Hello,

I was wondering how to purchase handguns at gunshows. i know i need to do a license amendment prior to picking up a handgun, but with gun shows only spanning the weekend, how would this work? can i own it (take possession) but not use it until its on my license (i dont think this is possible from everything ive read). i already own 1 pistol (with 2 on the way after the amendment process -why did i wait till the holiday to put it in :banghead:)

I live in westchester, licensed to own, and am referring to the upcoming middletown show.

the only other logic i could think of is that the gun goes to an FFL closer to my area, but paying an FFL transfer fee on top can be a deal breaker... and i may not have the proper info at time of sale

TIA for your answers and comments

:)

I feel your pain brutha........glad I live in Texas, we don't put up with that crap.:banghead:

Yeah. It's a pain all right. It does have to work just like you'd think it would though. You do need the permit amendment, just as you would if purchasing at a store, before you can take possession of the gun. It makes it fairly pointless to buy a handgun at a NY gun show because you will need to pay to have it shipped to your local FFL or travel later to the business front of the FFL selling the gun after you get the permit amendment. Honestly though, the Middletown show is cruddy anyway. You'll find about 80% war memorabilia / hot sauce merchants / total garbage / etc, 10% franken-gun 'gunsmith specials' dealers and the other 10% is ridiculously overpriced even before you factor in travel and FFL expenses. Ive been to at least 4 middletown shows. They are very small and quite pointless/worthless.

The funny thing is, in Orange County ( which Middletown is in ) they dont have same day permit ammendments. Here in Ulster county we do. We can buy a gun in the store, go to the sherrfis office and get the amendment right then and there, and go back to the store and pick it up in the same day. Middletown is about an hour south of where I am now, maybe a little more. So technically I could travel an hour to the show, buy a gun, travel an hour back to the sheriffs office, then travel back an hour to the show, then back an hour home. Ridiculous. If you're an orange county resident , where the show is, you cant even do that since you can't get it the same day.

geeze, well thanks for the info.

i guess ill stock up on mags and ammo components...

even the price of that jerky vendor went up

I live in Western NY. In Monroe county, the clerks office sends a clerk to the gun show. They were there for the gun show at the dome last year and again this year. So you can buy the gun, take the receipt, walk to the clerks table, amend your permit and take the gun home with you.
