Just got an ad from Brownells advertising a new, US made Remington 870. Who is making this shotgun? I wasn’t aware that the shotgun line had been picked up by anyone.

RemArms, not to be confused with the old Remington. The conglomerate was split up in the bankruptcy sale. Federal got the ammo, Ruger got Marlin, RemArms got the Remington firearms, few of which are being made yet. Express, Fieldmaster, and Wingmaster are showing up. Have not seen 1100, 700, or anything else yet.

I got that email this morning too. I actully am intrigued by the fact it is reamed and threaded for Remchokes.

I have not had the chance to hold any of the new production, but even before the Remington empire was divided by the bankruptcy court, the fit and finish of the newer guns was declining. Yes, an express will work OK, but if you enjoy wood, polished and blued steel and a silky smooth action, you may want to find an older Remington Wingmaster. That and the venerable Model 700 are the guns that made Ilion famous.

Remington was the last major gun maker to go to choke tubes, but they have been doing it since the 1990's. I can't imagine any gun maker NOT making a shotgun that didn't accept choke tubes.

RemArms is turning out a lot of 870s. They gone back to a metal trigger group from the plastic trigger group. The actions on the 870s are very slick and by the looks of things, they have hit a home run with the new 870s. The 870 Fieldmasters I've seen have very nice fit and finish, much better than the old Expresses. The actions are very smooth.

RemArms is also turning out the V3 shotgun now. I am seeing them show up for sale here and there. These are new production guns.

They are also turning out Model 700s. Mostly ADLs and SPS synthetics, but also new production BDLs, CDLs and muzzle loaders. The 700s I've had my hands on are, again, fitted and finshed better than previous guns.

From what I have personally seen, the new RemArms is tunring out better guns than Remington has in the past.

Sounds good, especially the highlighted section.

Probably because Winchester made the 1200.;)
I think they are making 1100 Competition Synthetics also, my LGS got one in recently.

I talked to a friend who got a layoff during the bankruptcy. He said he has spoken to his friends who still work there. He said quality seemed to be important to management. His one friend who I also know, is working on the 870 line. I saw a new 870 at the dealer yesterday when I picked up my Kimber. It seemed well made. Make quality stuff that people want and sales will return.

I have 1 870 Police synthetic and 3 870 synthetic express models , 1 of them is a 20ga youth and the other 2 are 12ga . I think I bought the police around 2010 . I bought the first 12ga express after a day of hunting in the rain in 2014 . I decided that I wanted a beater gun , so I wasn’t looking to spend a lot of money , since I already had a old A5 , my 1st shotgun and a SX3 . So I bought a 870 express . I cleaned it up and bought a buck kicker choke for it and patterned it with buckshot . I liked the pattern , it held a very tight pattern at 40 yards . I took it to our hunting club annual turkey shoot and won the first round . They have a rule that once a gun wins that you have to take it back to the truck . I got my SX3 and shot the rest of the shoot . Right before I retired in 2016 , I decided to buy a couple of loaner shotguns to take new hunters , hunting . I was happy with my 870 express and Basspro had a discount using their CC and Remington was offering a rebate , so I bought a youth model 20ga and another 12ga like I already had . I got them for $225 each out the door . I pattern the newer 12ga with my buck kicker and it patterned just as good . I had read all of the bad quality threads for years , but I must have got lucky with 4 of them . I am very happy with mine . Is it as pretty as a Wingmaster , no , but I wasn’t looking for that and as far as I can tell it functions fine and I don’t see any quality issues , only cost savings , of synthetic furniture and mat finish . I don’t think any of the blue collar workers shotguns of recent times look as good as what they use to sell to the average man . Glad to here that Remarms is making quality shotguns again and not getting negative reviews .

Does anyone know of a major retailer that is carrying the guns in store?

I know Brownells has them in stock.

I went to a local gun store - starts with B ends with Uds....They had the Remington 870s there. I didn't not like the feeling of them. They were the full size field model. All had plastic (space age polymer) trigger guards. Not impressed.

I wonder if now is a wise time to buy any rem arms product since they know that there are alot of naysayers and people expecting them to fail, my thought is perhaps they would be very concerned about staking their rep on garbage flying out the door at the outset that QC "may" be especially good???

Just a thought. I know common wisdom would be that employees need time to be trained and become skilled. I saw a nice looking new wingmaster a couple months back for $600 and considered buying it. I didn't get to work the action but it looked nice, not as nice as a real WM though...

Would love to see a 20 gauge Upland Wingmaster with a gloss finished English stock and original pattern checkering on it. Put a 22-24inch barrel on it with Remchokes.

No police department that I know of still utilize 12 bores in a lethal role, them all being replaced with Armalites.

I'm only familiar with how California operated.
In California every police academy will have a training block with the shotgun.
Whether the hiring department/agency uses the shotgun will depend on the department.

A rifle isn't mandated by the basic academy to be taught.
The hiring department would need to provide rifle training on its own time and budget.
Whether the rifles are bought by the department or personally supplied by the individual LEO is another issue and will depend on the hiring department.

Where I worked up until 2017, every LEO qualified with the shotgun (and pistol) twice/year. The shotgun was carried in each patrol vehicle. The rifle was optional and the LEO had to request to be trained and issued the Colt-brand AR15. If the LEO was issued a rifle, then there would be the handgun, shotgun, and rifle with which to qualify twice/year.

Again, each department would decide on the shotgun vs. rifle issue independently of the other departments. I suppose other states would handle the long-gun choices differently.
