Welcome to the Rimfire Match for the month of October! This match is open to any and every 22 caliber (as well as 17 and 20 caliber) rimfire rifle including the perennial favorite .22LR, as well as the .22Short, .22Long, .22 Mag., .17HM2, .17HMR, and 5mm Rem RF Mag (as well as any oddball rimfires that you might have). This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

There are Two Optics Divisions:
->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 25yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 50yds.

*Note that the distance is back to our typical range of 25/50.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Unlimited/Target Rifles (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used)
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles)

Both classes can be shot from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are permitted in the Target Class only. Shooting stick(s) are now permitted for both classes (either crossed or walking stick style). Use of a sling is encouraged.

25 Yd. (Irons) Target: See image in the link below (graciously donated to the firearms community by MidwayUSA). Scale to 100% on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is to fire 5 shots at each of the four bulls. Scored as 1pt. for each broken line and a bonus point for each shot completely within the center bulls, for a maximum score of 100pts!

50 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above.

If you enjoyed this match and want a bit more challenge, or just compare your rimfires to their big brothers, check out the concurrent Centerfire Match using the same target at double the range.

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo, Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different division/class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before October 32nd. ;)

Leaderboard Mk. I:

Don't know if you guys noticed, but sometime last month the leaderboard got all boogered up (looks as if it was shot :uhoh:), luckily I keep a backup copy so I got this one looking halfway presentable.

You, sir, are far more optimistic than I...I'll typically take about a dozen and curse myself for printing so few. :uhoh:

That reminds me, I need to pick up a new ink cartridge!

Nice targets Mav
I like this target too.
And a few days ago, UPS deliverred the ammo I'd orderred (CCI SV and Wolf MT).
Just in time for the new match.
(I almost orderred some Wolf Match Extra. Is that stuff worth the extra few bucks?)

My monochrome laserjet got fried, so I am looking to replace it with a color model. Still prints cheap, but it'll let me print in full color with decent graphics quality! I have an inkjet, but the thing takes forever and ink costs a fortune. Nowdays, I believe a color laser is the way to go...especially if you like paper targets (not so much if you want to print photos).

IMO it is absolutely worth trying, but results will vary so don't buy a pallet to start off with.

Thanks,
I think I'll try a box of 50 next time I order ammo.

Gave one a try today, not sure how to score it though. I had to darken in the center circle with a Sharpie but I could still only barely make it out at 25m. I need to get PRK.

Setup was CMMG dedicated 22LR upper on RRA LAR15 lower with iron sights, 3 point sling rigged into a 2 point for shooting support, and Federal 550 round Value Pack from Walmart (still psyched that I currently have no trouble finding 22LR ammo at Walmart, back when I first got that rifle in the spring of 2009 such was not the case)

Edit to add: forgot to mention position was prone unsupported.

happygeek, it looks to me like you have one completely in the bulls (not touching the dividing line), 5 breaking the line of the center bulls, 10 in the innermost ring, with the remainder (4x) in the next ring out for a grand total of 63. Not to shabby.

:)

I got 3 rimfires, all Savages and it ain't usually, it's a certainty that I will have 1 flyer in 10, more likely 1 in 5.

The only Savage that doesn't seem to do flyers right now is my .223 and it even likes junk Serbian ammo better than anything else, go figure! Look at my last month's Centerfire Match target.

Eh, it's only 2.0MOA for scoped and double that for non-magnified, so it's entirely doable. Just need to get everything right and keep it that way for a couple strings, but you're absolutely right that the consistency is going to be the problem. I plan to cheat and see if I can squeeze a .172cal chunk-o-lead between the lines (FWIW, I didn't intentionally make scoring easier for the wee-caliber rimfires, it just seemed to come out that way dunno.gif ). Speaking of which, I sure do with that some folks would start to make the old 5mmRM again (both rifles and expand the choices of cartridges), that'd be a swell cartridge for target and varmint alike.

:)

If I get out shooting again this month I think ill give it a try. Was out last weekend and out of a 10 round mag about half were touching and the rest were spread out to maybe an inch. Can do pretty good with either one of my .22s but never tried one of these for some reason. Should be fun.

