May want to stay away from the XD until they get the recall stuff figured out.
I haven't owned one but keep hearing great things about the M&Ps.
I've been more then happy with my Ruger SR9c for a compact. Shoots great and has a good price point.
Your idea of "cheap" is certainly different than mine. I don't consider a $500 + gun like the M&P's or the XD's as cheap.
I am assuming that you are interested in semi auto's from the question.
You want a good reliable inexpensive handgun look at the Turkish made CZ clones sold as TriStar or Canik that run in the $350 range. The Serbian Zastava CZ999 a Sig type clone in .40 or 9mm runs around the same price and their 9mm Tokarevs are a good reliable military design though only single action and 8 round mag capacity but can be found for less than $270.
The Taurus PT92 is a clone of the Beretta 92 but about $100 to $200 lower in price. The Ruger semi's are also a good gun that is reliable and accurate but IMO not that "pretty".
Don't know why you reject the Glock out of hand when you are considering 2 other "plastic" guns. The Glock is a great tool for self defense, extremely reliable but not a very good looking gun. I have many pistols and only 1 Glock, a model 19. It is however what I choose for home defense and to carry for self defense.
I see you have poly guns listed but are you open to steel? The CZ 75b runs about the same price as the others listed and the quality, accuracy, and fit are all great.
Taurus 24/7 G2 or taurus pt111 millennium g2 are both great options at lower price points than the XD and S&W. Springfields recall was on the XDS and S&W had a recall on their Sheild model.
If it's not going to be a concealed-carry piece, the Ruger P95 (now discontinued, but still readily available), might be a good contender. It's a DA/SA action, hammer-fired, polymer-framed pistol that takes a 15-round magazine (outside of California and other capacity-limited jurisdictions.)
New ones run at or below $400; used ones about $50-100 less.)
The SR-series runs about $80-100 more, new and used. Main difference is firing mechanism; these are striker-fired, and do not have a "trigger transition" to acclimate to. They are still in production.
I think everyone would like more information to answer that question fully. Based on the two pieces of info, need and gun, and around $500, I can only answer what I would buy if I had $500. Polymer striker fired, M&p or M&pC. Hammer fired, single action steel or alloy; CZ SP-01 or P-01. I've purchased incredibly expensive 1911s that won't outshoot a stock CZ. The cz is slightly more but you get night sights (sp) and you'd have to drop $35-$135 on APEX parts to get anywhere near the trigger. Either way a new gun will be fun, always is.
Just about anything from Ruger would be a reliable option. For CCW an M&P9c is also dependable and has a good reputation. Most are fun to shoot so it just depends on the reason you are looking for a gun as to what is best.
Of the ones you listed I would pick the M&P, a buddy of mine has a full size one in .45acp, one of the best SD or target handguns for the price. I also have a buddy and he has a full size XD in 9mm and he does not like it, but he also has a couple of Sigs.
As far as the Springfields go look for a subcompact 3" in 9mm or 40. Very nice and reliable. It's the new XDS that they have the recall on not the subcompacts.
