October Rimfire Match:

Later today or some time tomorrow I'll give it a try. I just sighted in a 4x scope on my Winchester 290 a few minutes ago, and I have a Marlin as well, open sights. Looks like fun!

EDIT: Maybe I'll try the centerfire with my Mosin Nagant next weekend, or this evening. Probably not though, I've only put a few rounds through it. There should be a monthly shotgun competition, either buckshot or maybe slugs? Anyone want to try? 1 8 pellet buck shell per target at 25 or 50 yards, scored like this? Now that sounds fun. Anyone else think so?

Welcome, Noah! A fixed-4x might not be the fanciest scope, but it is easily my favorite for hunting with a .22LR (they tend to be simple, reliable, have a good parallax setting, and have just the right amount of magnification to find the prey and make the shot).

As far as another match, scatterguns aren't really my thing (same goes for pistols), so I am ill-equipped to start one, but feel free to start one if you like.

:)

I need to print some of these off. I found a nice 50 yard range with solid benches. It's DNR ran so no range fee, though that means anyone and everyone shows up. Still, fairly sheltered and solid benches. I had the 40x out with cheap blazer and with how it was shooting I would have expected scores in the high 80's to low 90s. Might have to take it and the Wolf out and see what it does, assuming I get another break to head out there.

I started following this forum again after a spell. I think the last time I shot a rifle was over a year ago. I was involved in a head on crash last August with my motorcycle vs. a truck in my lane coming around a bend. I lost that battle and wrecked my shoulder, head, neck, hip, groin, and both wrist along with a beautiful bike. Three weeks after all that I'm sitting in traffic on my first real day out of the house and some nitwit hits me from behind going 50 mph and totals my car out. I just paid it off and bam. My head went from mush to new and improved mush in the matter of seconds. Way too many meds have been taken in this ordeal. So I've been fighting nagging stuff that wouldn't even let me raise a pistol up to shoot. I couldn't even rack a slide on my 1911's. My therapy was indoor putting when I could somewhat hold the damn thing with some kind of grip. Then I get diagnosed with a type of skin cancer on the face and ear a couple of months ago. Three surguries later and damn it, I'm gonna shoot some guns. I went out two weeks ago to shoot a .204 Ruger and .220 Swift but things didn't work out to well. My shoulder tear couldn't take the slam and my face wasn't too kind either to the abuse. Might as well try some rimfires. I bought three Savages in the last few days (BTVLSS & 93R17 FVXP 17 HMR's, and a MKII FVXP Fluted 22LR. I had the two 17's along today with two other Weatherby rimfires. I need more time with the Savages to see what they like and get used the that trigger. So the Weatherby bolt got most of the work today. I'm not sure on my scoring tallies and some of the holes are multiples and real damn close to the black. I get a 92 & 94 but my mind is buzzed out and things don't always add up. I liked stringing them sideways for some reason. Too many people shooting and my targets were a little crooked so it made it tough lining them up. Way too many lines appearing and disappearing. My wild ones were shot the same time as a boomer next to me was touched off. All shot from the bench at 53 yards.

Weatherby XXII
Leupold VX-II 6x18x40 set at 18
Bull Bag front with wobbly wood blocks underneath
Rear Bag
RWS 40gr Target Rifle
Nice and sunny, alot of spiders

Only one more day available for me to shoot so I hope it's nice out.

Welcome back, Judah Ben-Hur. It looks like your scoring [and shooting] is spot on.

Rimfires may not have the same thunder as their centerfire cousins, but they can still be a lot of fun. FWIW, I have had the best luck with the 20gr. Hornady XTPs out of my Savage (as well as a couple other's I have shot).

:)

I tried some Hornady 17g Vmax along with the 20g XTP's. There were only 10 shots of each for both Savages and they were a little over an inch guesstimate. Not enough to worry about now, I didn't want to use up my targets I had on hand. I also don't like interupting people when they are shooting by going out many times to look or mark targets. The green fiberglass stock felt really small and I had the scope mounted too far forward so I was fighting it. My plan for both is to get better mounts, bottom metal, trigger guard for soon to be ex-fiberglass one, Boyd Evolution stocks, and maybe some trigger tuning over the winter. The thumbhole one deserves a really high powered, fine cross haired scope perferbly in silver. Any leads?

My Weatherby 17 HMR really shoots good at times but I didn't have enough of the good stuff to feed it. I know it will not feed 20 gr XTP's or CCI Gamepoints. The Gamepoints shoot good but its single feed and that blows. When I first got it and settled it in, I could pick off flies at 50 yards with pretty good consistency. I still have a few of the "splatter" targets. lol

Silver finish (like gloss) is a tall order, but I know of a few that might fit the bill; what's your budget?

