A Few Days After I Got My FL CCW
I was driving home from Jacksonville, FL one night and I saw a van on the side of the road, with about 15 Haitians on the side of the freeway. I asked what was wrong and they said they needed a light to change their tire.
I am mistrustful enough of my fellow man that I stayed in my car, adjusted the position of the car so that my Q-Beam shone on the wheel in question.
Several of the people began to move toward my car and get behind me, which was not going to happen. I backed up some and they stopped.
They put the tools away and got in the van and crossed the median and went the other way.
I now had a HOT spotlight to put down, but where? While I was figuring that out,
a member of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office pulled up, lights on, behind me.
I had just got my permit from this state, and was unrehearsed in what to do in this instance. I put my hands where he could see them, in the light from behind with my hands behind my head, fingers interlaced (I fear being shot by nervous police, more than armed BGs).
The officer approached and said, "I see you are in a surrender position. Why is that?"
I explained what had just happened and that I had a firearm on my person, and I didn't want him to be surprised.
He asked where the weapon was? In a pouch around my waist, I explained.
I told him I had a CCW and it's in my wallet, however it is also in the pouch around my waist.
The officer said he was just stopped to see if I was alright, and nervously got back into his cruiser and left.
I told a friend who is a Florida State Trooper and he said "I don't blame him! I'd have left you there too!" He said something to the effect of I might have come up with a way to get out of a ticket.
