Ok, after looking at a number of SHTF, and only one rifle threads. Lets see which one gets the biggest number of hits. Lets also assume that you can only get rifles that are easily available to the public currently, no M-60's, or full auto stuff.

Sorry to the first posters, down to southern shooter, I did not get the posting criteria correct for the poll on the first try.

So the poll is now up.

I appologize that there was not enough space for a lot of good choices like
.30 Carbine,
.308 AK's,
Semi Auto Hunting rifles like the BAR,
Pump action rifles,
Other rimfires like the .17's, 5mm, etc.,
Other gauge shotguns,
Dragunov's and PSL's,
Bullpup designs,
Blackpowder,
Double Rifles,
Drillings or Combo guns,
Pistol caliber carbines,
Semi auto belt feds,
FN SCAR, SIG 556, HK 416 or other new exotics.
etc.

Sorry the poll is now up. And, can someone please tell me how to post a poll without posting the first post before you have the opportunity to work on the poll slots themselves? On another board I post it does not come up until after you put in the poll questions. Obviously this one did.

I picked 12 GA shotgun. It's my "go to" gun for just about everything.

Chances are you will get a lot of "semi automatic, military styled, civilian sporting rifles" (I believe that's the correct term :D), considering this is the internet.

Yeah "The Deer Hunter" you will notice that I did not include any "Assault Rifles" on the list, just your plain ole civilian sporting, hunting, and basic target guns. :) Nothing here for the anti's to get their panties in a wad over.:uhoh:

My "go to" gun is a .45 ACP Glock pistol backed up by a HK/Benelli M1S90 shotgun.

If I could have one and only one rifle it would be a modernized M14 with an 18.0" barrel.
If that was not available I would want a modernized 7.62 AKM.

T/C Encore .300 Win It will take just about anything on Gods green earth. Accurate enough for about any range shot.

Since the question was for one "RIFLE" in the Rifle Country section, I didn't consider the shotgun. :)

I chose an AR-10 style rifle, since that is my most accurate rifle, capable of rapid follow up shots, and able to easily take medium game.

Sure, I would have a harder time with small game, but I figure that if I drop a deer, I am not all that worried about eating squirrels for a while. :)

And I like deer better.

it was a tough decision really.

the one and only made me choose my garand because i love the power.

the reason it was hard is really ar15 or garand.

i voted garand but its really a toss up with me.

capacity vs. range and power.

Depends on how long the S is HTF... if its a few days or a week, I'll take a full-scale battle rifle like an AK, M14, or AR. If it is a long and drawn out SHTF, like Mad Max, I would rather have a 22lr as I can have a lot more ammo and make it last a lot longer.

Still the Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage or .308. It'll bring down anything I'm likely to shoot at any range at which I am likely to shoot. The older I get, the less alluring I find military-style self-loaders.

M1 Garand

It's in the most utilitarian caliber ever made as far as rifles go, and with the
M1 Garand, you get eight rounds of boom-boom. General Patton called it the greatest battle implement ever created....I'd tend to take that man's advice on issues of SHTF. When a General can pick from planes, tanks, ships, artillery, etc. and he picks the M1 Garand -- well if that doesn't decide it for you all, then you are going to be leaving more for me and I'm OK with that.:neener:

M-14 or AR-15

During the first discussion on this topic some of the issues that came up were: This one rifle is going to have to last, durability, what a the chances of getting parts if needed, can it be used in defensive situations, accuracy, can it be used for game collection, power, what is the ease of getting ammo in the future, wide spread availabilty and compatabilty or reload. Ammo always came up as the main problem. Will I have to rely on wide spread availabiity so stay with 308, 5.56 or AK's 7.62 or 5.45? Do you stay with something most familiuar, but a simple breakage or lack of availiable ammo shuts me down. Lots of 22 ammo may be found, but can it fill all the roles I need. The most widely available 5.56 but you live in the high country? Look at availiable ammo supplies now, and there is no crisis. Makes ya kinda think.

M-14 or AR-15

We forgot to mention that where we live, either urban or suburban may affect your decision. I live in South Floirda, which if SHTF would become a target rich environment. Focusing on defense instead of game.

Why did I say surplus bolt. Well reason It'd be a Mosin M44 they are short accurate and almost stupid proof. --This is for basic survival not an invasion. It can kill a bear or any big beast that you might run into.

Now for Zombies AR hands down.

If you are talking a legal restriction on one rifle I think I would have to have an AR-15 lower. You can have any and all sorts of uppers from a crossbow to a .50 BMG. If that's not versatility, I don't know what is.

If we are discussing a SHTF situation, well then the specific nature of a SHTF situation would determine the proper rifle.

I chose a AR15.

Reason, because it can serve multiple purposes, I can lots of rounds easily (just in case you have to be on the go) and by swapping out a bolt carrier group and inserting mag liners I can shoot 22 LR. Also I can use my Gemtech suppressor for both 223 and 22. Very versitile rifle with lots of spare parts.

Next choice would be a plain jane shotty in 12g.