:)

There isn't any with with this hobby. :)

I'd say less than $450 plus I'd probably swing for some silver mounts and bases to complete the package but they can be adders.

Judah - I think your target you scored as a 22, is really a 23 - giving you a 95 overall (5+5+5+4+4=23) - anyone else concur?

-tc

and... Welcome back to shooting!

I tried out a new rifle this morning: a new Ruger 10/22 Target Tactical - what a blast to shoot! Unfortunately, it has a crappy $29 Tru-Glo red dot sight on it - at 25 yards, all I can see is the dot, and then just barely... I need to get a few cloudy days this month, and see if that helps the dot acquisition any...

Just did a bit of digging and the Sightron that I was thinking of is a bit outside of your desired budget (over $600), as is Meopta, leaving only Leupold for a good quality scope if you're set on silver (and you might have to go custom shop, which would drive the price up). If it were me, I would forgo the silver finish on the scope, as it severely limits your options and often doesn't match the rifle well (rings and bases tend to match much better because they are SS instead of matte anodized Al.). If matte black is on the table, you can get a Sightron S-II (the silver one was a S-II Big Sky, which accounts for the added cost) with high magnification well within your budget and have one of the best (IMO of course) target rimfire scopes on the market.

:)

I don't doubt it; those VX-3s are excellent scopes, a bit overpriced IMO, but you can get exactly the features you want, making it a good choice for certain builds.

:)

I've been checking on the Weaver's but haven't done any thing for Sightron. I will have to look them up and see what they have. I've heard people mentioning Mueller alot.

I'm a little down in the dumps because I had xrays done early this morning and just got back from the doctors. Not good was his assessment. Hip replacement candidate at 49 years old. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

The T-Series is an excellent scope, but isn't variable power (which most folks want). If fixed power will work for you, it might just be the way to go. Just remember to limit your magnification to something usable, as mirage becomes a big issue at very high magnification. The Classic-V isn't bad either, but the high powered models don't come in silver.

:)

There is a used silver Weaver T-36 for sale on Rimefirecentral for $325.00 shipped
Many guys use them in benchrest competitions . If you use your rifle for benchrest exclusivly it would be a good scope

Went to the range today and really struggeled. Been having problems with the scope on my Kimber 82.
Not happy with the results but was going to post pics anyway and just noticed that I was supposed to shoot at 50 yds, I shot mine at 100
I gotta start paying more attention :)

Well, I think you found part of the problem. I know you've probably already done this, but make sure to check your mount(s)/rings.

:)

Rings are tight
Its a Sightron 6-24X42 AO scope that I cant seem to get a Parallax adjusted properly.
It may have to go back to the factory

Bummer, that is a very nice optic. Hope you get it worked out, but if not rest assured that Sightron has good CS.

:)

Got a chance to shoot the rimfire match outdoors today. The horses were in the barn all being checked by the vet so we took the opportunity to put a few rounds into the berm (and targets too).

Class: Unlimited/Target
Caliber: .17HMR
Rifle: Savage 93R17 GVL Left Hand bolt/heavy barrel
Ammunition: Hornady .17HMR, 20 grain VMAX
Position: Prone
Rest: Bipod front, squeeze bag rear
Environment: Outdoors, wind slightly gusty, 6.8mph average directly from the left, temperature 78F (measured with a Caldwell Wind Wizard)
Time: 12:30 p.m.
Target order of fire: C, D, A, B
Scores: C-23, D-24, A-21, B-24 for a total of 92

Vision was getting blurry and I went to my optometrist this afternoon. I had been suspecting it and he confirmed that I'll be needing cataract surgery in my right (non shooting) eye almost immediately and after that one heals he suggests getting the left one done as well, so This may be my last match for a little while, though I suspect I'll be healed up enough to shoot the November matches later on in the month. At least, I hope so.

Jim

Jim, I hope your surgery goes well so you can continue to best my scores again next month.

:)

Arrgh. I'll get the targets scanned, and my guess at the score tomorrow, but the darn front sight walked out again. :banghead:
I think it was holding moderately well while I was shooting these targets, and didn't start working until I was trying some Q&D AQT targets.

Which Lock-tite do I want?:D

My opinion of my shooting ... gee, I wish I had 30 years back on my eyes. Between floaters & presbyopia, seeing that darn front sight is tough (even before it hits the floor) I wobble a bit more than I used to, but maybe some of that will get fixed with practice (which has been shamefully lacking of late)

This will be iron sights, sporting. The indoor range I use has a pretty sturdy platform for a seated shooting position with elbows on the platform. Sorta prone, without having to take the shelf off the shooting position & get down on their floor. I also need to run a few rounds through this with the front sight fixed, from a nice solid rest, and get this zeroed in. I think it's shooting a little high.
