I agree, I'd certainly take my Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308, as my only rifle, absolutely.

Ok, to clarify the point of the poll, one gun, one upper for the AR family. I am surprised about only 1 AR's selected in other calibers since there are a lot threads dedicated to better rounds for the AR.

Ammo would be your own consideration. Obviously in a defensive mode you will probably be able to get more ammo and weapons as a result of use of the rifle. In the country, game getting might be the prevalent use. The shotgun would be able to be used as a rifle with a rifled slug barrel if you prefer, so it qualifies. Maybe I should have posted "long gun" instead of "rifle", but then the options are wider, and limited to only 20 poll slots.

Good news is that at least one of each had been selected by 45 responses. So the variety is there, and not many choosing "other".

IF I HAD TO PICK ONLY ONE RIFLE????? Definitely an AR due to the ability to carry 200+ rounds of ammo in magazines without the burden of severe weight.

As for the type of AR: Probably my Noveske 10.5" CQB but I'll let you know .

I'll opt for my "War Machine" (officially the United States Rifle, Caliber .30, M1) for its brutal fighting style and size.

Depends on the situation of course but .......
FAL with 21 inch barrel and sans the useless bipod. Never let me down. Have to say though that I'd stake my all on a Garand or the M1A too. If no wife or donkey available maybe I'd have to go for the 5.56 platform for logistical reasons. Uh huh .. I'm growing old

I voted for the HK-CETME type rifle 'cause that's what I already have. But I think the M1-a/M14 style or a .308 AK style rifle would be a better choice. The CETME and AK rifles are almost unstoppable regardless of environment and conditions.

It's sort of like the scene in the movie where the good guy goes to their arsenal and picks the weapons for the next scene. They have all those weapons to look cool but behind the amusing image there's a hard kernel of truth: different times call for different measures.

I'm reasonably sensible so I own a range of firearms. If something ever causes me to need a firearm - be it the end of the world as we know it or a trip to the shooting range with friends - I will pick the firearms that best fit the situation I expect to be faced with.

If I was less sensible and was trying do do everything with one gun it would be the ammo, not the weapon, I would consoder first. I would be very tempted to choose something like 6.5x55, 7.65x54R, 30-06, or .45 colt because you can get very portable reloading equipment (lee loader) for those rounds and be able to cook up heavy or light loads at need.

The model of rifle? Whatever works.

22 bolt gun, I can carry 5000 rounds compared to the rest of your 200-300 rounds of the same weight. my 22 will kill anything in north america, and it is not loud, the perfect weapon for shooting, hunting, and a SHTF scenario or WROL

I've got most of what's listed.

I'd still go with a .22 bolt-action most of the time. Big guns are a bad idea in E&E situations, and a .22 will do almost anything that's needed - if you do your part.

Plus, L.E. types don't get as shook up over a little .22 as they do over something more "tactical".

NP Pun1sher, I am just surprised so few chose that. Currently less than 5% chose a slug gun.

I am also surprised at weak showing of the surplus bolt guns, it seems to be a large following here on THR of them. I guess those folks like the self loaders also, or understand their limitations when compared to more modern kit.

Not too surprised about the top four (those over 10%) but the Garand strength is showing and making a good impression.

I put in the single shot after reading the other thread about this, and maybe that was a mistake. But at least one person got to make their feeling known, lol.

But the rifle that did not hold up to my expectations was the AR-15 in other calibers. So much is written here about the need for the military to change over to this or that round, and then only 4 people choose it (currently). That puts is about the same statistically as the AK-74 at about 1-2%

Interesting to see what folks like, and feel comfortable with.

A Saiga 12 gauge novelty gun is not a rifle. Even with a rifled barrel. A shotgun with a rifled barrel is a shotgun with a rifled barrel.

No HK G36K? Fail. Seriously though, I'd take an AR, simply because of reliability, ease of carry, ammo capacity, and because I have trained more with it than any other rifle.
