My carry permit got me out of a speeding ticket, but I feel bad about it.

A Few Days After I Got My FL CCW

I was driving home from Jacksonville, FL one night and I saw a van on the side of the road, with about 15 Haitians on the side of the freeway. I asked what was wrong and they said they needed a light to change their tire.

:scrutiny:I am mistrustful enough of my fellow man that I stayed in my car, adjusted the position of the car so that my Q-Beam shone on the wheel in question.

Several of the people began to move toward my car and get behind me,:what: which was not going to happen. I backed up some and they stopped.

They put the tools away and got in the van and crossed the median:confused: and went the other way.

I now had a HOT spotlight to put down, but where? While I was figuring that out,
a member of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office pulled up, lights on, behind me.:uhoh:

I had just got my permit from this state, and was unrehearsed in what to do in this instance. I put my hands where he could see them, in the light from behind with my hands behind my head, fingers interlaced (I fear being shot by nervous police, more than armed BGs).

The officer approached and said, "I see you are in a surrender position. Why is that?"
I explained what had just happened and that I had a firearm on my person, and I didn't want him to be surprised.

He asked where the weapon was? In a pouch around my waist, I explained.

I told him I had a CCW and it's in my wallet, however it is also in the pouch around my waist.

The officer said he was just stopped to see if I was alright, and nervously got back into his cruiser and left.

I told a friend who is a Florida State Trooper and he said "I don't blame him! I'd have left you there too!" He said something to the effect of I might have come up with a way to get out of a ticket.:D

I didn't think CO required notification of carrying when stopped by a police officer. It's not really anything they need to know unless they ask.

So far I know 3 people that have gotten out of tickets (that have never gotten out of a ticket before) since they got CCWs...

Personally, I dont have friends that dont know I carry. I have nothing to hide from close friends. If they are not close enough to know I'm carrying...we wont be travelling anywhere together.

Got pulled over last weekend on a stretch of road here that turns from a highway to a county road for 6 blocks and then back again. Still looks like a highway though ( I dont speed on side roads, but I am a little heavy on the highways). Handed him my drivers licens and permit. He asked me where the bully was. Thats all. He went back to his cruiser, wrote me my ticket and sent me off. Two days later pulled over for a headlight out ( kids and a bbgun, both lenses but only one light died) it was about 11:30pm. Gave him both cards, he didnt even ask where the gun was, just went back, ran me and sent me on my way....Obvious dui phishing trip.

I was given a warning because I was wearing a tie in my license photo. :)

I was out of state in the middle of nowhere, at night on a freeway doing 10 mph over the limit.

That state's laws did not require that I show my permit and I had no idea how the officer would react, so, I kept my status to myself.

The officer said I must be a "good guy" for having a tie on for my photo and gave me a warning. He said deer are a hazard and was worried for me. I thanked him and stayed within the limit.

Actually, that officer probably saved me because a few hours later, a deer was standing in the MIDDLE of the freeway. My reduced speed helped me drive around safely.

Some clarifications.

I felt bad about not telling the officer, not about getting out of a ticket. His heartrate probably jumped a few BPM when he pulled up the CHL on his computer. I could have saved him that trouble by telling him, but I locked up because my friends were in the car.

Second, he flat out said that he was going to issue a citation for speeding. Then he walks back to his car, finds out I have a CHL, and issues me a warning instead. If that's not getting out of a ticket then I think your standard of proof is too high. :D

Third, CO is not a required-to-notify state. It does however come up when they run your license.

Lastly, these are good friends, and one has come shooting with me before. He was just suprised I was carrying because he didn't see it under my coat.

I always eliminate the question and give em my HCP along with my DL. Saves me time and words. (feel like if I hand him the permit I am telling him I AM armed.)
