I've got a few prints in a show opening at a big museum in Texas this weekend. I'm trying to decide on the proper carry pistol to pack along.

I've got a Texas Concealed license. I'll check museum rules before going in with a legally carried firearm.

Do you think something industrial grade, like a Sig or Glock or should I go retro with a 1903 Colt Pocket Model or Luger? Maybe I should carry a 9mm for the European flair but with high capacity like a Browning Highpower. I could go revolver...surely no BG in an upscale setting could object to being shot with a .38 short out of a 1938 Colt Lightning?

Somehow I think they wouldn't understand .45 at all.

Lots of old friends going to be there. I want to make sure I "clunk" when hugged. The redhead says she will carry extra mags, railroad flares, 1000 feet of parachute cord, tape, flashlights, batteries, gloves, flex-ties, et, et in purse so I will be free to meet and greet.

Sounds upscale. Will you be in a tux? You may want to go classy and traditional. James Bond always looks good in a tux with a Walther PPK.

Just sayin' ... :D

Seems to me if it's an opening for stuff you did, you should carry something nice and classy for the occasion. Skip the Glock, go for one of the Colts or the High Power.

No open carry in TX so what difference does it really make? Carry what's comfortable and will do the job.

EDITED to ADD: Guess I ought'a read the whole thread before responding as the above is an almost exact duplicate of the previous post... :(

oh my god - it's concealed. nobody's going to see it.

Carry what you're most comfortable LOSING if you're involved in an attack.

I'd have to see some of the prints before recommending a proper pistol. :D

Black and white, Nature, a stainless revolver in .357 or larger.

Tigers on Velveteen, Hi-Point with custom electrical tape.

Maybe he wants to feel even more dressed up for the occasion? When I visited the Texas Ranger Museum a couple of months ago, I was glad to be carrying my Colt Snub, instead of my plastic gun. It just felt more appropriate.

Go with something classy and classic, the Lightning sounds cool!!

Colt SAA, 5 1/2" barrel, .45 colt, Ivory stocks. Been gettin' the job done in Texas for some time now.

You're an artist. You could carry a bloody machete, and that would probably just push up the value of your work.

Is there really any serious chance of criminal attack at an art opening?

I've been attending, curating, exhibiting and lecturing at art openings for about 20 years and so far... nada as far as criminal activity occurring. OK, some of the art was a crime, but nothing requiring gunplay. In fact, I've never even heard of any sort of ruckus at an art showing.

Is it possible you really don't need to be armed at this event?

after artistic consideration..

Just going to pack the usual. I'm sure we will be perfectly safe- as safe as any upscale location. Museum of Fine Arts Houston has reasonable security most places. I wouldn't dare travel without a firearm. The 4-runner will have a shorty AR broken down in the back boot with a bandolier of mags in with it. Didn't the President tell us to keep an eye out for orange arabs or something?

No shooting in Houston, but there are rifle matches the next two weekends.

Mostly packing because of the liberal group that I will be in. They KNOW I shoot a lot and I wouldn't go among them unarmed any more than I would fly without making the airline check a pistol. They need the exposure.

Sig 220.

Man there's a lot of buzzkills in this thread. What's wrong with having a little fun and thinking of your sidearm as an accessory?

:uhoh:

With that argument, why carry anywhere? Most of the places I frequent nothing ever happens.

Nothing - if open carry were legal. In that case Form and function both are important. But since open carry isn't legal form becomes a non-issue and function is everything.

Carry a Thompson, tuck a rose behind your ear, wear a sweatshirt imprinted "The Brady Campaign Does Reruns," and call yourself a "performance artist." :)

Trybalrage- Yup, odds are you will never need a defensive firearm. But some places are higher risk than others and warrant being armed as a precaution. I am armed most of the time. But not every single second of every single day. These threads asking about how or what to carry at events such as Bar mitzvahs, weddings, children's birthday parties, bridal showers, art shows, etc strike me as just a teensy bit overboard. These events seem so low risk that being armed doesn't really appear to be a high priority.

VARifleman- I can wear green underwear on my head any time. Doesn't mean I necessarily WANT or NEED to do it all the time.

I have to laugh at this thread. HEHEHE. Only an artist would think... hmm which of my CCWs would go good with this outfit.:neener:

Personally I only have two CCWs. One for summer, and one for the rest of the year.

If you really wanna be stylish conceal it in your front pocket and impress the female art goers with your... piece.

Just so you all know- YOU DO NOT CHOOSE THE TIME AND PLACE OF A CONFRONTATION! Get it? The bad guy chooses for you. I have seen a violent encounter outside a church for Christmas Eve Mass in a good part of town. And I have seen violent encounters outside upscale events. The time and place of a violent event will be chosen for you, by others. (unless you are in the biz, like a Marine):)

Just stick it in your pants, so every time you reach out to shake hands
your jacket opens slightly, and each handshake results in a teasing
glimpse of your "hogleg".
