I have been worried about over penetration lately and have been thinking about getting a slightly smaller handgun than my Glock 22 for Home Defense.

The guns that come to mind as being safe to fire indoors are the Lilliput and the MTH Mini. A third option might be the Kolibri Car Pistol, but I don't think I can afford the high dollar prices for the tactical model.

Now I have been reviewing the literature on the VPC website and they state that any of the models will be equally deadly at close range but does one have a particular advantage over the other?

Anyway please help me select. :)

I have always been a fan of Hi-Cap 45s for home defense. IE Glock, Springfield... with a tac-lite like the TLR1

Not much over-penetration. Lots of leeway for cloudy eyes and tiredness.

I feel that if you are proficient enough you should reward yourself with the higher capacity of the 9mm, but you simply wont be proficient if you are half asleep. 1 vote for a 45 ACP. Use the heaviest ammunition that you can get.

I only thought I was a gun guy, but I do not have a clue what these choices are. For an HD handgun, I need more info for what your needs are. Is this ever going to be carried? Do you perform regular maintainance? Are you recoil sensitive? Are abundant spare parts & ease finding of accesories important? Is a tactical light being considered? What price range? Are asthetics important? If so, what do you like? Steel? Plastic? Aluminum? Blue? Stainless? Revolver? Auto?

That should narrow it down a bit.

Wikipedia English - The Free Encyclopedia

2 mm Kolibri

The 2 mm Kolibri (also known as the 2.7 mm Kolibri Car Pistol or 2.7x9 mm Kolibri) is the smallest commercially available centerfire cartridge, patented in 1910 and introduced in 1914 by Franz Pfannl, an Austrian watchmaker, with financial support from Georg Grabner. It was designed to accompany the Kolibri semi-auto pistol or single shot pistol, both marketed as self-defense weapon.

Hmmm...I guess I might want SLIGHTLY more oomph from my HD choice than a 2mm projectile would provide.:D

Those are all very good questions.

Is this ever going to be carried?

Just around the house. I will likely carry something else outside.
Do you perform regular maintenance?

If you mean on guns then yes, I know something about that.

Are you recoil sensitive?

Just with pistols. As I age I find myself having problems with larger rounds like the .357.
Are abundant spare parts & ease finding of accessories important?

Not really.

Is OP a concern?

What is OP?

Is a tactical light being considered?

No, I think I will just use a flashlight, or the overhead if it is working.

What price range?

I am pretty open.

Are aesthetics important?

Not at all.

I voted "other". Based on where you have been viewing literature might I i suggest a whistle or maybe a squirt gun filled with lemon juice.

Does the lemon juice have disabling effects?

You mean, something like an actual firearm for serious defensive purposes?

Well now, not everyone shares that opinion.

Jonathan Spencer, consultant forensic scientist and firearms expert, said that although the gun, which fires bullets at a speed of 399 feet a second, was tiny, it could still prove fatal and in the eyes of the law was as dangerous as a machine gun.

He said: "The general threshold for perforating the skin is about 330 feet a second.

"Apart from bone, skin offers the greatest resistance to penetration. If it can pass through the skin it is potentially lethal, even if the bullets are small.

"If you shoved something 3mm across into someone's chest you could kill them. It's the same with these bullets, they could penetrate the heart.

"It is capable of killing someone. Under section 5 of the Firearms Act it would be a prohibited weapon. It would be on the same scale as a machine gun."

See a firearms expert said that a rimfire revolver is just like a machine gun.

My favorite HD gun, would have to be my Mossberg 500 w/ 18.5inch barrel and a few rounds of 00 buck...Don't have to worry about over penetration (For the most part) and, if someone comes a knockin on ya door at 3am in the morning, and its dark and you turn a corner, you don't have to make sure you line your sights up on the target...just point and shoot.

i voted other too..... i never heard of most of the choices.... mine will be a 6" s&w model 27.... 158 gr. fed jsp ammo..............

If you can find 10 people who even know what those guns are I'd be suprised. Somehow I think you'll be getting alot of "Other".

LMAO! ...that's pretty dang funny... :D

Seriously, If you want to do HD with a handgun, my choice would be a hi-cap 9mm with low-flash 124 or 147gr hollowpoints, assuming you've practiced with it, and that you have a good long-gun plan to go along with it.

It's all about shot placement. Hit the intruder in the eyes making them sting, giving you chance to flee.
Same with the Mentz!

You know shot placement is a good point. I think if an intruder had his eyes open than any of these weapons would likely achieve adequate enough penetration to cause mild stinging or temporary blindness. What about safety glasses and body armor?

Something common and something reliable. 9, 38, 40, or 45. Not a hard decision, but I have no idea what any of the choices are that you listed. Gotta be a automatic, Beretta, Glock, or Sig.

I think aesthetically the MTH Mini is the best looking of the three. Also six rounds of high power ammo.

Shown here 8X actual size.

If someone figured out that you had shot them with any of those choices it would probably just make them mad.

hah man you guys are ruthless.

That being said I'm with GunFanatics, except swap that mossberg 500 out for a 870 :) .

If you really want to use a handgun then take your pic of 38, 9, 40. or even 357 and just use 38s while inside.
