I do and did in the Army as well.

I never worried about the safety but the bolt release difference can make things..... er, sporty.

Having distinctly different hand guards seemed to help some.

Todd.

the bolt release doesn’t worry me much. Once you fire the first round, that’s a non issue unless you do a lot of tactical load out changes. As a mere civilian, I don’t see a scenario where I’ll have to quickly change between slugs and buck etc.

I used to own several 870s. Now when it comes to pumps I own only the 590a1 and Ithaca 37. The 37 has a cross bolt safety like the 870.

Heres the thing, I don't hunt and need my shotgun to come into action quietly and i dont carry a shotgun concealed where I must have it out and ready quickly. While i find the safety on the 590 more intuitive, I have never been in a situation where I needed to flip it on/off quickly. For my needs, the shotgun is kept cruiser ready of sorts (not exactly, but I'm not bound to department rules as I'm not a LEO). Action charged without engaging the release, chamber empty, magazine full, safety off. The pump is now "locked" and won't chamber a round without squeezing the release but will be easier to rack and no safety to fiddle with.

I guess if it ever got to the point where I felt the need for that 9th round, the 590 safety makes the most sense for a lefty like me. No reaching the the guard to push it or adjusting my grip. I just try to remember to always grip the gun so that the safety is going to be bumped forward be it on safe or already off. I've often though of it as "rushing forward" toward the aggression...at least that keeps me from getting confused as to which way it goings to make the gun go bang.
