some pics if you could spare them. Before anyone flames me for messing up a classic, it was trash already, I think my brother bought it to monkey around with. I sure wouldn't do this to my Hex reciever, she is mint. I'm just looking for some ideas of what else I might do. As always thanks for the help guys!
