Cats are not a viable option for me at this time, but would be nice if they were for the snakes as well as mice & rats. The dogs I have now eat any stray cats that wander up (not just kill them, EAT them). The dogs won't let us know when any snakes are around like a cat probably would, so we just get to discover them by accident (none including a snake bite yet) and dispatch them with a good blast (stinkin' rattlers).

Here's the deal: You don't need a pussy cat. :) You need a cat that can train dogs...

boooring

rat shot is not over kill...hence the name.

Of course, advice from me is advice from the guy who enjoys using his GPS - to get lost! (Believing that his better adventures have come from meeting and seeing things out of the way and unknown)

Sure you might lose time from watching football, or eating Doritos, or leaving internet forum posts...

(had contact again with the enemy this morning, successful mortar barrage at 0640 hrs silenced all movement) Fortunately the wife was already up

:D

Thanks for responding, Clean97GTI. I appreciate it.

I'm always amazed at some of the things I learn from this board that aren't necessarily firearms-related....

I spent a couple thousand ridding my house of squirrels last year. Earlier this year we had a bumper crop. I bought a Crossman $29.99 pellet/bb gun and problem solved. I wanted a Benjamin, but the Crossman was cheap. And it worked very well.

Wow this post went a lot farther than i expected :D But i have to say it's been one of the funniest post to read. I'm waiting till a friends of mine gets home from a trip at the end of the week to go through his air gun collection. As for all of the other sugestions: Cat is a no go (im deathly allergic) and i already have traps and d-con set out for the little SOBs. So looks like im going mouse hunting early next week

Cabelas et al sell a spring-action air shotgun. It would work well, but it's not cheap and the shot would make a mess indoors.:)

Hey Chris, are you allergic to dogs? Terriers are single-purpose rodent-killing machines.

My 13yo son and I would sit in the backyard in the evenings and shoot the mice as they ran out from under the storage shed to the dogfood bowl.

We used both a Crossman pump up air rifle with either pellets or BB's, and a cheap Chinese one-pump pellet gun. Both were very effective.

When we moved from that house, my son wanted to catch some mice and take them with us to that we could continue to have this "hunting time" :)

My wife had a talk with him

Blowgun

Now, there's an idea!

And not just ANY old blowgun. Got to be the Crawford:

Gotta get me one o' them.

While not nearly as fun as "lead poisoning", set out jar lids with peppermint oil. They can't handle the smell, and it actually makes the place smell better to humans. Environmentally acceptable.

Moth balls work great if you don't mind the odor.

The bucket thing with water works well. I suppose peanut butter would work just as well or better.

I'd REALLY discourage D-Con. My dad did that when I was a kid. We had a mouse that died in the closet wall under our stairway. That closet stunk like dead mouse for years.

Best thing - get a cat :D Effective, stealthy and the remaining mice get the word out & seems like the entire neighborhood clears out!