I'm in! 81 pts. Unlimited Target Class:

Savage Mk. II TR
3x9-32 Scope
Harris Bi-pod

Ammunition used: Blazer Standard velocity, SK Standard velocity, Remington Thunderbolt Sub-sonic, Federal Gold.

Conditions:
Sunny/70F/Winds 10mph, gusting to 15mph,

Shot from the prone position @ 50 yards:

My best groups today came when I remembered to watch the wind in the grass, using the SK, which I 'borrowed' from a friend - he only gave me 10 rounds - just enough to get hooked. That target contained two targets which had 1 hole groups.

I used my normal Blazer for this one - it was a bulk pack, and quite inconsistent. I could easily tell which rounds contained more priming compound than the others, because of the recoil from the rifle.

The Federal Gold was just 'OK' - not spectacular. The CCI Standard was the worst of the bunch - this rifle simply does not like it. The suprise came from the Remington Thunderbolt - extremely consistent, when I watched the wind, and had the fewest flyers of any of the bunch. If I hadn't forgotten to shoot the rest of the target (I left one whole bullseye completely untouched), I might be looking at a higher score.

Next time, I won't put eight of these out at one time - twice I shot on the wrong bullseye, leaving me short for the next bull...

Went to the range this evening, and after some moderately decent practice, started in on the targets. I was astonished at how poorly I was doing, until finally .... I saw that my front sight had walked sideways and fallen out! Buggers. I think the set screw is still there, and I'll get it back on and try again. It's the front site from TechSite, on my Ruger 10/22

TC, forgive my correction, but don't believe you quite made 92. 5pts. is only awarded for rounds completely within the bullseye, and 4pts. for breaking the line of the bulls (with 1pt. deducted for each of the outlying rings). I apologize for making the scoring so difficult (was trying to slightly reduce the awarded points to increase the difficulty a bit, whilst making the targets large enough to use irons without difficulty.

SkyDaver, I can see where that might be a problem. I had the rear sight on my M1 Carbine do the same thing. It would hold zero just fine while I was shooting (and proved to be reasonably accurate), but it seemed to need zero adjustment each time I took it to the range. Several weeks (and numerous range trips) later I noticed that the sight wasn't losing zero, instead it was just about the slip out of the notch. I staked it back in place, and it has been doing fine since. Hopefully you'll not have lost any bits and your fix will prove to be just as easy.

:)

So what is my score

Of course I had to make it difficult for myself. Can someone help me score it.

Savage MKII TR 22LR: Here is a review I did of this when I first got it. I did have to send it back to Savage for what I mention in the review. This is after I got it back. Savage MarkII TR Review
Redfield Revolution 3-9x40mm
Shooters Ridge Bipod
50 Yards
Ammunition: 22LR Fiocchi Super Match 320

Target A Shot Standing
Target B Shot Standing
Target C Shot Kneeling
Target D Shot with Bipod no rear rest

I will be going back out to try and improve upon my standing.

Outstanding position shooting, Mr.Revolverguy! With a target like that we might have to start calling you Mr. Rimfireguy. ;)

I'll do my best to score it as accurately as possible. Starting from easy to hard, it looks to me like a 25+21+20+13=79.

I had a bit of a problem with my TR (mine is a 93R17) as well, also related to the mounts. Mine were so tight that neither I or a local smith were able to remove them (in order to add a monolithic tapered picatinny mount) using proper tools and techniques. Fortunately, Savage CS took very good care of me, arranging for shipping both ways and even dropping a free magazine in the box. It too has proven to be a tackdriver (when you feed it what it likes).

:)

2nd attempt!

Okie dokie - here's my 2nd attempt - an all around beautiful Mid-Atlantic autumn day for shooting:

Savage Mk. II TR @ 50 yards
Cheapo 3-9x40 scope
Bi-pod, no rear bag, prone
CCI 40gr. Standard velocity .22lr
Sunny, 74F, winds 0-5mph, RH= 35%

I still don't quite grasp the scoring method - can someone give me a hand?

Got it now! I also edited my first post - I don't know how I came up with 92 the first time - because the second time adding it up, I can see it's an 81... anyhow, thanks!

In a nutshell:

5 pts. - the center bull, cleanly, not breaking/touching any portion of the boundary line
4 pts. - the center bull, breaking the boundary line.
3 pts. - the next ring out from the bull
2 pts. - and so on,
1 pt. - and so forth.
