Today only Midway USA is offering in stock powders with no Hazmat Fees. Choices are limited to Hogdgon/IMR/Winchester powders that are in stock.

Before you order check powder valley.

I went to midway and compared the price at checkout with no hazmat and powder valley was still cheaper with hazmat.

The only way it would make since for me is, if someone wanted to order a few sampler lbs. Compared to my LGS that charges $28-35 a lb., not including VV powders.

Otherwise, yes, Powder Valley is about as good as it gets on bulk buys.

They did this earlier in the year with primers. It seemed like a deal until you realized that powder valley's every day low price usually ends up being a few bucks cheaper. In fact I believe that midway drop ships from powder valley.

Midway used to drop ship from Powder Valley and i have not heard there was a change.

Thanks to the OP for the heads up.

I got the same email and checking prices didn't show any savings.

Mailers are nice, but a careful shopper is reminded to always compare total cost

When I got the email from midwayusa.com I was excited because I am in the market for from 24 to 32 lbs of powder now before a possible President Hillary causes prices to rise further. A quick search reveals that the price of an 8 pound jug EACH is easily nearly $30 more at Midway than at Powder Valley. So, no bargain! Now if Powder Valley would just waive their Hazmat fee during a promotion. The reason why this is such a tough pill to swallow is because it was less than a decade ago one could buy 32 lbs for around $200. Now, the cost is a bank-breaking amount in excess of $700 when shipping and Hazmat fees are included!

What exactly is a Hazmat fee? It just sounds like another "tax". Where does it go and who profits from it? Without getting too political, it almost seems as though it is encouraged, or at least not discouraged, by the political party that is anti-firearm. I can think of things one can get in the mail that are more hazardous than smokeless powder, such as lithium batteries, and a Hazmat fee is not required.

My understanding is that it isn't a "tax" as it isn't being paid directly to a government agency...it is kept by the vendor. The first hint would be that not everyone charges the same fee and sometimes you'll find a vendor who reduces the Hazmat fee as part of a promotion.

It is a fee to offset the training and extra handling cost of shipping certain products

Lucky me has ks tax with powder valley. I never liked the way they do shipping, they tell you at the end. I Have picked up there in person and very nice staff.

If THAT'S the case, why isn't it waived more often, or significantly reduced???

I "guessed" that it possibly may not be a tax, as Midway is waiving it, but, on the other hand, it has not been waived before, in my experience, and as it is so uniformly high, I suspected a government entity somewhere profited from it.

It seems like to me that vendors are losing a LOT of business because of this. Indeed, it has caused me to refrain from ordering...

It is an extra fee imposed by USDOT for shipping dangerous items like powder, gas, etc. Some companies that overcharge normally, or are so big they can take a smaller per purchase profit will pay it for you to get your business. People are creatures of habit and if you start buying from a company chances are you will continue. Works for just about everyone but reloader types...

I've seen it waived several times by different vendors, usually in conjunction with a large purchase.

I got some powder last month, I forget the vendor, where buying 20+lbs of powder lowered the HazMat fee to $15...I think we bought five 8lb jugs and split the $15 three ways.

I thought it was Midway, a while back that waived the Hazmat fee for buying more than $150 of a certain brand of primers

It is really no different than waiving shipping

It is NOT A FEE CHARGED BY ANYONE GOV AGENCY! It is just what 9mmepiphamy said, it is a fee charged by the vendor to recoup the cost of software and dealing with the regulations and training for their employees. That is why it varies and some might wave

If Midway gets its powder from Powder Valley I'll be skipping the middleman in the future

That was Midsouth Shooters offering $15.00 HazMat on powder sales of 15# or more.

They're powder prices almost exactly match those of PV.

Went to midwayusa site two powders mixed availability all others out of stock so lot of hype no products.

Powder Valley and Midsouth Shooters are still cheaper. . . unless you're buying something else with 'free shipping' to waive the other $10 shipping fee.

Now I'll have an anti-cant level on my target rifle.

Haz-Mat is a fee charged to the buyer by the shipper, not the vendor. It is not a conspiracy to keep ammo components away from gun owners/reloaders as many things can be considered hazardous materials. The fees go to the shipper to offset the additional training and certifying of personnel and "extra" handling.

Let me clarify my previous post. Hazmat is a fee charged by a SHIPPING COMPANY to offset the cost of the USDOT hazmat endorsement that the truck and driver must have to ship certain dangerous items, powder being one of them. Its not a fixed price per trip, but a special extra cost the shipper incurs, so they pass it on to you through the vendor you buy from. Sometimes the vendor will waive this extra charge if you buy enough for them to still make a profit...

Midway went from being one of the best discount sellers of firearms related products to one of the highest priced in the market. In the 90's I was recommending them to everyone and back then they had free shipping. As of late they have been known to gouge on shipping.

The other day I received an email from them showing that Hornady bullets were on sale. I compared the prices to Powder Valley and Midway's sale price was higher.

I guess Larry Potterfield has to pay for all those trips to Africa somehow.

Midway used to have good deals on factory second bullets, most were Hornady, but the last few notifications I've got on them they were nearly as high as first runs.

I actually met Larry Potterfield one time. It was in the lobby of Mandalay Bay during Safari Club convention. Honestly a real nice guy who has done a ton of fundraising for NRA. But just like board member Pete Brownell, he's interested in profit too.

With the advent of online shopping, Natchez, Midsouth Shooters, CDNN, Sportsman's Guide are all vying for the thrifty shooter's dollar. I believe Midway and Brownell's are still the one stop shop for gunsmiths and guys who don't mind paying retail. Just my opinion.
