A range gun under a $1000 bucks?
I have had an HK USP 45 forever, bought it new and it is a 2xxx serial number series. NEVER had a failure, accurate, and very comfortable to shoot. Only complaint I would have is there is nowhere near the parts and accessories there are for the 1911. You can pick up a used one for around $500 avg.
I also picked up a traded 4506 a few months ago for $300k, third gen S&W's are popping up all over for cheap. I love the gun, the heavy frame eats recoil making it comfy to shoot for prolonged periods. It is also insanely accurate.
My carry gun is a Champion.
My vote would be for either the HK or S&W if you just want a range gun. I have had great luck with mine.
