Hello,

I have an opportunity to buy a new anschutz rifle.

I'm an engineering student and I enjoy hunting. I need a rifle with which I can shoot thousands of rounds and analyze my groups to improve my shooting. I've found a used Biathlon 1427 rifle close to my dad (so he could pick it up for me) for about the same prize as a new cz455.

The way I see it, if I want to be able to shoot really tight groups, the Anschutz is the way to go, but I don't know if the difference in accuracy is noticable or worth it.

Basically, if I go with the CZ I get a new rifle and the ability to buy a .22 WMR barrel later or (practical because laws dictate that I use the .22WMR if I want to go after hare/jackrabbit and other laws dictate that I can't own more than six rifles for hunting).

If I go with the anschutz I get a rifle that seems to have a nice stock and top precision. The question is, is the precision difference noticable?

I looked at prices for CZ 455's in .22LR. I saw prices around $370.00

The iron sights alone for an Anschutz will cost you that much. The adjustable trigger will cost that much alone. The stock is worth more alone. The buttplate is going to be about $250.00 alone.

If you can pick up an anschutz, complete with sights, buttplate, handstop, etc, for $400.00, and you don't do it,

call me so I can get it!

Now whether you can take advantage of an Anschutz will depend on how much practice you put in, and whether you buy match ammunition. Cheap bulk ammunition will shoot the same in the $370 CZ and a $3,700 Anschutz. (give or take). However, with match ammunition and lots of practice, you will get better groups out of the Anschutz.

I have been shooting a vintage Anshutz for the last three years in small bore prone. My scores have been improving, shot a 1194 last Nov, but I am still not shooting within the capability of the rifle.

It takes time to shoot within the capability of match rifles.

My first suggestion would be to let me buy the Anschutz.

My second would be to buy the Anschutz. If I have to choose between a common gun vs a less common gun I would by the less common gun first. CZ's are more plentiful and could get one later, or a Savage.

I am assuming the Anschutz will better sights for one. By better I mean more precisely adjustable.

That is a tough choice...Here are my thoughts. I have a Ruger Model 77 in .17HMR and an Anschutz 1517 MPR .17HMR. I bought the Anschutz because the Ruger groups get worse as the barrel heats up. When the barrel gets hot, I was shooting 2" groups at 50 yds...totally unacceptable, so I bought the Anschutz. The Anschutz shoots almost same hole groups at 50 and less than 1" at 100 regardless of how much I shoot. I have done this with Hornady and CCI. Sounds like you have conflicting goals...precision vs expense. If precision is your top priority precision is your goal, I think the Anschutz will be the better option. That said however, I have no experience with CZ, but hear good things about them. CZ would be much cheaper. You will never make the perfect decision...just buy both of them!!!

Hey axxel, A question: where do you live that you are so restricted in what you can own? That is scary. I am already over the limit imposed on you and would like to own several more.

Y'all can forget about buying the Anschütz, I'm in Sweden, as is the rifle.

I'm very close to calling the seller and sealing the deal (already sent off an e-mail with some questions and a notice of interest), but I really can't decide at the moment.

The asked price is about what I'd spend to get components for 1000 reloads of .308. To me, that's at least two years worth of shooting, and all of it with my beloved Mindy, an m14s rescued from China.

The second hand rifle market in sweden is really distorted by the limitation on rifles, since you have to sell a rifle every time you buy one. I can't help but wonder how the Anschutz can be priced so low, the used anschutz is actually 100 USD below the new CZ. Does anybody know anything about the particular model? He says four extra mags comes with the gun and I can tell from a picture that they fit in the stock.

Well first I would run..not walk, to buy the Anschutz..I live in snow country and biathlon (summer and winter) is fairly popular. That model is highly regarded by that crowd. Haven't heard one bad report. 4 extra mags is a double bonus as I know they don't come cheaply.

Secondly...God bless the USA..I don't think I could possibly decide which 5 rifles I would keep. Just my Garands would have to be cut by half..;)

Axxxel,

Your post reminds me how lucky I am to live where there are fewer restrictions on buying, selling, and owning firearms. However, in my lifetime, the number of restrictions has grown at an alarming rate. Periodically, some idiot politician tries to restrict gun ownership even further, with the occasional tyrant who wants to eliminate private ownership completely. Beware, my friends, Beware!

We're lucky?! He's the one getting an Anschutz for $400! Not to mention the Chicom M14 he mentioned which we also can't get here.... :D

axxxel, the website someone mentioned, rimfirecentral, really is pretty great. At first glance it looks like it's mostly there to serve users of the Ruger 10/22, but I've only ever used the forums for other guns, and I have to say, they're fantastic.

Yes, damned lucky!! I own 7 rifles and 3 shotguns and a couple of pistols. Plus, I have owned dozens over the years. Too many politicians think I don't "need" that many guns, even though I shoot all of them. I plan to buy and sell guns all my life, unless some weasel is successful in denying me my constitutional right to do so.

Yes we are ALL lucky to live here..As far as Gun Rights are concerned. If you get overly political you will get the Kids thread shut down..Support the NRA

I know that this is a very old thread.

I Hope that you got that 1427 Biathlon, and that you are happy with it.
Magasines alone are around DKK 400/each, new, in Denmark.
10 round mags from the hunting rifles fits also.
